Peres To Panetta: Iran Striving For Islamic Middle East Empire

06/12/2012 1 comment

By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu, INN – “The world must not let Iran take control of the Middle East, President Shimon Peres told U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta at the Pentagon Monday.

‘I respect the diplomatic process, but the clock is ticking and Iran continues to race towards manufacturing a nuclear weapon while it also continues to lie and deceive,’ the president warned. He was quoted by Israel’s Channel 2 television.

‘It is a country of ayatollahs, and Iran is the only country in the Middle East that has imperialistic desires in the name of religion. No responsible country in the world can accept a situation in which the Middle East will be sacrificed for Iranian hegemony.’

While rejecting the ability of the ‘diplomatic process’ to stop Iran, President Peres reiterated his belief in talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. He told the Secretary of defense that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s new national unity coalition ‘definitely will help improve the chances for peace.’ He again said that PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is ‘a serious partner for negotiations.’

PA officials said this week that it is open for ‘talks’ but not for negotiations because Israel must accept its conditions for the creation of the Palestinian Authority as a new Arab country that it wants established within Israel’s borders.

Panetta did not publicly respond to President Peres’ comments on Iran and limited his response to reminding him of the ‘strong relationship’ between the United States and Israel and that the U.S. Army’s objective is ‘to ensure a better future for our children.’

He also congratulated Peres on his receiving the Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, who is scheduled to present the award on Wednesday.” Source – INN.

Turkey: Islamists Bar Woman From Public Bus, ‘You Are Causing Us To Sin’

06/12/2012 1 comment

To the Islamist mind, a woman’s uncovered head is sinful. But killing a non-Muslim for Allah? Splendid. As Turkey’s government pushes Islam down the collective throats of each and every citizen, expect more public displays of disgorge in the future …

“The worst sin and distraction from virtue that I have left for man is woman” – Prophet of Islam, Mohammed, Sahih AlBukhari, 5096

Hurriyet Daily News – “A Turkish woman claimed she was prevented from boarding a public bus by a group of Islamists because her outfit would ’cause them to sin,’ according to a report by daily Evrensel.

Yağmur Yılmaz, 21, said she left home on June 3 to go to work, wearing a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt.

Yılmaz said she walked to a stop in Istanbul’s Edirnekapı district to get on a bus going to Fatih district, where she worked. A group of around 15 men and women clad in burqas, cloaks and turbans who were on the bus blocked Yılmaz’s path, saying she could not get on the vehicle. Yılmaz said she told the group it was everybody’s right to board the bus, to which the women from the group replied, ‘We would sin if you get on this bus, you are causing us to sin.’

The men in the group also harassed Yılmaz, she claimed, saying: ‘Look at her. Her head is not covered, shame!’

‘Nobody in the bus did anything about it, not even the driver,’ Yılmaz said. ‘There were other ‘uncovered’ women waiting at the stop, but they just stood by idly.’

Yılmaz told Evrensel that she had been using the same bus route for a long time and that it was the first time that she encountered such an incident. ‘I was wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt because it was a Sunday [when many workers can wear more casual clothes], but no one would have the right to do such a thing even if I were wearing a skirt or a dress.’

Yılmaz said she was startled by the incident, meaning that she was unable to take the bus’ license plate number to file a complaint. ‘I wanted the public to learn about it,’ she said. ‘It was a shameful act and should not have happened in the first place.'” Source – Hurriyet Daily News.

Saudi Arabia Set To Clash With OPEC Over Output As Iran Presses For Decreased Production (And Higher Prices)

06/12/2012 3 comments

The Sunni push comes to shove …

By Guy Chazan, FT – “Saudi Arabia is on course for a showdown with fellow Opec members at this week’s meeting of the global oil cartel, after it called for a higher output target despite the recent drop in crude prices.

‘Our analysis suggests that we will need a higher ceiling than currently exists,’ Ali Naimi, Saudi Arabia’s oil minister, said in an interview with the Gulf Oil Review.

Oil prices have fallen sharply over recent months, from a four-year high of $128 a barrel in March to about $100 amid concern about the eurozone debt crisis and the slowdown in the global economy.

