Japan Official: Fukushima Reactor No. 3 with MOX Fuel May Be Breached and Leaking Radioactive Material
Read here about the type of fuel that is being used in reactor No. 3.
By the CNN Wire Staff – “Tokyo (CNN) — Authorities in Japan raised the prospect Friday of a likely breach in the all-important containment vessel of the No. 3 reactor at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, a potentially ominous development in the race to prevent a large-scale release of radiation.
Contaminated water likely seeped through the containment vessel protecting from the reactor’s core, said Hidehiko Nishiyama of the Japan nuclear and industrial safety agency.
Three men working inside the No. 3 reactor stepped into water this week that had 10,000 times the amount of radiation typical for that locale, Nishiyama said. That water likely indicates ‘some sort of leakage’ from the reactor core, signaling a possible break of the containment vessel that houses the core.” Read more.
Radiation Is Extending Beyond Safety Zone, Report Says
“By JURO OSAWA – TOKYO—Levels of radioactivity from Japan’s damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex are above government limits for infants in some areas outside the plant’s 12-mile evacuation zone, according to the latest estimate to fuel an international debate over how close civilians should be allowed to the plant.
The new estimate, by a state-funded monitoring body, came as fears over Tokyo’s tap water eased. Tests Thursday showed radioactive material in a major plant supplying water to the capital has fallen beneath the level the government says could pose long-term health risks to infants. Elevated levels at the plant Tuesday and Wednesday sparked official warnings and bottled-water sales.
Japan’s Nuclear Safety Technology Center, a government monitoring group, released the estimate late Wednesday of the cumulative exposure to radiation in zones surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi complex. The estimate covered the 12 days since Japan’s March 11 earthquake and tsunami spurred fires, explosions and spikes in radioactivity levels at the complex.” Read more.
6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Burma
“A powerful earthquake struck northeastern Burma on Thursday night, killing one woman and shaking buildings as far away as Bangkok. No tsunami was generated.
The quake hit in an area where Burma, Thailand and Laos meet, about 70 miles from Chiang Rai. The northern Thai city sustained minor damage, according to Thai television.
A woman in an area north of Chiang Rai, just two miles from the border, died when a brick wall collapsed on her, according to police Capt. Weerapon Samranjai.
“It was like somebody was running on the roof. Everybody was in a panic. They came out of their houses and wondered what happened,” said Maj. Gen. Mongkol Sampawapon, a police chief from another district near Chiang Rai.
There were no immediate reports of damage from the Myanmar side, a remote area where communications, even in the best of times, are difficult. The country’s military-controlled government also tightly controls information.
The 6.8-magnitude quake was just six miles deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. At that strength and depth, it said 600,000 people could feel shaking anywhere from strong to violent. It added that since buildings in the area are considered vulnerable, moderate to very heavy damage could be expected.
Buildings swayed in Bangkok, about 480 miles south of the epicenter.” Read more.

Black Smoke Coming from Fukushima Reactor No. 3 with Deadly MOX Fuel, Tokyo Fears Contamination
A neutron beam was observed at least 13 times, and now word that black smoke was coming out of Fukushima reactor no. 3 today. This is the reactor filled with MOX fuel. That means plutonium. It doesn’t look like this problem is going away any time soon.
“High levels of radiation have reached Tokyo following the accident at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant. People in the capital have been told not to drink tap water. The country’s struggle to resolve its nuclear crisis has again been stalled, with workers at the Fukushima plant evacuated after black smoke emerged from one of its reactors. RT’s Igor Ogorodnev is in the Japanese capital for us.”
Radiation Levels Rise in Tokyo Tap Water as New Evacuations Ordered at Nuke Plant
“A spike in radiation levels in Tokyo tap water spurred new fears about food safety Wednesday as rising black smoke forced another evacuation of workers trying to stabilize Japan’s radiation-leaking nuclear plant.
Radiation has seeped into vegetables, raw milk, the water supply and seawater since a magnitude-9 quake and killer tsunami crippled the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant nearly two weeks ago. Broccoli was added to a list of tainted vegetables, and U.S. and Hong Kong officials announced a block on Japanese dairy and some produce from the region.
The crisis is emerging as the world’s most expensive natural disaster on record, likely to cost up to $309 billion, according to a new government estimate. The death toll continued to rise, with more than 9,400 bodies counted and more than 15,600 people listed as missing.” Read more.
Geologists: Another Earthquake Could Tear Tokyo In Two After Weakening of Fault Line Below Capital
“Geologists have warned that another powerful earthquake could inflict terrible damage on Tokyo because the Size 9 monster which struck on March 11 has altered the earth’s surface.
The quake has put pressure on the fault lines near the Japanese capital and experts have suggested that a size 7.5 magnitude earthquake could hit.
The structure of the tectonic plates and fault lines around the city makes it unlikely that Tokyo, home to 13million people, would be hit by a quake anywhere near the intensity of the one 10 days ago, said Roger Musson of the British Geological Survey.
But given the vast population – the capital and its surroundings are home to 39million people (including in the suburbs) – any strong tremor could be devastating.” Read more.
Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Strikes Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge
“Is your family prepared for an M 6.0, southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge earthquake? Preparedness experts recommend that area families be equipped to survive up to 72-hours without public services in case of emergency. The simplest way to meet this minimum requirement is with a 72-Hour Survival Kit which will meet your family’s food, water, shelter, first-aid, light, heat, sanitation and communication needs.

