Japan: Scientist Warns Mount Fuji Is Due For a ‘Big Scale Explosive Eruption’ That Could Affect Millions, Cause Billions In Damage

10/14/2012 Leave a comment

By Mark Willacy, ABC News – “A Japanese scientist has warned Mount Fuji is due for a ‘big-scale explosive eruption’ that could affect millions of people and cause billions of dollars worth of damage.

Last month a study found the magma chamber under the mountain has come under immense pressure, which could even trigger a volcanic eruption.

It said the added pressure could have been caused by last year’s earthquake, which was followed a few days later by another large tremor directly underneath Fuji.

Professor Toshitsugu Fujii, the head of Japan’s volcanic eruption prediction panel, says an eruption could cause chaos and carnage all the way to Tokyo.

‘Mount Fuji has been resting for 300 years now, and this is abnormal,’ he told Saturday AM.

‘It usually erupts in some form every 30 years.

‘So the next eruption could be a big-scale explosive eruption.’

Ever since last year’s massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake off Japan’s north-east, the country’s meteorological agency has been keeping a closer eye on Mount Fuji.

Of even greater concern to the agency was a magnitude-6.2 quake right under the volcano a few days after the big one.

‘It’s known that when a large earthquake happens, it can trigger a nearby volcano to erupt,’ Professor Fujii said.

‘That’s what happened 300 years ago, when Fuji erupted just 40 days after a big quake.'” Read more.

Florida: Worst Red Tide Outbreak In Years Stretching Nearly 100 Miles Kills Thousands Of Fish, ‘There Were Too Many To Count’

10/11/2012 Leave a comment

By Kate Spinner, Herald Tribune – “The largest red tide bloom to affect Southwest Florida in years stretches nearly 100 miles from Lee County to Pinellas, with reports of fish kills and irritating red-tide air concentrated in Sarasota County.

The widespread nature and intensity of the bloom, strongest off Charlotte Harbor, exceeds a smaller outbreak at this time last year and is the largest to affect the Sarasota area since 2007.

More than seven tons of dead fish have been scooped up from Sarasota County beaches alone — from Casey Key south — in just two days. Beaches were clear at Siesta, Lido, Longboat and farther north.

‘It is a pretty big red tide bloom. If we look at the linear distance along the coast, we’re looking at nearly 100 miles,’ said Alina Corcoran, a research scientist in charge of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Service’s harmful algal bloom program. ‘It doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon.’

Such blooms can make trips to the beach extremely unpleasant, and even dangerous for pets and people with respiratory illnesses such as asthma.

The algae kills fish and infuses the air with a toxin that makes healthy people cough. People with respiratory illnesses should avoid the beach during red tides.

In Sarasota County, beaches from Casey Key south are getting the worst of the red tide. No effects were reported on the county’s northern beaches, such as Lido, where Bryan Stoothoff was out for an evening jog and John and Sarah Nunn were packing up from a long day in the sun and sand.

John Nunn, on vacation from Kentucky, said Lido was great, but two days ago on Caspersen the beach was so littered with fish that there were too many to count.” Read more.

World Food Prices Moving Closer To Crisis Levels, No Normalization Expected Anytime Soon

10/05/2012 8 comments

Reuters – “World food prices rose in September and are moving nearer to levels reached during the 2008 food crisis.

The United Nations food agency reported on Thursday that the worst drought in more than 50 years in the United States had sent corn and soybean prices to record highs over the summer, and, coupled with drought in Russia and other Black Sea exporting countries, raised fears of a renewed crisis.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) price index, which measures monthly price changes for a food basket of cereals, oilseeds, dairy, meat and sugar, rose 1.4% in September, mainly due to higher dairy and meat prices.

‘It’s highly unlikely we will see a normalisation of prices anytime soon,’ said FAO senior economist Abdolreza Abbassian.

Parmjit Singh, head of the food and drink sector at London law company Eversheds, said higher prices would place further pressure on squeezed international food supply chains.

‘Manufacturers and producers will naturally want to pass on increased costs to their clients but they will meet with stiff resistance from retailers who are reluctant to increase checkout prices for increasingly value-conscious customers,’ Singh said.

FAO’s index is below a peak reached in February 2011, when high food prices helped drive the Arab spring uprisings in the Middle East and north Africa, but current levels are very close to those seen in 2008, which sparked riots in poor countries.” Source – The Guardian.

