It’s interesting how defense lawyers sometimes attempt to defend the indefensible. In this case, they called their client a “harmless failure” who had never come close to attacking anyone. Well, I guess that settles it. He ought to be let go to complete that Chemical Engineering degree he was working so hard on before the authorities brought it all to an abrupt end. By BETSY BLANEY, AP – “AMARILLO, Texas (AP) — A former Texas college student from Saudi Arabia was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for trying to make a bomb for use in a religious attack, possibly targeting a former U.S. president.

Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari was sentenced in Amarillo, where jurors convicted him in June of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Prosecutors say he had collected bomb-making material in his apartment and researched possible targets, including the Dallas home of former President George W. Bush. A handwritten journal found in his apartment included notes that he believed it was time for ‘jihad,’ a Muslim term for holy war.

Although the 22-year-old Aldawsari apologized Tuesday for ‘these bad actions,’ Judge Donald E. Walter said the evidence against him was overwhelming. Walter acknowledged he was conflicted due to Aldawsari’s youth and signs that outside influences had led him astray.

‘But the bottom line is that but by the grace of God there would be dead Americans,’ Walter said. ‘You would have done it. In every step, it was you all alone.’

Aldawsari stood silently in shackles as the sentence was read. The formerly clean-shaven, close-cropped man now had a full beard and long hair, and appeared to have lost a lot of weight.

There is no parole in the federal system for defendants convicted of recent crimes.

Aldawsari came to the U.S. legally in 2008 to study chemical engineering. He was arrested in Lubbock in February 2011, after federal agents searched his apartment and found explosive chemicals, wiring, a hazmat suit and clocks, along with videos showing how to make the chemical explosive TNP.

Investigators say Aldawsari’s goal was to carry out jihad. His attorneys claimed he was a harmless failure who never came close to attacking anyone.

FBI bomb experts say the amounts of chemicals he had would have yielded almost 15 pounds of explosive — about the same amount used per bomb in the 2005 London subway attacks. He also tried to order phenol, a chemical that can be used to make explosives.

Court records show that his emails and journal contained the explosive’s recipe.

Prosecutors said other targets he researched included nuclear power plants and the homes of three former soldiers who were stationed at Abu Ghraib prison.” Read more.

Draft Of Egypt’s New Constitution Revealed: Sharia Law In, Women’s Equality Out

The draft promises no discrimination based upon “sex, origin, language, religion, belief, opinion, social status or disability”. But as the world smiles down in adoration, don’t be fooled by it. Religious freedom and gender equality are diametrically incompatible with the teachings of Islam. Even Turkey — which is often hailed as “a useful model for new Arab regimes” — contains similar articles within its own constitution, yet was recently added to the list of worst religious freedom offenders in the world by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom …

By Elad Benari, INN – “Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood-led government is suggesting that the country’s new constitution be based on the principles of Islam.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s website published on Monday the draft of the new constitution, which was put together by a special committee numbering 100 members, the majority of which are members of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafist parties.

According to the draft, translated by Arab affairs expert Dalit Halevi, the main clauses in the new constitution are:

‘[Sunni] Islam is the religion of the state, Arabic is the official language and the principles of Islamic law are the main source for legislation.’

‘The principles of the religion of the Christians and the Jews are the main source of legislation for the personal and religious affairs and for the purpose of choosing their spiritual leaders.’

‘The Al-Azhar (considered the highest authority in Sunni Islam) is an independent Islamic institution … whose purpose is to spread the message of Islam and religion. All residents are equal before the law … there shall not be discrimination because of sex, origin, language, religion, belief, opinion, social status or disability. The state ensures the freedom of religious worship of monotheistic religions in accordance with the law.’

The draft also notes that ‘freedom of opinion is guaranteed, and should not hurt the Prophet of Prophets.’

On Friday, more than 10,000 ultraconservative Muslims demonstrated in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, demanding that Egypt’s new constitution be based on the rulings of Islamic Sharia law.” Read more.

Egypt: Women’s Equality Article Removed From Constitution – “Members of the Constituent Assembly agreed last week to remove a proposed article which provided some constitutional support for gender equality — provided that such equality did not violate the provisions of Islamic Sharia law. The episode showed the ability of both liberals and ultra-conservative Salafis to stamp their mark on a constitution-writing process dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood. Secularists had objected to women’s rights being made conditional on Sharia. This, they argued, would endanger the whole concept of equality, and could be used as a backdoor to strip women of civil and political rights they have already gained…” Read more.

