Iran and the Strait of Hormuz – Where in Bible Prophecy?

By Jack Smith

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow channel of water (thirty-four miles wide at its narrowest point) that connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, and from there to the oceans of the world.  The Strait is bordered by Iran to its north and the United Arab Emirates to its south. It is the only means of water tanker-shipping for Persian Gulf petroleum to the oil-thirsty nations of the world. On a typical day, 15.5 million barrels of oil are shipped through the Strait.

In recent days, Iran has threatened to close the Strait, by force, since the Obama administration has implemented expanded economic sanctions that will reduce Iran’s oil exports and oil revenues.  The United States Naval Fifth Fleet responded publicly by stating it will defend the Strait against any attempts by Iran to close it. On Thursday, 1/12/2012, the LA Times reported that the U.S. had recently increased its military presence in the Persian Gulf to include additional troops and warships (in Kuwait). The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, traveled to Israel on Saturday, 1/14/2012, to meet with Israel’s military leadership.  Further, Russia recently announced its opposition to additional economic sanctions against Iran, even if Tehran presses ahead with uranium enrichment. Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitri Rogozin, stated that Iran is its neighbor; and, any military action against Iran would be considered a direct threat against Russia.  This post discusses whether Iran or the Strait of Hormuz, or both, have a significant role in end-times Bible prophecies. Jesus – Savior or Prophet? It Matters!

Buried treasure.

Suppose you knew where it was, but you knew you would never have it; and, suppose you knew that others would. Would you help them along? Would you tell them about it, or would you keep it to yourself? Would you hide it from them, or even lie about the treasure itself? After all, if you can’t have it, why should they?

The Treasure is Jesus Christ. The one who will never know Him is the Prince of Darkness; and, he has decided to keep as many people away from the Treasure as he possibly can. Islam is one of his methods of doing so.

1 John 2:1-2 states, “My little children, I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.”  The word “propitiation” is translated from the Greek word, “hilasmos,” meaning, “. . . the ‘propitiation’ affected by the sacrificial death of Christ on the cross, whose atoning work eradicated the sin of human beings and appeased the wrath of God.” (Quoting, Stephen D. Renn, Expository Dictionary of Bible Words: Word Studies for Key English Bible Words Based on the Hebrew and Greek Texts, (Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Pub., 2005), s.v. “PROPITIATION,” WORDsearch CROSS e-book.). Thus, the death of Jesus Christ, the sinless, perfect, eternal, Lamb of God, provides the platform whereby forgiveness is offered to every human being on the face of the earth.  His death ”propitiates” or satisfies the requirements of a holy and just God who cannot ignore sin, but provides the Lamb of sacrifice, Himself, and thereby satisfies the standards of righteousness He has placed upon Himself.  Forgiveness is guaranteed by God, not because God is merciful, compassionate, and loving (although He is all of these things), but because Jesus has “purchased” salvation for the entire world (Galatians 3:13, 1 Peter 1:18).  Salvation is a gift that must be “claimed”; one that must be  Read more…

Atonement: Muslim vs Christian Understanding

01/04/2012 Leave a comment

By Jack Smith

This article will compare the concept of “atonement” in Christianity with that of Islam.

The Bible teaches that sin is universal (Isaiah 53:6); that is, everyone sins, and everyone falls short of God’s standard of righteousness (Romans 3:23). Mankind’s sinfulness acts as a separator between man and God (Isaiah 59:2), a barrier that removes humanity from God, and renders relationship with holy God, impossible.  Hence, humanity is ”out-of-relationship” with God, and in need of being reconciled.  Atonement is the doctrine whereby God and mankind are made ”at-one-ment,” that is, God and mankind are reconciled, and the nature of this new reconciled relationship is eternal and without end.

Since all have sinned and fallen short of God’s standard of righteousness, humanity cannot make amends for acts of sinfulness, nor can humanity’s righteous acts “offset” unrighteous acts.  Isaiah 64:6 puts it this way: “For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like filthy garments.”  Man’s best efforts at righteousness are likened to filthy rags.  How then can humanity ever make amends for unrighteous acts if our righteous acts are likened to filthy rags?  Likewise, how then can “filthy rags” offset unrighteous acts?  Quite the opposite occurs.  Mankind is dismally separated from God and can do nothing to make things right.  It is as if humankind has an incurable illness; an illness that will eventually render him eternally separated from a holy God.