CNN – “Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) — Floods resulting from monsoon rains have killed 422 people and left nearly 3,000 injured across Pakistan, a disaster agency spokesman said Saturday.

Some 350,000 people have been forced from their homes and another 4.7 million people affected by the flooding since August 22, Ahmed Kamal of the National Disaster Management Authority said.

More than 15,000 villages have been affected and many houses destroyed or damaged in the past five weeks, he said.

Pakistan has suffered a series of devastating inundations, affecting millions of people, in recent years.

Flooding last year killed 470 people and impacted 9.1 million others, Kamal said.

In the worst-affected area of Sindh province, in southeastern Pakistan, the waters submerged more than 4.5 million acres of farming land, damaging an estimated 80% of cash crops.” Read more.

South Africa: Farmers Shocked After Hundreds Of Cows Drop Dead From Cold, Disease

09/24/2012 Leave a comment

By Sphiwe Masilela and France Nyaka – “Farmers in the Thembisile Hani municipality are reeling from shock after the death of 588 cattle due to very cold weather and disease.

The department of agriculture in the area has warned people not to eat meat from the dead animals.

Department veterinarians have been sent to various municipalities to monitor the situation. It was the Thembisile Hani municipality which suffered the most, with a very high number of animal deaths.

The agriculture department’s chief director for research and structural training, Stemmer Ndala, said his team had discovered tuberculosis (TB) and pneumonia in some of the cows.

‘Lack of rain last summer had an impact on this as well.

‘This year we had harsh winter spells coupled with cold hailstorms at times and this affected the cows,’ said Ndala…

In the Kwaggafontein and KwaMhlanga areas, 29 cattle died and forming part of the 588 reported dead in the province.

Agriculture department spokesperson Bheki Nyathikazi said the cattle deaths were a source of concern to the provincial department.

He said farmers had realised that something was wrong with their animals.

‘The cattle reportedly displayed nervous signs like tremors, ataxia and paresis, prior to death.

‘Investigations are already underway and samples have since been collected from the dead animals to establish the exact cause of death,’ said Nyathikazi.

He said his department was not yet sure of the exact number of deaths as this information was still being collated.

‘We want to ensure proper disposal of carcasses to reduce environmental contamination and public health risk.’

A few days ago The New Age reported that 48 pregnant cows died at the government farm in Ermelo. The livestock died of hunger after the farm management allegedly failed to provide sufficient feed.” Source – TNA.

Swaziland: Cold Weather Blamed For Deaths Of Hundreds Of Cattle, May Likely Reach As High As 1,000

09/16/2012 Leave a comment

By KWANELE DHLADHLA, Times of Swaziland – “MBABANE – A total of 362 cattle have been killed in the Manzini region in just one week.

The cause of death has been identified as hypothermia that came about as a result of the incessant rainfall and subsequent low temperatures experienced from last Tuesday.

Director of Veterinary and Livestock Services Dr Xolani Dlamini, said the toll rose to 362 yesterday.

This figure only reflects cattle reported to have died by 5pm yesterday.

Dlamini said following autopsies conducted on the dead cattle, it was discovered that the main cause of death was cold temperatures.

Most cattle that died were calves and cows which were not well fed, kept in kraals with mud and lacked sufficient fat in their bodies to withstand the harsh temperatures.

‘The number of cattle that died as a result of hypothermia, which is a natural disaster that will show Swazi farmers the importance of keeping livestock in good health.

‘I am saying this because, had the cattle been well fed and stayed in kraals with less mud, the number of dead cattle would not have escalated to over a hundred.

‘What exacerbated the situation is that during winter there are less salts in grass, a factor which made the cattle unable to withstand extremely cold temperatures,’ said Dlamini.

More deaths are anticipated with numbers likely to escalate to 1 000 countrywide by Friday.” Read more.

US Drought Now Officially Among The Worst In American History May Intensify In The Months Ahead

09/15/2012 1 comment

By Doyle Rice, USA TODAY – “The drought scorching the nation has reached a level surpassed only twice before in recorded weather history.

The National Climatic Data Center reported this week that 57.2% of the contiguous USA is ‘moderately to extremely dry,’ a percentage topped only during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and during another drought in the mid-1950s.

We’ve got a long way to go to reach the Dust Bowl, though: At one point, in July 1934, a phenomenal 79.9% of the country was moderately or extremely dry.

