By Diaa Hadid, Associated Press – “Over the past decade, Iraqi Christians have fled repeatedly to this ancient mountainside village, seeking refuge from violence, then returning home when the danger eased. Now they are doing it again as Islamic militants rampage across northern Iraq, but this time few say they ever want to go back to their homes.

The flight is a new blow to Iraq’s dwindling Christian community, which is almost as old as the religion itself but which has already been devastated since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. During the past 11 years, at least half of the country’s Christian population has fled the country, according to some estimates, to escape frequent attacks by Sunni Muslim militants targeting them and their churches.

Now many of those who held out and remained may be giving up completely after fighters belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant swept over the city of Mosul and a broad swath of the country the past week.

‘I’m not going back,’ said Lina, who fled Mosul with her family as the militants swept in and came to Alqosh, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) to the north.

‘Each day we went to bed in fear,’ the 57-year-old woman said, sitting in a house for displaced people. ‘In our own houses we knew no rest.’ Like other Christians who fled here, she spoke on condition she be identified only by her first name for fear for her safety.

In leaving, the Christians are emptying out communities that date back to the first centuries of the religion, including Chaldean, Assyrian and Armenian churches. The past week, some 160 Christian families — mosly from Mosul — have fled to Alqosh, mayor Sabri Boutani told The Associated Press, consulting first on the number with his wife by speaking in Chaldean, the ancient language spoken by many residents.

Alqosh, dating back at least to the 1st century BC, is a jumble of pastel-painted homes nestled at the base of a high craggy hill among rolling plains of wheat fields. The village’s population of 6,000 is about half Christian and half ethnic Kurds. Located just outside the autonomous Kurdish zone of northern Iraq, Kurdish fighters known as peshmerga have moved into the town to protect it.

Many Christians are deciding that the comparatively liberal and prosperous Kurdish regions are their safest bet.

‘Every Christian prefers to stay in Kurdistan,’ said Abu Zeid, an engineer. He too said he wouldn’t be going back to Mosul.

‘It’s a shame because Mosul is the most important city in Iraq for Christians,’ he added. Mosul is said to be the site of the burial of Jonah …” Read more.

The Al Qaeda Spring Is Here

We all saw the bitter fruit that the “Arab Spring” produced. Now a new crop will reveal just how poisonous it truly is …

By Daniel Greenfield, FrontPage Mag – “Many of us declared the Arab Spring dead and buried. But the Arab Spring really came in two phases.

The first phase was the political destabilization of formerly stable Arab countries by liberals and Islamists. The second phase was an armed conflict by Islamists to take over entire countries.

These phases overlapped in some cases and the second phase has been underway for a while already. In Libya and Syria the first phase of the Arab Spring became the second phase. When protests didn’t work, the Islamists turned to force. When elections didn’t work for them in Libya, they turned to force for a second time. The Benghazi attack was arguably a collateral effect of Islamist attempts to take over Libya after a poor election performance that same summer.

Advocates of the Arab Spring promised that political Islam would lead to an end to Islamic terrorism, but armed Jihad and political Jihad are two phases of the same Islamic struggle. Now the shift to the second phase is complete. The real beneficiaries of the Arab Spring were always going to be those who had the most guns and cared the least about dying in battle. And that was always going to be Al Qaeda.

Libya and Syria’s civil wars had a ripple effect as weapons were seized and recruits assembled. The lessons of the Afghan wars should have made it clear that the Jihadists involved in those conflicts would not simply go home and live normal lives once the fighting was concluded.

Instead they would find other wars to fight.

The War on Terror was fed by veterans of those wars. So were a dozen more minor Jihadist conflicts that don’t normally make the news. Those conflicts produced their own veterans and spread the war around.

The Arab Spring was supposed to use ‘moderate’ political Islamists to thwart ‘extremist’ terrorists, but that was never going to happen. There is no such thing as a moderate Islamist. There are only Islamic activists more focused on one phase of the conflict. Like the distinction between the political and armed branches of terrorist groups, these distinctions are tactical. They are not ideological.