Fellow Opec member Iran has blamed Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates for the price drop, accusing them of producing too much oil.

Opec, which supplies 40 per cent of the world’s crude, normally responds to a sharp drop in prices by curbing production. However, Saudi Arabia’s current policy objective now is to prevent crude rising much higher than $100 a barrel…” Read more.

Saudi-Iran Rivalry Looms Over OPEC – “Iran and other states are expected to press Saudi Arabia to scale back its record output when OPEC meets next week in Vienna, or face the risk of a new oil-price collapse. Much has changed since the group last met in December and managed to put aside its differences to agree to collectively produce 30 million barrels a day. For one thing, oil prices in London have fallen below $100 a barrel as the world economic outlook has worsened. For another, world powers have raised the pressure on Iran’s nuclear program while urging Saudi Arabia to pump more oil to make up for any Iranian shortfall. The combination of these factors has sown discord in OPEC, with several members fretting over the current output level. Yet despite the rhetoric, few analysts expect OPEC to make dramatic shifts next week. OPEC is currently pumping nearly 6% above its production ceiling, according to most estimates. Nearly all of the excess comes from Saudi Arabia…” Read more.

Flashback: Report: Well-Connected Saudi Businessman Says Saudi Arabia Is Planning To Bankrupt Iraq And Iran – “Barton Biggs, the storied hedge fund manager who runs Traxis Partners, recently had an interesting encounter recently over lunch with a Saudi businessman who explained to him the real motivations behind Saudi Arabia’s ramp up in oil production and why oil prices will likely continue to fall as a result for an extended period of time. It’s all part of a plan hatched by the Saudi royal family… ‘Our two most dangerous enemies are Iraq and Iran. Both are Shia, and both are trying to destabilize the Arab world and our Sunni kingdom by funding terrorism. Our only weapons against them are our wealth and our oil. Their current vulnerability is their financial fragility. Their financial reserves are a fraction of ours, and they desperately need money to prop up their economies… we will gradually increase our production with the objective of breaking the price of crude down to sixty dollars a barrel.” Read more.

Turkey: The Right To Free Speech Is Being Lost, ‘There Is A New Climate Of Fear In Istanbul’

06/11/2012 7 comments

By Mehdi Hasan, “Which country in the world currently imprisons more journalists than any other? The People’s Republic of China? Nope. Iran? Wrong again. The rather depressing answer is the Republic of Turkey, where nearly 100 journalists are behind bars, according to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Yes, that’s right: modern, secular, western-oriented Turkey, with its democratically elected government, has locked away more members of the press than China and Iran combined.

But this isn’t just about the press – students, academics, artists and opposition MPs have all recently been targeted for daring to speak out against the government of prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his mildly Islamist Justice and Development Party, or AKP.

There is a new climate of fear in Istanbul. When I visited the city last week to host a discussion show for al-Jazeera English, I found journalists speaking in hushed tones about the clampdown on free speech. Within 24 hours of our arrival, one of my al-Jazeera colleagues was detained by police officers, who went through his bag and rifled through one of my scripts. They loudly objected to a line referring to the country’s ‘increasingly authoritarian government’. Who says that Turks don’t do irony?

The stock response from members of the AKP government is to blame the imprisonment and intimidation on Turkey’s supposedly ‘independent’ judiciary. But this will not do. For a start, ministers haven’t been afraid of interfering in high-profile prosecutions. In a speech at – of all places – the Council of Europe in April 2011, a defiant Erdogan, commenting on the controversial detention of the investigative journalist Ahmet Sik, compared Sik’s then unpublished book to a bomb: ‘It is a crime to use a bomb, but it is also a crime to use materials from which a bomb is made.’

Then there is the behind-the-scenes pressure that is exerted by the government on media organisations. ‘People are afraid of criticising Erdogan openly,’ says Mehmet Karli, a lecturer at Galatasaray University in Istanbul and a campaigner for Kurdish rights. ‘They might not be arrested, but they will lose their jobs.'” Read more.