Because of man’s condition, God acts to reconcile mankind to Himself.  He does so by providing the means whereby mankind’s unrighteousness is made righteous.  God provides a savior who is held accountable for the sins of humankind. The savior cannot be another sinner because a sinner cannot make atonement for even his own sins (sinners fall short of God’s standard, Romans 3:23), much less those of another sinner. The savior must be perfect, without sin, or the savior, himself, will fall short of God’s standard.

New DVD Series Available from Joel Richardson: ‘The Return is Near’

12/31/2011 Leave a comment

If Joel Richardson’s previous work is any indication, this new DVD teaching series will be sure to reinforce what a growing number of “Euro-centric” Christians are now beginning to suspect concerning the role of Islam in the Last Days.  Highly recommended for all students of Biblical eschatology — for those already familiar with the Middle-Eastern/Islamic End-Time Paradigm, but especially for those who still embrace a European/Roman Catholic End-Time Paradigm …

Description: “Four Dynamic Sessions on Four DVDs

Understanding and Reaching Muslims for Jesus

In this powerful session, Joel identifies the key spiritual factors affecting Muslims today and how the believer is to respond. You will discover why Islam rejects God as a Father, why Islam rejects Jesus as the divine son of God and why Islam rejects the Jewish people as inheritors of God’s promises. You will also discover how to reach Muslims and win them for Jesus. Also discussed is a heretical movement quickly infecting the Church called Chrislam and what we can do to stop it’s creeping influence.

Understanding Whats Next in the Middle East and how it will affect you

As revolutions, protests and riots continue to radically reshape the face of the entire Middle East, Joel explains what will come next and how it will affect all of us. Through examining the prophecies of Daniel 8 and 11, Joel shows how the unfolding events in the Middle East today are all talking place according to God’s divine plan. This session will thoroughly equip you to understand the region and what will happen next.

Birth pangs in the news and the coming global earthquake

As massive earthquakes continue to shake the nations, few believers are aware that the Bible predicts a massive cataclysmic coming earthquake that will level every nation of the earth. When will this happen and what is the major event that will bring this about? By reviewing data from the United States Geological Survey, Joel also shows how massive earthquakes are rapidly increasing in frequency, pointing to the soon coming of Jesus the Messiah.

What you need to know about the 12th Imam and the Mark of the Beast

What do the leaders of Iran really believe about the end of the world and the destruction of the Jewish people? In this highly educational session, Joel discusses the frightening Shi’a Muslim belief in a mysterious messiah figure known as the 12th Imam. Could the 12th Imam of Islam be the Antichrist described in the Bible? Or will the Antichrist emerge instead from the Sunni Muslim world? How does Islamic end time belief correspond to Biblical belief? Also discussed in this session is the Mark of the Beast and Islam as well as the Mark of God and described by the prophet Ezekiel. A highly informative session that you will not want to miss!”

When Nations Shake: A Prophetic Perspective

12/28/2011 Leave a comment

By Roland Clarke – “Introduction: Timely reflection

TIME magazine chose as their person of the year 2011, ‘the Protester.’ Armed with twitter and facebook accounts, youthful freedom-loving Arabs protested. They played a key role in a series of uprisings that rippled across the Middle East but TIME’s optimistic interpretation of unfolding events gives little attention to another group of protesters, the Islamists. To say that this faction doesn’t have a reputation for upholding freedom would be an understatement. Nor has there been strict secrecy about how this group has capitalized on the opportunity to bring their agenda to the table. In fact, Islamists in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia have gained the upper hand on mechanisms that will determine the shape of the future. TIME seems to have the attitude, ‘Let’s hope things turn out for the better,’ but is this realistic? Perhaps we ought to glean insights from the Scripture which says God ‘will shake the nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations.’ (Haggai 2:7, NKJV)

Considering the events of 2011, it seems appropriate to speak of nations being shaken! As for the second part of the prophecy, Bible students have come to understand, ‘the Desire of All Nations,’ as a foreshadowing of the long-awaited Messianic King who will rule the world in righteousness and peace. Ironically, Islamists also expect Isa/Jesus to return to earth and establish a worldwide peaceful kingdom during the last days! The thrust of this article will be to examine this prophecy in more detail, but first let us consider a foundational question which provides helpful background.

What moves sinners to come to God?

Most Christians would highlight how sinners are drawn by God’s love. This is evident in the following Scripture quotes, ‘love is the greatest’ … ‘We love because he first loved us’ and, ‘There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ (1 Corinthians 13:13; 1 John 4:19; John 15:13; cf. 3:16) Muslims, on the other hand, are inclined to emphasize the fear of judgement as a motivation for turning to God.