Recent rainfall came too late to help the withered U.S. corn crop already being harvested in many parts of the country, but it kept the strongest drought in decades from worsening in several key Midwest and Plains states.

The U.S. is the world’s leading producer of corn, wheat and soybeans, and the drought raised widespread concern about higher food prices.

Unfortunately, the Climate Prediction Center’s U.S. drought outlook issued last week points to drought conditions lingering or intensifying over most of the nation in the months ahead.” Source – USA Today.

Drought of 2012 Conjures Up Dust Bowl Memories, Raises Questions for Tomorrow – “Over 63% of the contiguous United States in early September was suffering moderate to exceptional drought, nearly twice the land affected a year ago, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Using July data, the National Climatic Data Center reported that America is in the midst of its most expansive drought since December 1956. The combination of dry conditions and extreme heat — including hundreds of record-breaking temperatures this summer — has been unbearable for many. The drought’s impact has been seen in ways big and small, from leaves falling early and lawns turning brown to farmers giving up and lakes drying up, exposing hundreds of dead fish.” Read more.

From Dry Rivers to Dead Deer, Drought’s Impact Felt Everywhere – “Well before Hurricane Isaac hit Louisiana and brought localized heavy flooding, the weather story of the summer was not about an abundance of water — it was the lack thereof. And it still is. Farmers and residents in 40 states know this all too well, as this summer’s blend of low rainfall and extreme heat has created a crisis for many. Over a recent six-week stretch, the U.S. Department of Agriculture designated 1,692 counties as disaster areas due to the drought. The department notes about 80% of agricultural land in the country is affected, making this year’s drought more far-reaching than any since the 1950s. The impact has been felt by farmers and ranchers nationwide, but they’re hardly alone.” Read more.

Iran: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Accuses The West Of Destroying Iran’s Rain Clouds

09/11/2012 Leave a comment

Apparently Allah isn’t as mighty as America. It almost brings Revelation 11:6 to mind. At any rate, I have to ask the obvious: If America is holding back Iran’s rain, who is holding back America’s rain? …

Matthew 5:45, “… for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

By Robert Tait, The Telegraph – “The Iranian president made the assertions in a speech on Monday addressing the problems caused by low rainfall trends, which experts say is threatening Iran’s agriculture.

‘Today our country is moving towards drought, which is partly unintentional due to industry and partly intentional, as a result of the enemy destroying the clouds moving towards our country and this is a war that Iran is going to overcome,’ Mr Ahmadinejad said in a speech in the Caspian Sea city of Gonbad-e Kavus to mark its registration as a Unesco World Heritage site.

Although Iran is recognised as having one of the world’s driest climates, the comments were the latest in a series of allegations by officials of a Western conspiracy to turn its water shortage into a major crisis.

In July, Hassan Mousavi, head of Iran’s cultural heritage organisation and one of Mr Ahmadinejad’s vice-presidents, urged meteorological experts to investigate the possibility that the west was engineering a draught in southern Iran, traditionally one of the country’s most parched regions.

‘I feel that the world arrogance and colonisation (Iranian official code language for the US and its allies) by using their technologies, are affecting the environmental situation in Iran,’ he said.” Read more.

Could Hurricane Isaac Be A Warning To America Over Israel?

08/26/2012 2 comments

Admittedly, similar thoughts have been going through my own mind lately …

“TAMPA, Fla. – Could Hurricane Isaac’s disrupting of the Republican convention here be tied to recent policy decisions by the GOP leadership and Barack Obama?

That question is being raised by Bible prophecy expert William Koenig, whose book, ‘Eye to Eye: Facing the Consequences of Dividing Israel,’ links catastrophic hurricanes hitting the U.S. with changes in policy toward Israel.

Koenig points out that on Tuesday, the day Isaac formed as a tropical storm, the Republican platform committee voted to add a ‘two-state’ position pertaining to Israel for formal convention approval. Earlier, a pastor on the Republican platform committee offered an amendment for a one-state solution to the dispute between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs with no land concessions by the Jewish state.

But former Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo., quoted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to demonstrate that the original platform language was consistent with the Israeli position. Talent was supported in his successful bid to defeat the amendment by Rep. Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, better known as AIPAC.

‘This is the second straight Republican convention postponed due to a major hurricane,’ points out Koenig. ‘And this is the third straight Republican convention that became secondary news due to a hurricane. Bush was pressuring Israel during the times of the 2004 and 2008 conventions.’