Flashback: Obama’s Favorite Foreign Leader – “… the government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is not quite the equivalent of Hamas or Hezbollah, but as Michael Rubin noted last week, it has became a major sponsor and enabler of terrorism… its leader has become one of the few foreign leaders with whom Barack Obama has a strong relationship. Obama has, according to the Post, spent more time speaking on the phone with Erdogan than any other ally. Indeed, in a cover story interview with Time Magazine, Obama told a fawning Fareed Zakaria that Erdoğan was someone with whom he had become friends and forged ‘bonds of trust.’ It speaks volumes about the deplorable state of American foreign policy that Erdogan is someone with whom Obama is most comfortable.” Read more.

Flashback: Turkey: Erdogan’s Reforms Mean Less Schooling, More Qur’an – “The goals of an education reform bill introduced by the Islamic party of Turkey’s Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan have been characterised by opposition parties as aiming to halve the length of compulsory schooling to promote more Koranic schools and veil wearing… Following its third electoral victory in succession, with nearly 50% of votes cast, Erdogan’s single-party pro-Islamic government has already abolished the minimum age requirement for attendance at such schools and this reform would encourage children to give up attending their secular secondary schools in favour of religious institutions…” Read more.

United States Ousts Israel From Counterterrorism Forum Due To Fierce Objections From Turkey

06/11/2012 2 comments

Yet again, Barack Obama embraces the nation that many believe can trigger a world war

By Rachel Hirshfeld, INN – “The United States blocked Israel’s participation in the Global Counterterrorism Forum’s (GCTF) first meeting in Istanbul on Friday, despite Israel’s having one of the most extensive counterterrorism experiences in the world.

Israel was excluded from the meeting due to fierce objections by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a Washington-based source told Globes news.

According the State Department’s website, the GCTF, which was established in September 2011, aims at ‘strengthening the global counterterrorism (CT) architecture in a manner that complements and reinforces the CT work of existing multilateral bodies.’

Twenty-nine countries are participating in the GCTF, ten of which are Arab and/or Muslim countries.

‘The GCTF sought from the outset to bridge old and deep divides in the international community between Western donor nations and Muslim majority nations. And it has, I think, done that quite effectively,’ a top US official said at the press briefing prior to the opening session.

Republican politicians claim that since one third of the GCTF’s members are Muslim countries, the Obama administration is trying to deepen ties with the Muslim world at Israel’s expense, Globes noted.” Read more.

Flashback: Turkey: Israel No Longer A ‘Friend’, ‘It’s Time For Israel To Pay The Price’, Israeli Ambassador and Diplomats Expelled – “In a dramatic turn of events, Turkey announced that it was expelling Israeli Ambassador Gabby Levy from Ankara. Davutoglu said Turkey’s diplomatic representation in Israel would be further reduced to second-secretary level. In accordance, all lower Israeli diplomatic personnel above the second-secretary level have also been expelled. The announcement followed a press conference, in which Davutoglu said that some of the UN’s Palmer Report findings on the raid were ‘unacceptable,’ adding that it was ‘time for Israel to pay the price… The highest price it can pay is losing our friendship.’” Read more.

Flashback: Turkey Installing New Military Tech That Will Allow Warplanes and Ships to Target Israel as the Enemy – “In yet another sign of the deterioration in Israel-Turkish ties, Turkey’s Star Gazete reported Tuesday that the military is installing new technology that will allow warplanes and ships to target Israeli vessels. Previously, Turkish planes, ships and submarines used American technology, which automatically classified Israeli equipment as ‘friendly.’ The new system, developed in Turkey, will allow the Turkish military to decide which targets to label as friendly. The switch was pioneered by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s regime. The system was declared ready just days after Erdogan suspended defense trade with Israel and termed Israel a ‘spoiled child.’” Read more.

Flashback: Turkey to Double Size of Its Army – “With Prime Minister Erdogan’s Islamist AK party having seized its third landslide election victory in Turkey, many throughout the international community have been watching to see what will be next on the Turkish agenda. Now there are strong indicators in the Turkish media that Turkey is planning on literally doubling the size of its army – this coming from the nation that already has the largest army in Middle East and the second-largest army in NATO, second only to the United States.” Read more.