Unfortunately there are many so-called Christians who diminish the significance of judgement. According to the Bible it is clear that love is not the only factor that draws people to God; sinners also turn to the Lord because of judgement. Look for example at Isaiah 26:8-9 where the prophet says, ‘our heart’s desire is to glorify your name. All night long I search for you. In the morning I earnestly seek for God. For only when you come to judge the earth will people learn what is right.’ The mention of judgement brings to mind God’s message to another prophet. The LORD warned Habakkuk that he was sending the ruthless Babylonians against the people of Israel in order to ‘punish’ and ‘correct’ them. (Habakkuk 1:12; 3:18) Similarly, we read Hosea’s warning against Israel and how judgement would result in the Israelites seeking the LORD and returning to him. (Hosea 5:15; 6:1-3; 3:4; 11:11; 14:1-9) Indeed, this pattern pervades Scripture. We see countless examples of God’s discipline (and judgement) causing wayward people to turn back to the LORD. We also see this in the personal testimony of the psalmist, ‘I used to wander off until you disciplined me; but now I closely follow your word.’ (Psalm 119:67; cf. Psalm 78:34-35)

Psalm 83 shows how this pattern worked out, not in relation to Israel, but in relation to surrounding nations; the Ishmaelites, Moabites, Hagrites, Amalekites and people of Tyre. All these nations hated the people of Israel. In fact, the psalmist explains that they formed an alliance so as to ‘destroy Israel as a nation.’ (v. 5) So the psalmist petitions the LORD to vindicate himself in judgement against these nations. He also prays, ‘Cover their faces with shame so that men will seek your name, O LORD… Let them know that … you alone are the Most High over all the earth.’ (Psalm 83:16,18, bold added for emphasis. Later, we will explore these twin bold themes in more detail.)

This Psalm was written more than 25 centuries ago but the current political landscape is not really different. Today’s descendants of these ancient enemies of Israel (as listed in Psalm 83)1 still hate the Israelites and plot to ‘destroy Israel as a nation.’ Is this just a coincidence? Interestingly, the religious beliefs of this modern-day alliance are clearly rooted in the Qur’an. Authoritative Muslim writings condemn the Jewish people and Read more…

Sectarian Violence in Iraq – Does it Fulfill Prophecy?

12/28/2011 1 comment

By Jack Smith

We are all aware of the recent “lowering of the flag” by the United States military, symbolically ending almost nine years of conflict in Iraq. Not surprisingly, almost before American troops had landed on United States’ soil, sectarian violence erupted in Baghdad, resulting in 72 deaths.  The two predominant sects of Islam, the Sunnis  (approximately 85%-90% of the world’s Muslims) and the Shi’ites (approximately 10%-15% of the world’s Muslims), populate Iraq, along with the Kurds. In Iraq, however, Shi’ites, are the majority sect (60%) and Sunnis are the minority sect (40%); but it’s not like the two sects populate Iraq living side-by-side much like Baptists and Methodists do in the Bible belt.  The Sunnis populate most of Baghdad and northern Iraq, while the Shi’ites populate the eastern and southern Iraq (Kurds, the extreme north of Iraq, both Sunni and Shi’ite) (see map).  Under Saddam Hussein’s leadership, Sunnis controlled the country and Shi’ites were severely persecuted.  With the invasion of Iraq by the United States and other coalition forces, the Shi’ites replaced the Sunnis in leadership (Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is Shi’ite), and a fragile “democracy” was attempted in Iraq shared by Shi’ites and Sunnis (and Kurds).  With the exit of the United States military, the security vacuum in Iraq has occurred and violence has returned; and, the pre-existing divide within Islam so severe that the nine years of “relative” peace might more accurately be viewed as nothing more than Muslim sects “holding their breath,” while coalition forces were on Iraqi soil.  The question this post addresses is this: Does the sectarian violence in Iraq (and Islam) find its fulfillment in the Bible’s prophecies of the last days?

