“I saw more dead horseshoe crabs (not to mention numerous fish) on the beach than I’ve seen anywhere before on my many trips to Horn Island as well as my travels along the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama coast over the last 10 months. There were far too many dead crabs to count.”  Read more.

A tide of dead infant dolphins has washed ashore the past two weeks along a 100 mile stretch of the Alabama and Mississippi coastlines. A total of 24 have been found, five in the past 24 hours.  Read more.

New Oil Surfaces Near Elmer’s Island

“BATON ROUGE — New oil is still washing up on local beaches, including Elmer’s Island, 10 months after BP’s Deepwater Horizon explosion, state officials said.

It’s a contentious time for crude sightings, especially as BP and the federal government begin to inch out of the Gulf Coast.

Officials with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries say they’ve been told that the clean-up partners are planning to “pack up shop” at the end of this month.

Secretary Robert Barham called the departure “unacceptable,” especially since new oil is being discovered in places like Bay Jimmy, Red Fish Bay and Pass-a-Loutre.” Read more.

Clouds around the Gulf showed up as if they had almost a millimeter of oil in them. And these hydrocarbon-laden clouds – when they reach land – would in fact rain oil. Leifer thinks this oil rain is an unprecedented oil spill phenomenon – a combination of the Gulf’s high humidity and the columns of thick smoke from burning oil. A lot of things about the BP blowout made it unlike other oil spills. Read more.