Tanzania: Mob Of Islamists Destroy Dozens Of Churches, ‘We Want The Heads Of All The Church Pastors’

By George Whitten, Worthy News – “Dozens of Christian worship places have been destroyed by Islamic extremists in Tanzania and church leaders are fleeing its heavily Muslim island of Zanzibar, as the persecution of Christians spreads throughout East Africa, a human rights chief said Monday, November 12.

‘As of May [about] 25 churches and convents have been destroyed. This destruction is mostly confined to [semi-autonomous] Zanzibar where the population is 99 percent Muslim and openly hostile to Christians,’ explained William Stark, regional manager for Africa of advocacy group International Christian Concern (ICC)…

The mob burned down five churches, including the Seven Day Church, the Anglican Church and the Assemblies of God Church, Christians said Other property belonging to Christians in the area was also destroyed including a car belonging to the Anglican Church pastor, according to ICC investigators.

‘As the riots continued, the Evangelical Assemblies of God Church in Tanzania was pulled down. In the following days, unrest in the Muslim community continued, leading to the destruction of more properties across the country and the lives of Christian leaders being threatened,’ Stark said in a statement obtained by Worthy News.

The violence also spread to Zanzibar, where on October 18, a mob of Muslim protestors carrying clubs, swords and machetes invaded two churches shouting ‘We want the head of Bishop Shayo’ as they tried to enter his Roman Catholic church, Christians claimed.

When they failed to break into the church, the mob moved on to the Anglican church of Reverend. Emmanuel Masoud where the crowd broke windows and were seen hacking at the doors while chanting: ‘We need the head of Masoud!’ and We want the heads of all the church pastors in Zanzibar!’

Pastor Lucian Mgaywa of the Church of God in Zanzibar, said in a statement that, ‘These chants caused a lot of panic and some pastors, fearing for their lives, fled the island of Zanzibar to the mainland of Tanzania,’ though the government later ‘intervened and provided security.'” Read more.

Nigeria: Suspected Islamists Torch Churches, Shoot Dead Five Christians In Yobe State

News 24 – “Kano – Gunmen have shot dead five Christian residents of a town in a restive north-eastern Nigerian region previously hit by deadly Islamist attacks, the police said on Sunday.

The gunmen stormed the home of five Christian ethnic Igbos from eastern Nigeria in Gaidam town late on Saturday and shot them dead before fleeing, state police commissioner Patrick Egbuniwe said.

‘The gunmen broke into the home of the Igbo iron welders after they had closed from work and shot them dead. The attackers escaped and no one has been arrested for the attack,’ he told AFP.

Gaidam, which lies 135km from the Yobe state capital Damaturu and near the border with Niger, is the hometown of state governor Ibrahim Gaidam.

It is not clear if the assailants killed them because they were Christians.

Boko Haram

Egbuniwe did not say whether Boko Haram was behind the killing.

In November last year, the Islamist militant group launched co-ordinated bombings and shooting attacks on the town.

Armed with Kalashnikov rifles, the Islamists hurled explosives at Gaidam police station, freed suspects, stole arms, rampaged through the town, burning six churches, a high court, a shopping complex and robbing a bank.

On Friday, gunmen killed three policemen and set ablaze three churches and a school in the town of Bonny Yadi in the volatile state, a military spokesperson said.” Read more.

‘Sickening’: War Memorial Defaced In Toronto’s Coronation Park, ‘Canada Will Burn Praise Allah’

I have no idea if this act of vandalism was committed by a Muslim or not, but it certainly does demonstrate the degree to which Islam has encroached upon the sensibilities of Western society …

CTV News – “Police have asked a hate crime investigator to look into vandalism discovered on a war memorial at a park near Toronto’s waterfront.

The words ‘Canada will burn praise Allah’ were discovered on the Victory Peace war memorial in Coronation Park on Sunday, hours after a Remembrance Day service had taken place.

City workers managed to scrub away the black lettering on Monday morning, but investigators are still trying to figure out who scrawled the message on the sculpture.

If the vandalism is declared a hate crime, the formal charge will remain mischief but the penalty accompanying a conviction will be much more severe.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford condemned the vandalism while speaking to media Monday.

‘For someone to stoop to that level, to go after people that sacrificed their lives for us to be here, is absolutely sickening,’ Ford told reporters.

That sentiment was echoed by Gord Pearce, a member of a Royal Canadian Legion branch in east Toronto.

‘I think it’s just hoodlums that are doing it,’ he said. ‘I don’t think they have respect for the country or Canada or what our soldiers have done for them.’

The Victory Peace monument was created to mark the end of the Second World War. It features 50 words in 50 different languages, all of them meaning ‘peace.'” Read more.