Daniel 2 is one of the most important chapters in Bible prophecy. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon (Babylon was the ancient capital city of Iraq) has a dream (Daniel 2:31f). A giant statue appears in the dream composed of a head of gold, chest and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, legs of iron, and feet, partly of iron and partly of clay. The prophet Daniel saves the day and interprets the King’s dream. Each part of the statue represents a country that will have dominion over the prior kingdoms (the head of gold representing Babylon, the silver chest representing Media-Persia (defeated Babylon in 539 B.C.), the belly and thighs representing Greece (defeated Media-Persia in 331 B.C.), and the legs of iron representing Rome (defeated Greece in 146 B.C.). The last kingdom is represented by the feet, composed partly of iron and partly of clay; and, it is the identity of this kingdom that prophecy experts have divided on Read more…

Islamic Teacher: Saying ‘Merry Christmas’ is Worse Than Killing Someone

12/16/2011 7 comments

The Christian faith teaches that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh who was born to be the Savior of the world, sent to die for the sins of all mankind as the final sacrificial Lamb of God. But according to Islamic teaching (which doesn’t even correctly understand many basic Christian doctrines) Jesus Christ is not God in the flesh, and this foundational tenet upon which Christianity is built is considered the worst of sins that anyone can commit, called “shirk“. In Islam, it is an unpardonable sin that Allah will never forgive. But in Christianity, it is the key to everlasting life

John 1:1,14, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God … And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

1 John 4:3, “and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming …”

Transcript: “You [Muslims] cannot say ‘Merry Christmas’ … It’s not part of our Deen. Period. It’s the concept that God was born on the 25th of December. That’s as shirk and kuffir as you can get, and you saying ‘Merry Christmas’ [says], ‘Congratulations on your false religion [of Christianity]. Congratulations on your false understanding of life.’ You are congratulating them [Christians] on the most evil of shirk and kuffir … This is worse than fornication and drinking alcohol and killing someone because you’re approving of the biggest crime ever committed by the children of Adam: shirk …”

Joel Richardson Finishes New Book Subtitled, ‘The Scriptural Case for an Islamic Antichrist’

11/29/2011 2 comments

Judging from Joel’s previous work, this is sure to be another recommended reading.  It will be available as early as the Spring of 2012.  In the meantime, I am currently reading a book called “Islam – The Cloak of Antichrist” by Jack Smith, which I also recommend for any student of Biblical eschatology …

Joel Richardson: “I just wanted to drop a note to my readers and regular visitors to let everyone know that my new book is finally complete. While we’ll keep the title a secret for now, the subtitle is ‘The Scriptural Case for an Islamic Antichrist.’ The purpose of this book is to examine only the most pertinent texts that relate to the eschatological debate between the Roman Antichrist theory and the Islamic Antichrist theory.

The purpose of this book is not to merely debate what many some may feel is irrelevant end-time trivia. Many may ask why it even matters if the Antichrist will emerge from Europe or the Middle-East, whether he will be a Humanist or a Muslim. The fact of the matter is that the practical and applicational implications of the many subjects discussed in this forthcoming book are absolutely profound. If in fact Islam is the religion of the Antichrist, the implications of this are earth shattering. As much of the Church today, including large segments of the missions movement, increasingly embraces an approach to outreach toward Muslims that flirts with syncretism and outright heresy (I am referring to what has become known as ‘The Insider Movement’), it is imperative that followers of Jesus determine exactly where they stand concerning the origins and nature of Islam. As we strive to love Muslims, must we also love Islam? Or is it possible to passionately care for Muslims, while hating Islam? Is Islam a faith system that can create a genuine relationship with God, or is it purely a soul-destroying ideology? Can one be both a Muslim and a follower of Jesus as many evangelical missiologists claim? Are the Allah of the Qur’an and the God of the Bible one and the same? And what about Israel and the Jewish people? As a fierce anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism spreads from the Muslim world into the Christian Church, what do the prophets say about these things? Where is a disciple of Jesus seeking to love both Muslims and Jews to stand on these matters? What about the ‘Arab-Spring’? Does the Bible inform us say as to where this sudden and drastic change in the Muslim world is heading?

Ayatollah Khamenei Calls for an International Islamic Power-Bloc — The First Step in the Fulfillment of Ezekiel 38-39?

11/08/2011 2 comments

By Jack Smith

I direct you to a very interesting article that came through one of the blogs that I subscribe to. The article reports on a sermon given by Iran’s supreme spiritual leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, to 2.5 million people on pilgrimage in Mecca (see also, http://www.kashmirtimes.com/news.aspx?ndid=20635). On this past Sunday, the Ayatollah called for the formation of an “international Islamic power-bloc” of all Muslims uniting against the non-Muslim world (specifically, “the West, the United States, and Zionism, which are weaker than ever before”). According to the Ayatollah, such a power-bloc “can change the destiny of the Islamic Ummah (nation),” and herald “a bright future accompanied with dignity and progress.”

