CBS – “NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) – Twenty children are among 28 people who were killed Friday morning after a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
State Police Lt. Paul Vance said 18 children and 6 adults were pronounced dead at that scene. Two other children later died at the hospital. One other person was injured, Vance said.
A 28th victim was found dead at a secondary crime scene, Lance said. He would not elaborate on the details.
Among those dead is the gunman. A source familiar with the investigation identified him as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, CBS News reported. He was found dead inside the building from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, sources told CBS 2.
Law enforcement sources had earlier told CBS News that the gunman was 24-year-old Ryan Lanza, Adam Lanza’s older brother. Ryan Lanza, of Hoboken, New Jersey, is now being questioned by police.
The shooting has become the second-deadliest school shooting in the nation’s history, exceeded only by the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech that left 33 people dead.” Read more.

There have been very few times that I’ve been this upset since 9/11. So many parents today now have to face a future without their child. Many of them may have already bought gifts. Had them wrapped. Some may have already been placed under the tree. But instead of bringing smiles to the faces of those precious children, they’ll bring tears to the parents who loved them. I have a little child of my own and with news like this we instinctively put ourselves in the shoes of those moms and dads, making such a gut-wrenching tragedy hit home just that much more. To all parents out there who are today blessed with little children of their own, hold them just a little tighter tonight. Talk to them just a wee bit longer. Read that one extra story before bedtime. And remind them once more just how much you love them.

We should finally learn that guns are really bad for society and start to get rid of them. As a mother of two children I can’t even imagine what I would do in a similar situation. What immediately came to my mind was an article I read a few days ago on my native Vancouver which is often presented as one of the most liveable cities with the safest neighborhoods in the world but only now I realize that you are never truly protected anywhere. And the risks your children are exposed to every day are omnipresent. I just hope the Obama administration will quickly take meaningful action concerning gun legislation to prevent such atrocities from repeating according to the promise the president made during his speech.

I can certainly understand the desire to impose strict gun legislation or wanting to get rid of them. I feel that way too sometimes, especially after watching yesterday’s tragedy unfold. But getting rid of them altogether isn’t possible today (not until Christ comes – Isaiah 2:4) and the belief that stricter gun control laws will reduce gun violence is a bit of a flawed argument that has proven ineffective in the real world. You mentioned that you live in Vancouver, Canada. But did you know that the homicide rates were LOWER in Vancouver before Canada passed restrictive gun control laws and in fact rose after the laws were passed? The Vancouver homicide rate increased 25% after the institution of the 1977 Canadian law.
Ben Stein also wrote an article recently detailing why stricter gun laws won’t cut shootings. In his article, he begins by stating a few facts about guns and shootings and deaths:
“In Sandpoint, North Idaho, where I live for most of the summer, it’s extremely easy to buy a gun. You can buy them at stores and at gun shows, or just at yard sales. Yet there are almost no gun deaths in Bonner County, Idaho.
The last ones of note in North Idaho were done by the FBI at Ruby Ridge, and that’s a different story.
On the other hand, in my beloved Los Angeles, where I live most of the year, there’s extremely strict gun control. It’s a real project to buy a gun.
Here, we have gang shootings and death by guns on a terrifying scale. In my native city of Washington, D.C., the same goes: Strict gun control and lots of shootings.
The same goes for Chicago. Strict gun control and a lot of killing…
… [T]here is nothing easy or simple about the relationship between gun control and crime. If a man had started shooting in a crowd in North Idaho, probably several men in the crowd would have shot him down immediately. Maybe a woman, too.
I’m not for vigilante law enforcement. But I am also not for government disarming everyone but criminals…
The whole problem of guns and killings is complex, and saying ‘gun control,’ or being angry at the NRA simply does not get us very far.”
What does all of this tell us? Well, it begins telling us that the real problem in America is not guns. The root of the problem is the decrepit moral condition that America is finding itself in which, in turn, precipitates criminal proclivities. Instituting strict gun laws that will make it more difficult or impossible for good law-abiding citizens to obtain arms will result in a higher percentage of criminals with weapons, and not the other way around. That would not be a good thing. Like the photo above tells us, when God is kicked out, what fills the void?

If there were two people with guns in the Colorado theater, there would be far fewer dead people.
If there were two people with guns in the Conn school, there (likely) would be far fewer dead children.
It may be jarring to the liberal mind, but its true: If one or two teachers were armed at each school, there would be less of these rampages, and they would be less deadly when they occurred.
The government, in a perverse way, is making these types of situations worse by making us dependent only on them for our safety and by the increase in “gun control” regulations.