An important part of the USGS mission is to maintain and improve comprehensive earthquake monitoring in the United States with focus on “real-time” systems. The earthquake information above is preliminary and this event may not yet have been reviewed by a seismologist.” Source.
Three Large 6.4+ Earthquakes Strike Off Japan’s Coast
“THREE earthquakes greater than 6.4-magnitude rocked Japan last night as the Japanese Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) began testing for radiation in the sea near the badly damaged Fukushima power plant.
All three large earthquakes hit off Japan’s eastern cost between 7:18am and 9:44am GMT (6.18pm and 8.44pm AEDT) in a reminder of the devastating temblor on March 11 that has left more than 22,000 people dead or missing, the Herald Sun reported.
The first and third quakes measured 6.6-magnitude, while the second was recorded as a 6.4-magnitude shock, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The third quake was at a depth of only 15km off the eastern coast of the country, raising fears of further damage to the already devastated region.
The 9.0-magnitude March 11 quake that the World Bank estimated caused $US235 billion worth of damage hit at a depth of 32km. Overall there were 17 quakes in the 12 hours to 1:00pm GMT (midnight AEDT), according to the USGS.
As emergency repair work continued on the Fukushima nuclear power plant, on Japan’s northeastern coast, the JAEA was testing radiation levels in the sea near the crippled reactors.” Read more.
US Military Considering Mandatory Evacuations in Yokosuka as Radiation Levels Rise
“The U.S. military is considering the mandatory evacuation of thousands of American troops and their families in Japan out of concern over rising radiation levels, a senior defense official tells CNN.
The official, who did not want to be on the record talking about ongoing deliberations, says there are no discussions to evacuate all U.S. troops across the country. The talks have focused exclusively on U.S. troops in Yokosuka, just south of Tokyo, the official said. Yokosuka is home to America’s largest naval base in Japan. The military is monitoring radiation levels on a constant basis.
As of Monday, the U.S. Navy had no more warships in port at the base. The aircraft carrier USS George Washington, which had been undergoing maintenance in Yokosuka, left port Monday in order to get away from the plume of radioactive particles that could blow over the base. Because it left port with a much smaller than normal crew, the George Washington will not take part in the Japanese relief effort.
The official said the talks originated with Pacific Command, the military authority that directly oversees U.S. troops in the region, but ‘discussions have since taken place here in Washington as well.” Read more.
Workers Flee Japan Nuclear Plant as Smoke Rises
Note: This smoke is coming from reactor no. 3 which contains MOX fuel.
“FUKUSHIMA, Japan (AP) — Gray smoke rose from two reactor units Monday, temporarily stalling critical work to reconnect power lines and restore cooling systems to stabilize Japan’s radiation-leaking nuclear complex.
Workers are racing to bring the nuclear plant under control, but the process is proceeding in fits and starts, stalled by incidents like the smoke and by the need to work methodically to make sure wiring, pumps and other machinery can be safely switched on.
‘Our crisis is still going on. Our crisis is with the nuclear plants. We are doing everything we can to bring this to an end,’ Gov. Yuhei Sato of Fukushima prefecture, where the plant is located, told the more than 1,000 people moved away from the plant into a gymnasium. ‘Don’t give up. We know you are suffering.’
‘Please get us out of here,’ yelled Harunobu Suzuki, a 63-year-old truck driver.
What caused the smoke to billow first from Unit 3 at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant and later from Unit 2 is under investigation, nuclear safety agency officials said.” Read more.
Trace Levels of Radioactive Fallout From Japan Reaches California
Not to worry, it smells like fresh air. At this distance there is no risk to people in California.
“A network of international monitoring stations has begun to pick up the signatures of radioactive elements emitted by Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, a Swedish official said Thursday.
At high, sustained doses, these radioactive elements—including iodine and cesium—can be dangerous to human health.
However, the amounts released from the plant so far are small, and are largely being dispersed over the Pacific.
Currently, ‘they don’t pose a danger’ to the U.S. or even other Asian countries, said Lars-Erik De Geer, research director at the Swedish Defense Research Institute, who has seen the data from the monitoring stations.” Read more.
Japan Nuclear Plant: Exposed to the Elements – Nuclear Fuel in Meltdown
Open to the elements after its walls were blown away, this is the dried-up storage pool where overheating fuel rods are threatening a nuclear meltdown at Japan’s stricken Fukushima power plant.

“Close-up pictures of the devastated No 4 reactor building show the gaping hole through which radiation is escaping into the atmosphere as the rods break down.
Last night, the UN’s nuclear safety body said it was “too early to say” whether desperate attempts to cool them by spraying water into the building had been a success.
The Foreign Office issued an urgent statement advising any Britons within 50 miles of the plant to leave the area immediately, and arranged charter flights to get British citizens out of the country.
Radiation levels 20 miles from the plant – well outside Japan’s official 12-mile evacuation zone – came close to double the safety limit normally allowed for nuclear workers.
Despite assurances that other countries were not at risk of harmful levels of radiation, growing alarm led to panic-buying of radiation-blocking drugs in places thousands of miles from Japan.” Read more.