While the Muslim Brotherhood was running for office in some countries, it was waging wars in others.  While liberal foreign policy experts assumed that an Islamist group’s shift from violent to political tactics was a change in worldview, there was plenty of evidence that, like the Muslim Brotherhood, they were opportunistically working both phases of the conflict.

Even if the political Islamists had succeeded in taking over, their own internal conflicts would have boiled down to the same bloody civil wars.” Read more.

‘Coptic teacher gets 6 months in jail for ‘insulting Islam,’’Ahram Online, June 15, 2014:

Demiana Emad, a 23-year-old social studies teacher, was arrested on 9 May 2013 after the head of the parents’ association of Sheikh Sultan Primary School in Luxor filed a complaint accusing her of insulting Islam.

In June 2013, Emad was sentenced to pay a LE100,000 fine. Sunday’s jail sentence was ordered by the court in response to an appeal filed by the defendant on last year’s fine.

According to a year-old report by the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), Emad didn’t insult Islam, only “presented a comparison between religions in ancient, middle and modern ages as mentioned in the curriculum”.

The report, which warned of similar cases becoming “a tool to oppress minorities“, added that during investigations the majority of Emad’s students denied that she had insulted Islam in her class.

Charges of insulting religion go back to the regime of ousted president Hosni Mubarak, widely used then as a pretext to crack down on political activists. However, occurrences of the charge significantly rose under the rule of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from power last July.

A report issued by the EIPR last September revealed that since the 25 January 2011 revolution until the end of 2012, a total of 63 citizens, both Muslims and Christians, were charged with insulting religion.

Article 98 of Egypt’s penal code says anyone convicted of offending religion in any form can face up to six years in prison.

Kashmiri has issued a clarifcation of Grand Ayatullah al-Sistani’s call to Jihad for North American based Shia Muslims. It is a call to arms. This email is circulating in Canadian Shia forums.

Grand Ayatullah al-Sistani’s statement is very carefully worded and must be understood with great clarity as it originates from the legitimate Islamic responsibility and draws a roadmap for the security of Iraq and the region. It also addresses the remnants of the previous crises that the religious authority repeatedly alerted about; thus, it does not address only the current issue based on sentiments or emotions.

The statement obligates that all existing and influential sides solidify in cooperation and unity to confront terrorism in defense of Iraq and its citizens.

The statement specifically obligates the believers in Iraq who are able to take up arms in defense to do so, exclusively through the Iraqi official security agencies. However, that does not mean believers outside of Iraq cannot participate in such an honor.

The Jihad in the statement is ‘Wajib Kefaee,’ meaning it is not an obligatory command for all believers. Therefore, women, elderly men, children, and even young men with higher education and expertise (who play a role in sustaining society) are not obligated. Any participant believer in this jihad is considered a martyr in the path of Allah Almighty.

It is required of all believers in the world to follow the instructions of the supreme religious authority exclusively through its reliable legitimate channels. They should also make every effort and stance that will enhance the defense against and defeat of terrorism. Furthermore, they should not forget to supplicate to God Almighty to gain victory over all the terrorists, and pray to hasten the appearance of our Imam (peace be upon him).” Source – BCF.

Running For Their Lives From The “Religion Of Peace”

Brown, One News Now – “… In an article entitled ‘Christ, Muhammad, and the Culture of Beheading,’ theologian Kenneth Gentry noted that ‘In Islam, the prophet Muhammad is the greatest example for the faithful to follow. He is the model of dedication to God par excellence; in fact, he is deemed the perfect example of submission to Allah. Hence, even deriding this perfect one is blasphemous, as witness the case of Salman Rushdie, who was put under a death sentence for belittling the prophet.

‘Now then, what can we learn from the example and the teachings of the ‘perfect’ founder of Islam? Do his life and teachings discourage the horrible conduct we see engaged, tolerated, and cheered by so many Muslims today?’

The answer to this question is found in early Islamic history.