Turkey: New Law Requires Islamic Prayer Rooms In All Shopping Malls, Movie Theaters, And Other Public Spaces

06/10/2012 23 comments

That useful model for new Arab regimes is at it again. At this rate, they’ll begin demanding Islamic prayer rooms for the few Churches remaining in Turkey …

By Robert Spencer – “And the self-described ‘liberal Muslim’ Mustafa Akyol is just fine with these new developments, which once again manifest Turkey’s discarding of secularism and gallop toward Sharia. Akyol praises ‘the rightful focus of Erdoğan and other conservatives on matters of religious freedom.’ (Apparently Akyol, like the mainstream media, would term pro-Sharia forces to be ‘conservative,’ while simultaneously labeling those who oppose Sharia as also ‘conservative.’)

Akyol has revealed his true colors before, notably when he declared his support for the jihad flotilla that Turkey sent against Israel. The Turkish columnist Burak Bekdil has characterized the ‘liberal’ Akyol as a pro-Sharia, pro-Erdogan Islamic supremacist. But undoubtedly a sly one. Bekdil says that Akyol is working to further ‘Islamists’ global ambition to play the modern day, Muslim Trojan Horse at the gates of western civilization.’

Consistent with that, Akyol here says that an Islamic Turkey is coming and that Turkish secularism cannot be salvaged, but that Israelis shouldn’t be concerned: as long as they stop defending themselves against the Gaza jihadists and jihad flotillas, all will be well.

It would be refreshing if the many, many Americans who were taken in a few years back by Akyol’s ‘moderate’ act would reconsider now. But I am not holding my breath.” Source – Jihad Watch.

Flashback: Turkey: From Churches to Mosques, See What Happens When a Secular State is Taken Over by Islamists – “A story in today’s International Herald Tribune (read here on the New York Times website) provides an interesting insight into exactly what happens when a secular state is taken over by Islamists. The piece concerned the Hagia Sophia of Iznik, an ancient church that brought 40,000 tourists to the town south of Istanbul much to the delight of the locals. Iznik was once known as Nicaea, and it was there the first Ecumenical Council of the Christian Church met at the Hagia Sophia in the year 325. But the Islamist government of Turkey has put a damper on the prosperity of those who profited from the museum by formally converting the building into a mosque.” Read more.

Flashback: Turkey, Key US Ally, Added to List of Worst Religious Freedom Offenders – “Yes, you’ve read that right. The country that has become ‘a useful model for new Arab regimes’ has now been added to the list of worst religious freedom offenders in the world. Alongside Egypt who now vows to one day kill all Jews, this is a nation that the Obama Administration is now actively arming, a nation that now makes verbal attacks against Israel ‘a central feature’ of its political discourse. Welcome to the ‘new’ face of ‘moderate Islam’ …” Read more.

Turkey: Former Hagia Sophia Church To Soon Become A Mega Mosque?

06/10/2012 Leave a comment

By Raymond Ibrahim, FrontpageMag – “Though ostensibly dealing with a building, a recent report demonstrates how Turkey’s populace—once deemed the most secular and liberal in the Muslim world—is reverting to its Islamic heritage, complete with animosity for the infidel West and dreams of Islam’s glory days of jihad and conquest. According to Reuters:

Thousands of devout Muslims prayed outside Turkey’s historic Hagia Sophia museum on Saturday [May 23] to protest a 1934 law that bars religious services at the former church and mosque. Worshippers shouted, “Break the chains, let Hagia Sophia Mosque open,” and “God is great” [the notorious “Allahu Akbar”] before kneeling in prayer as tourists looked on. Turkey’s secular laws prevent Muslims and Christians from formal worship within the 6th-century monument, the world’s greatest cathedral for almost a millennium before invading Ottomans converted it into a mosque in the 15th century.