Koenig links all three convention disruptions to platform committee decisions to support further division of the land of Israel to pave the way for the creation of a Palestinian state

Koenig also sees significance in the fact that Isaac, the name of Abraham’s son and Jacob’s father, is on a trajectory to hit New Orleans on the seventh anniversary of Katrina, putting gulf oil at risk. Oil companies in the area are Read more…

UK: Tens Of Thousands Of Dead Fish Found In River Weaver, So Many ‘I Could Have Walked Across The Water On Them’

08/21/2012 Leave a comment

By Matthew Taylor, Winsford Guardian – “VAST concentrations of dead fish have surfaced along the River Weaver in Winsford.

Eyewitnesses report thousands have perished along the water course, from the flashes down to Newbridge.

The Environment Agency (EA) has classed the incident as Category 1– its highest degree of severity.

The EA is awaiting laboratory results on water samples from the affected area to determine what caused the rapid de-oxygenation of the river…

The water at Newbridge would usually read between 50 to 100 per cent oxygenation.

An early reading by the EA returned a reading of just 2 per cent…

Guy Humphreys, fisheries manager for WDAA described the moment he discovered the dead fish.

He said: ‘I got a call about a tree that was down, overhanging the water. I went to have a look and noticed in the river there were all these dead fish.

‘There were so many dead or dying that I could have walked across the water on them. There’s tens of thousands of fish have been killed.’

Mr Humphreys promptly phoned the EA.

Meanwhile, people back up the river in Winsford began to witness the grizzly scene at the flashes.

Deputy mayoress of Winsford, Hilary Kennedy, said: ‘I was on the high Street walking the dog when a friend of mine came towards me from the direction of the flashes and stopped to talk.

‘She told me that she was shocked to see there were a lot of dead fish in the water around the marina, the Town Bridge and all along the river.

‘She said that there were policemen there and a heck of lot of other men, plus someone in a canoe.’

The river has a rich diversity of species, including bream, roach, silver fish, carp, tench, perch and pike…

‘It takes 15-20 years to get stocks back up to the way they were. It’s soul destroying. It’s not just fishing either, there’s the knock on affect on all wildlife in the area.'” Read more.

Could Hurricane Isaac Wreak Havoc For Republican Convention In Florida?

08/21/2012 2 comments

With the centuries-old struggle that the descendants of Ishmael have been waging against the descendants of Isaac, I thought it interesting that of all the named storms of the 2012 hurricane season that had the potential to disrupt the plans of those politicking for America’s future, it had to be “Isaac” — notwithstanding the fact that Israel is, as we speak, considering a storm of its own for its own future survival before the US elections in November …

By Jason Samenow, Washington Post – “For three straight simulations, NOAA’s Global Forecast System (GFS) model has tracked a tropical system right over the Florida peninsula through or close to Tampa just as the Republican National Convention is ramping up. Assuming this system – presently a little swirl in the open Atlantic – strengthens some, it will be named Isaac.

Before anyone gets alarmed or excited, consider forecasts of the path and intensity of tropical systems this far out have essentially no skill. As our tropical weather specialist Brian McNoldy said earlier: ‘In the 5-7 day period and beyond, weather details become fairly unpredictable.’

If this model defeats the long odds against it and is somehow right, organizers say they’re ready for the possibility of a hurricane Isaac during the convention according to a report from ABC News:

The Republican National Convention, Secret Service and federal, state and local authorities have been planning for a “multitude” of hurricane scenarios for “well over a year,” said Bryan Koon, Florida’s emergency management director. RNC spokesman James Davis would not give details of those plans, saying only that they are “focused completely on having a great convention.”

Since 1852, the Tampa area been hit by 27 hurricanes including 6 during the month of August the ABC News report said.

Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project has developed a tool that shows the historic probability of a named storm affecting the region around Tampa is 20 percent in any given season. The odds of a direct hit near Tampa is around 3 percent.

Jeff Masters of wunderground, who wrote a detailed blog post on the risk of a storm hitting Tampa during the convention, says the risk of a highly disruptive the storm that would trigger evacuations during the convention itself is smaller:

‘[H]istory suggests that the odds of a mass evacuation order being given during the 4-day period that the Republican National Convention is in town are probably around 0.2%,’ he wrote.

But if powerful hurricane did strike the Tampa Bay region – either during the convention or some other time – the effects could be devastating.” Read more.