‘But what,’ asks Gentry, ‘is the example, the way, the path of the prophet? He not only engaged in caravan raids early in his career as a prophet and in war later, but he himself was involved in the massacre of the Qurayza Jews wherein he ‘had trenches dug, and the men were led out in batches and beheaded.’ Ibn Ishaq’s ancient, authoritative Life of Muhammad records this event: ‘There were 600 or 700 in all, though some put the figure as high as 800 or 900.”

The Muslims in Syria and Iraq and Pakistan who are beheading their enemies, most of whom are fellow Muslims, are simply following the example of their prophet…

The tragic fact is that we simply cannot ignore the enormity of the threat of militant Islam worldwide, nor can we limit it to some dangerous pockets of the Middle East.

Al-Qaeda already touched our nation on 9/11, while the Boston Marathon Bombing is barely one year old.

As for our friends in Israel, positioned right in the midst of one of those dangerous Middle Eastern pockets, it is with good reason that, in a very real sense, the nation lives in constant high alert, with roughly 170,000 missiles pointed at its cities, with the terrorist organization of Hamas now in a unity government with the Palestinian Authority, and with militant Islam right at its doorsteps.

After all, Tehran is less than 1,000 miles from Tel Aviv (the distance from New York City to Tampa, FL); Baghdad is just 569 miles from Tel Aviv (the distance from New York City to Cincinnati, OH); and Damascus is just 133 from Tel Aviv (the distance from New York City to Albany, NY). By Michael Daly, The Daily Beast – “The Islamist extremist some are now calling the most dangerous man in the world had a few parting words to his captors as he was released from the biggest U.S. detention camp in Iraq in 2009.

‘He said, ‘I’ll see you guys in New York,’’ recalls Army Col. Kenneth King, then the commanding officer of Camp Bucca.

King didn’t take these words from Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as a threat. Al-Baghdadi knew that many of his captors were from New York, reservists with the 306 Military Police Battalion, a unit based on Long Island that includes numerous numerous members of the NYPD and the FDNY. The camp itself was named after FDNY Fire Marshal Ronald Bucca, who was killed at the World Trade Center in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

King figured that al-Baghdadi was just saying that he had known all along that it was all essentially a joke, that he had only to wait and he would be freed to go back to what he had been doing.

‘Like, ‘This is no big thing, I’ll see you on the block,’’ King says.

King had not imagined that in less that five years he would be seeing news reports that al-Baghdadi was the leader of ISIS, the ultra-extremist army that was sweeping through Iraq toward Baghdad.

‘I’m not surprised that it was someone who spent time in Bucca but I’m a little surprised it was him,’ King says. ‘He was a bad dude, but he wasn’t the worst of the worst.’

King allows that along with being surprised he was frustrated on a very personal level.

‘We spent how many missions and how many soldiers were put at risk when we caught this guy and we just released him,” King says.

During the four years that al-Baghdadi was in custody, there had been no way for the Americans to predict what a danger he would become. Al-Baghdadi hadn’t even been assigned to Compound 14, which was reserved for the most virulently extremist Sunnis.’ Read more.

Mauritania: Islamists Threaten To “Tear Out The Eyes” Of Rights Activist For Requesting Fairness In Apostasy Trial

By Tom Miles, Reuters – “The leader of a Mauritanian group has issued a threat on his Facebook page to ‘tear out the eyes’ of a rights activist for demanding a fair trial for a man charged with turning his back on Islam, a U.N. official said.

The United Nations on Friday urged the Mauritanian government to protect human rights activist Aminetou Mint El-Moctar, who is well-known in the Islamic republic for campaigning for women’s rights and against human trafficking.

The threat against El-Moctar was made in a posting by the leader of a little-known Mauritanian group called Friends of the Prophet and has been repeated on other social media. The group called the threats a ‘fatwa’, or religious edict.

Lawyers have been unwilling to defend the man charged with apostasy, making it impossible for him to get a fair trial, U.N. human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said.

‘The horrendous threats against Ms. Mint El-Moctar, simply for pointing this out, starkly underline the importance of her public call that a fair trial must be ensured and illustrate how difficult that will be,’ he told a regular U.N. briefing.