By AL ARABIYA – “An Egyptian jihad leader, with self-professed links to the Taliban, called for the ‘destruction of the Sphinx and the Giza Pyramids in Egypt,’ drawing ties between the Egyptian relics and Buddha statues, local media reported this week.

Murgan Salem al-Gohary, an Islamist leader twice-sentenced under former President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, called on Muslims to remove such ‘idols.’

‘All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha statues,’ he said on Saturday during a television interview on an Egyptian private channel, widely watched by Egyptian and Arab audiences.

‘God ordered Prophet Mohammed to destroy idols,’ he added. ‘When I was with the Taliban we destroyed the statue of Buddha, something the government failed to do.’

His comments came a day after thousands of ultraconservative Islamists gathered in Tahrir Square to call for the strict application of Sharia law in the new constitution.

But in retaliation to Gohary’s remarks, the vice president of Tunisia’s Ennahda party, Sheikh Abdel Fattah Moro, called the live program and told Gohary that famous historic military commander Amr ibn al-Aas did not destroy statues when he conquered Egypt.

‘So who are you to do it?’ he wondered. ‘The Prophet destroyed the idols because people worshiped them, but the Sphinx and the Pyramids are not worshiped.’…

In recent months, fears have surfaced that the ultra-conservative Salafi political powers may soon wish to debate new guidelines over Egyptian antiquities.

Islamists have swept the recent presidential and parliamentary elections in the country’s post-revolutionary stage, with the Muslim Brotherhood and the ultra-conservative Salafi Islamists rising to political power.

‘The fundamental Salafis have demanded to cover Pharaonic statues, because they regard them to be idols,’ Egyptian author on ancient history Ahmed Osman told Al Arabiya English…” Read more.

Strong 6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Guatemala’s Coast, People Flee Buildings And Homes In Panic

CTV News, AP – “GUATEMALA CITY — A 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook Guatemala’s Pacific coastline on Sunday, four days after a major quake killed dozens in the Central American country.

People fled buildings and homes in panic in various cities along Guatemala’s Pacific coast near its border with Mexico on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of deaths or major damage.

Eddy Sanchez, director of Guatemala’s National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology and Hydrology, urged residents to avoid returning to buildings and homes with structural damage from the last quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 30 kilometres west-southwest of Champerico, Guatemala, and 185 kilometres southwest of Guatemala City. It had a depth of 27 kilometres and was centred off the country’s coast.

Seismologists say it was the strongest aftershock yet from a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that killed 52 people in western Guatemala on Wednesday.

That quake, the country’s strongest in 36 years, left thousands of people without homes, electricity or water; and emotionally devastated one small town by wiping out almost an entire family.

It was felt as far as Mexico City. It affected as many as 1.2 million Guatemalans and was followed by 70 aftershocks in the first 24 hours.” Read more.

By Gil Ronen, INN – “A direct strike on a home in Sderot was reported after 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening, as Gaza terrorists continued to fire a barrage of missiles at Israeli civilian men, women and children.

Initial reports said no one was injured despite the direct hit.

Many of the rockets fired Sunday were timed for the end of the school day, in order to try and kill or maim children. More than 100 rockets were fired during the day.

A Be’er Sheva resident named Barbara told Arutz Sheva: ‘They timed the attack at just the time all the kids got out of school…mine too!! First time I was ever close to hysterical was today.’

‘This has to stop,’ said Gershon, another resident of ‘the capital of the Negev.’

‘The rocket attack was at 13:58,’ he said, ‘when all the kids were walking home from school and I was on my way to pick up my daughter. The whole city should keep their children home until the rocket attacks stop.'” Source – INN.

Saudi Grand Mufti Issues Fatwa Against Foreign Media, Contact Would Be ‘Treason’ And Assisting ‘The Enemies Of Islam’

Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh decreed that contacting foreign media outlets was ‘not permissible and is considered betrayal and assistance to the enemies of Islam’ and amounted to ‘treason and major crime’ Al Arabiya reported.

The Grand Mufti went on to say that foreign media seeks to ‘spread chaos and strife in Muslim lands’ and contact with them is a threat to Saudi security and religion.

As the highest religious authority in the Kingdom, the Grand Mufti’s words carry great weight in a country already deemed one of the most censored in the world. Following the wake of pro-democracy protests across North Africa and the Middle East, censorship in Saudi Arabia was tightened. According to CPJ ‘No foreign or local journalists are granted access to the Eastern Province, where protesters have been calling for political reforms and greater rights for the Shiite minority since February 2011.’ Additionally ‘international news outlets operating inside its borders limit their reporting in order to maintain accreditation.'” Read more.