It really doesn’t matter whether we label the Ayatollah’s call a “Revived Caliphate” or an “international Islamic power-bloc,” the point is that a Shia leader is calling for the uniting of all Muslims against the Infidels. This particular Shia leader is also the Ayatollah of Iran, the supreme spiritual leader, who “trumps” all other leaders in Iran, including Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran’s president. Iran is the one country in the world where we continually read of its nuclear aspirations as well as its intentions to destroy Israel. To Sunnis, the majority sect of Islam, to unite under the banner of Islam at the call of a Shia leader is highly improbable. Shias are considered “unbelievers” by most Sunni Muslims. The Iranian Ayatollah’s call to the Arab world (and all Muslims) is uniquely timed to take advantage of the confusion, chaos, and vacuum of leadership commonly referred to as the “Arab Spring.” The Ayatollah describes this time as critical, and one in which Muslims must “make the most of this opportunity. . . .” He states that Islamic countries that are now able to hold free elections (previously led by dictators) will inevitably follow the lead of Tunisia, and elect Islamist leaders, and new constitutions based on Sharia law.

The tenuous political climate now present in the Middle East beckons Muslims to follow the call of the strongest voice. This is the underlying reason for the Ayatollah’s call for the Islamic power-bloc at this specific time in human history while 2.5 million Muslims listened while on religious pilgrimage. The West is perceived to be at its weakest point, and so the prospects of success seem greater than any time in the last four centuries. Read more…

New Book: “Islam – The Cloak of Antichrist” by Jack Smith

Excerpt from Chapter 1, “A Slip of the Mask”:

“He really doesn’t carry a pitch fork and have a long red tail and two horns. Yet, he is a master at disguise. Got any ideas of his favorite? Masquerade, that is?

Consider this fact: In every Bible passage except one, satan appears in disguise. In fact, the only time he does not appear in disguise is when he converses with Jesus in Matthew 4. satan even disguised himself as Simon Peter when he tempted Jesus to avoid the cross — and, Simon had no idea satan was speaking through him (Mark 8:33). What about the book of Job, you say? satan actually never appears before Job, only before God and the heavenly council (Job 1:6). In all other Bible passages, satan is in disguise — even in the Garden of Eden. The reason? Because that is how he appears before humanity.

His best disguise? Religion.”

Jacob’s Trouble Isn’t Just Jacob’s Problem – Abandoning the Pre-Tribulation Rapture Theory to be a Faithful Witness

10/04/2011 3 comments

By Dalton Lifsey – “There are scores of Christian authors, speakers, pastors, and bloggers who are boldly calling the Church to stand with Israel as the crisis in the Middle East continues to escalate before the future ‘time of Jacob’s trouble’ (Jer. 30:7; Dan. 12:1-7; Mt. 24:15-22). I’m extremely grateful for that. I hope this company of believers continues to grow and mature.

But to the degree that I am encouraged I am also burdened. Let me explain.

A large contingent–if not the majority–of those leaders who are anticipating a future hour of suffering for the Jewish people don’t believe the Church will be here when the final hour of tribulation unfolds. They expect that every believer will be caught up in a secret rapture to witness Israel’s age-ending affliction from the balcony of heaven.

John Hagee, Joel Rosenberg, Grant Jeffrey, J. Dwight Pentecost, Chuck Missler, Tim LaHaye, Randall Price, Kay Arthur, Thomas Ice, John MacArthur, Chuck Smith, Arnold Fruchtenbaum, Hal Lindsey, David Jeremiah; the list goes on and on. The majority of the most prominent pro-Israel leaders in the Body of Christ (most of whom are sincere, godly men and women) couple their teaching on standing with Israel with their teaching on an imminent secret rapture. Thus much of the Church is prepared to stand with Israel up until the commencement of their final baptism of suffering – when it will mean the most.

Joel Rosenberg–a best-selling author, prominent spokesman for Israel, and diligent student of the Word–is hosting and webcasting an event called ‘The Gathering Storm’ on October 22. The aim of the event is to articulate what is happening in the Middle East and what will continue to unfold before the Lord returns. He believes that we are approaching a time of great tribulation and upheaval in the Middle East and is therefore calling the Church to radically, wholeheartedly, and sacrificially engage with the Lord during these awesome days for the sake of Israel…..until the rapture. Then they are on their own. Without a prophetic witness. Without the testimony of the Church. Without the presence of Gospel ministry (supposedly apart from 144,000 born again Jews).” Read more.