‘The threats are based on a ‘fatwa’ issued by the leader of the movement known as Friends of the Prophet and declare that ‘whoever kills her or tears out her eyes will be rewarded by God’,’ Colville said.

(CNSNews.com) – Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), issued a rare audio message back on January 21 in which he flatly stated his group’s intention to march on Baghdad and move into “direct confrontation” with the United States.

“Our last message is to the Americans. Soon we will be in direct confrontation, and the sons of Islam have prepared for such a day,” Baghdadi said. “So watch, for we are with you, watching.”

When the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing on February 5 on al Qaida’s resurgence in Iraq, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iran and Iraq Brett McGurk presented written testimony explaining the agenda of ISIS (also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL), and discussed Baghdadi’s audio message to Americans.

ISIL, McGurk said, focuses on “an aim to carve out an Islamic caliphate stretching from Baghdad to Lebanon.”

“ISIL has also made its intentions clear: move from a new base of operations in Fallujah to Baghdad–a distance of under 30 miles,” McGurk said in his written testimony. “Its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, had this to say in a rare audio statement issued on January 21: ‘As for ISIS in Iraq: Be in the frontlines against the Shia, and march toward Baghdad and the South, keep the Shia busy in their own areas. Know that the entire Sunni population and the brothers in Syria are watching you.’”

200 U.S. Contractors Surrounded By Jihadists In Iraq, Escape Routes Are Cut Off, And No Help Is Coming

By Jeromo R. Corsi, WND – “About 200 Americans under contract with the Department of Defense at Balad Air Force Base in Iraq are trapped by the al-Qaida-inspired jihadists who have seized control of two cities and are now threatening Baghdad, according to WND sources.

The sources, private contractors who have recently returned to the U.S. from Iraq, said Friday their former colleagues effectively have been abandoned by the U.S. military and are fighting for their lives against an army of jihadists surrounding the base who belong to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.

The U.S. contractors are at Balad to help the Pentagon prepare the facilities for the delivery of the F-16 aircraft the Obama administration has agreed to provide the Iraqi government.

The surrounded Americans said they currently are under ISIS fire from small arms, AK47s, and rocket propelled grenades, or RPGs.

The contractors so far have been able to hold the base, but those on the scene reported it was only a matter of time before the ISIS terrorists succeed in breaking through the perimeter…

WND has learned from sources that the jihadists have closed down escape routes, and the U.S. Air Force is in a stand-down position. U.S. forces are not assisting even with air cover so a private extradition flight could land for a rescue, the sources said.” Read more.

The decapitated heads of policeman and soldiers are lining the streets of Iraq’s second biggest city, a displaced Iraqi woman has revealed today.

Speaking from a refugee camp to which she fled after jihadists from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (also known as ISIS) invaded the northern city of Mosul on Tuesday, the woman told of the horrific treatment meted out to those who do not bow to their rapidly expanding rule.

It would appear the occupation of Mosul was made easier by the fact a reported 30,000 soldiers fled, leaving behind tanks and firearms as just 800 fighters approached.

Less than 24 hours later the oil-rich city of Tikrit was captured by the militants, who then turned their attentions to the capital as it pushes ahead with its aim to overthrow the western-backed government as part of its goal to create an Islamic emirate spanning both sides of the Iraq-Syria border.

As jihadists now march on Baghdad after capturing swathes of northern Iraq male supporters of the government turned out today to enlist.

The recruits will expect to fight back against the ISIS militants, who impose a brutal brand of Islamic law in their territory, characterised by amputations, beheadings and crucifixions. The refugee woman, speaking to the BBC, told how decapitated victims’ heads were in placed in rows – a trademark, trophy-style execution which ISIS favours.

Government forces have so far managed to stall the militants’ remarkably rapid advance near Samarra – a city 110km (68 miles) north of Baghdad – and are now bombing insurgent positions in and around Mosul. Some 500,000 residents are estimated to have fled, which still leaves a civilian population of 1.3million behind….