In fact, Hagia Sophia—Greek for ‘Holy Wisdom”—was Christendom’s greatest cathedral. Built in Constantinople, the heart of the Christian empire, it was also a stalwart symbol of defiance against an ever encroaching Islam from the east. After parrying centuries of jihadi thrusts, Constantinople was finally sacked by Ottoman Turks in 1453. Its crosses desecrated and icons defaced, Hagia Sophia—as well as thousands of other churches—was immediately converted into a mosque, the tall minarets of Islam surrounding it in triumph. Then, after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, as part of several reforms, Ataturk transformed Hagia Sophia into a ‘neutral’ museum in 1934—a gesture of goodwill to the then triumphant West from a then crestfallen Turkey.

Even though Hagia Sophia is a Christian center under Islamic domination, several Christian authorities are content seeing it remain a museum, including the Ecumenical Patriarchate, spiritual leader of Orthodox Christians: ‘We want it to remain a museum in line with the Republic of Turkey’s principles. If it were to become a mosque, Christians wouldn’t be able to pray there, and if it became a church it would be chaos.’

True enough; one need only recall how back in 2006, when Pope Benedict was scheduled to visit Hagia Sophia, Muslims were outraged. Then, Turkey’s independent paper Vatan wrote: ‘The risk is that Benedict will send Turkey’s Muslims and much of the Islamic world into paroxysms of fury if there is any perception that the Pope is trying to re-appropriate a Christian center that fell to Muslims.’ Before the Pope’s visit, a gang of Turks stormed and occupied Hagia Sophia, screaming ‘Allahu Akbar!’ and warning ‘Pope! Don’t make a mistake; don’t wear out our patience.’ On the day of the Pope’s visit, another throng of Islamists waved banners saying ‘Pope get out of Turkey’ while chanting Hagia Sophia ‘is Turkish and will remain Turkish.'” Read more.

UK: Mosque Near Olympics Site In London Investigated For Links To Terrorism

06/10/2012 4 comments

A “religion of peace” mosque teaching religion, but not peace? What a shocker. We’re over a month away now from the summer olympics, and given the history of this mosque I’m surprised that it is still permitted to remain a place of “worship.” But then again, we’re talking about a country so entrenched in multiculturalism and neutered by political correctness that radical Muslim clerics and blood-drunk Islamists calling for the genocide of Jews are free to roam the streets of London. If any terror attacks are perpetrated in Britain during the 2012 Olympics, it won’t be just the Islamists who are to blame …

By Tom Harper – “A London mosque is under investigation over alleged links to terrorism.

The Charity Commission has launched a probe into Masjid-al-Tawhid — next to the Olympics site — amid concerns that it may be promoting extremist Islamist ideologies.

The investigation is understood to centre on sermons delivered at the mosque between 2004 and 2010 by Haitham al-Haddad, a preacher by whom notorious ‘underpants bomber’ Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab claims he was influenced.

The Leyton mosque, which propagates the extremist Salafi strand of Islam widely practised in Saudi Arabia, has also hosted several leading al Qaeda clerics in the past, including Abu Qatada and Anwar al-Awlaki.

In a letter leaked to the Standard and the BBC, the Charity Commission last week announced a ‘statutory inquiry’ into Masjid-al-Tawhid. ‘The investigation will look at whether the trustees have allowed individuals with potential links to terrorist organisations to use the charity to promote and/or express extremist views and ideologies and/or controversial points of view,’ it wrote.

Nigerian-born Abdulmutallab, 25, a London student who tried to detonate explosives hidden his underwear on a flight to Detroit on Christmas Day in 2009, was jailed for life by a US court in February. He has cited Haitham al-Haddad as an influence on his beliefs.

In 1998, radical cleric Abu Qatada, described as Osama Bin Laden’s ‘right-hand man in Europe’, held a study session at the mosque. He is now in custody in the UK fighting extradition to Jordan to face terrorism charges. Anwar al-Awlaki, an al Qaeda leader killed in Yemen last year, spoke several times at Masjid-al-Tawhid in 2003.

Former imam Dr Usama Hasan resigned from the mosque after 25 years last year after receiving death threats for teaching his congregation about evolution and women’s rights.

