Is this Mohammed-worhiping serial killer declaring the (formerly) Christian town of Gwoza now part of the Islamic State’s caliphate in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), or a different caliphate? Seems he’s referring to the former given the fact that he’s already expressed support for its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi …

By Aminu Abubakar, AFP – “Boko Haram’s leader said a northeast town seized by the insurgents earlier this month has been placed under an Islamic caliphate, in a video obtained by AFP on Sunday.

‘Thanks be to Allah who gave victory to our brethren in (the town of) Gwoza and made it part of the Islamic caliphate,’ Abubakar Shekau said in the 52-minute video.

The military however rejected the claim, saying in a statement that the ‘sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nigerian state is still intact’.

In a July video, Shekau voiced support for the leader of the Islamic State (IS) militants Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who in late June declared himself ‘the caliph’ and ‘leader of Muslims everywhere’.

As such, it was not clear if Shekau was declaring himself to be a part of Baghdadi’s call or if he was referring to a separate Nigerian caliphate.

Kenya: Islamists Behead Christian Man After Abducting Four Traders, Muslims Released

New Vision – “A group of suspected Shebab Islamist militants have beheaded a Kenyan driver after kidnapping a group of traders on Kenyan soil near the resort island of Lamu, police said Saturday.

The militants kidnapped the traders on Wednesday and took them to the dense Boni forest area in Lamu county. The militants released three of them who were Muslims and beheaded a Christian.

Local police said the body of the victim was found in the forest on Friday. According to police, the survivors said the attackers were well armed and had identified themselves as Shebab members on a mission to fight security forces inside Kenya.

Somalia’s Shebab rebels have vowed to step up attacks on Kenyan soil in retaliation for Kenya’s military presence in Somalia as part of the African Union force supporting the country’s fragile government.

Lamu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been hit by several attacks since mid-June which have left scores dead.

The attacks have fuelled divisions on the coast, a region where radical Islam, ethnic tensions and land disputes are an explosive cocktail.” Source – New Vision.

Numerous Injuries, Major Damage, Significant Fires Reported After Strong Earthquake Rocks California

The Guardian – “A hospital in the city of Napa, in California’s northern Bay Area, has treated more than 70 patients so far after a strong earthquake hit at around 3.30am on Sunday, causing widespread damage.

The Napa city government reported two serious injuries resulting from what it called a 6.1 magnitude quake. Four mobile homes were destroyed and two were still on fire in the northern part of the city, it said, and there were 50 gas main breaks, 30 water main leaks and damage to historic buildings as well as to commercial properties.

Napa fire chief Darren Drake said the quake caused six significant fires.

Vanessa DeGier, spokeswoman for Queen of the Valley hospital in Napa, told the Associated Press most of those treated had cuts, bumps and bruises. DeGier said the facility had also treated a hip fracture and heart attack, but it was unclear if it was related to the earthquake.

There were no reports of any fatalities, Barry Martin, public information officer for Napa, said. He said he did not have details on the injuries.

The earthquake struck about 10 miles northwest of American Canyon, which is about six miles southwest of Napa in California wine country, Leslie Gordon of the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. It was the largest earthquake to shake the Bay Area since the 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta quake in 1989, the USGS said.

Unreinforced masonry buildings in downtown Napa including the historic courthouse and library suffered major damage, city officials said.

‘There’s collapses, fires,’ said Napa fire captain Doug Bridewell, standing in front of large pieces of masonry from a turn-of-the-century office building where a fire had just been extinguished. ‘That’s the worst shaking I’ve ever been in.’

Bridewell, who said he had to climb over fallen furniture in his own home to check on his family before reporting to duty, said he was starting to see more reports of injuries.

‘Everything was just shaking, the hanging lamps waving back and forth,’ said Omar Lopez, 24, night clerk at a small inn in St. Helena, 15 minutes outside of Napa. ‘Guests came into the front desk after the quake and they said the swimming pool looked like a bunch of people had jumped in at the same time.'” Read more.