He said today: ‘These are very serious allegations and it is concerning that alleged links to terrorism have emerged so close to the Olympic site. The Charity Commission should pursue a full investigation to help the mosque congregation and its trustees deal with extremism and promote a moderate and inclusive Muslim community.’

Masjid-al-Tawhid did not respond to calls.” Source – London Weekly Standard.

US State Department Purges Religious Freedom Section From Its Human Rights Reports

06/08/2012 3 comments

And come this November, it’ll be time for the American people to purge the current administration from the White House …

By Pete Winn, CNSNews.com – “The U.S. State Department removed the sections covering religious freedom from the Country Reports on Human Rights that it released on May 24, three months past the statutory deadline Congress set for the release of these reports.

The new human rights reports–purged of the sections that discuss the status of religious freedom in each of the countries covered–are also the human rights reports that include the period that covered the Arab Spring and its aftermath.

Thus, the reports do not provide in-depth coverage of what has happened to Christians and other religious minorities in predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East that saw the rise of revolutionary movements in 2011 in which Islamist forces played an instrumental role.

For the first time ever, the State Department simply eliminated the section of religious freedom in its reports covering 2011 and instead referred the public to the 2010 International Religious Freedom Report – a full two years behind the times – or to the annual report of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which was released last September and covers events in 2010 but not 2011.

Leonard Leo, who recently completed a term as chairman of the USCIRF, says that removing the sections on religious freedom from the State Department’s Country Reports on Human Roghts is a bad idea.

Since 1998, when Congress created USCIRF, the State Department has been required to issue a separate yearly report specifically on International Religious Freedom.

But a section reporting on religious freedom has also always been included in the State Department’s legally required annual country-by-country reports on human rights–that is, until now.

And this is the first year the State Department would have needed to report on the effect the Arab Spring has had on religious freedom in the Middle East–had its reports, as always before, included a section on religious freedom.” Read more.

Flashback: Obama’s Christian Problem – White House Overlooks Christian Persecution While Pandering to Islam – “The Obama administration has been obsessed with Muslim outreach and recently tried to mend fences with the Jewish community. Given the state of the world, however, the White House ought to be focused on helping the world’s oppressed Christians. The United States has been wary to intervene in matters affecting Christians in the Middle East for fear of validating terrorist narratives that the West is engaged in a new crusade against Islam. The result of this passive policy has been to allow Islamic extremists increasingly to dominate the debate, often with tragic consequences.” Read more.

Flashback: Washington Times: Obama Administration Silent While Saudi Grand Mufti Targets Christianity, ‘Ignores These Types Of Provocations At Its Peril’ – “If the pope called for the destruction of all the mosques in Europe, the uproar would be cataclysmic. Pundits would lambaste the church, the White House would rush out a statement of deep concern, and rioters in the Middle East would kill each other in their grief. But when the most influential leader in the Muslim world issues a fatwa to destroy Christian churches, the silence is deafening.” Read more.

Israel: UFO Or Missile? Mystery Spiraling Lights Raise Havoc In Israel

06/08/2012 Leave a comment

RT – “A spaceship flying over Israel? A satellite or a Russian ballistic missile? An unidentified flying object observed in Middle East countries Thursday night has caused panic, with people calling the police to say they witnessed a UFO.

The mysterious shining object seen in the skies swirled around and looked like smoke, some observers said. The object gave off light and was followed by a smoke trail.

The strange flying phenomenon was also reported in Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and other countries in the region.

The Israeli Defense Forces made a statement following the incident saying they were unaware of any operations in the area.

Some astronomical experts conjectured that the object was a satellite that had exploded in orbit, the Times of Israel reports. The newspaper also quoted a Lebanese report suggesting that the flying item was the remains of a meteorite, with its smashed pieces creating a dust trail that glowed behind it.

Prominent Israeli astronomer Dr. Yigal Pat-El, who is chairman of the Israeli Astronomical Association and an observatory director, told the Ediot Ahronot newspaper it is quite possible that the object was a ballistic missile.” Read more.
