By BosNewsLife – “Nigerian Islamic militants have threatened a massive bloodbath after killing at least two Christians in recent days, forcing thousands of people to flee their villages along Nigeria’s northeast, refugees said Saturday June 22.

The reported threats came as local believers were mourning Christian Toma Vongjen, 40, who was reportedly killed by Fulani Muslims in attacks that also left church buildings in four villages in Plateau state completely destroyed.

The June 18 violence in Wase area, 216 kilometers (134 miles) southeast of Jos city, came days after other militants of the group Boko Haram, or ‘Western education is a sin’, killed a pastor and torched four churches in Borno state, residents said.

Reverend Jacob Kwiza was killed in the state’s Mandara Hills area after he refused to renounce his faith in Christ, said local villager Tada Garuta. ‘The gunmen threw some explosives at our church, they forced the retired reverend to renounce Christianity and be converted to Islam. But the pastor defied the gunmen’s threat of being killed,’ Garuta told media.

‘After he refused to renounce his faith. They slit his throat with sharp objects; and we started to flee for safety, as we don’t know the next targets of these gunmen.’

The murder came as Boko Haram fighters attacked the Hwa’a, Kunde, Gathahure and Gjigga settlements by night, fire bombing four churches while chanting ‘Allahu Akbar’ or ‘Allah is Great’, Nigerian media reported.” Read more.

Update: 16 Lebanese soldiers now killed …

By Loveday Morris, The Washington Post – “BEIRUT — Clashes raged in the southern Lebanon city of Sidon on Sunday night, claiming the lives of as many as 10 soldiers as violence triggered by the war in Syria engulfed its smaller neighbor.

The army said it was the subject of a ‘cold-blooded’ attack by armed gunmen intent on plunging Lebanon back into the strife of its own 15-year civil war. Sunni militiamen loyal to outspoken Sidon cleric Sheik Ahmad al-Assir exchanged rocket-propelled grenades and gunfire during the standoff, according to the army and the National News Agency.

The war in Syria has polarized Lebanon, straining relations between Sunnis and Shiites. The situation has been further inflamed by the decision of the powerful Lebanese Shiite militant movement Hezbollah to send fighters to back President Bashar al-Assad’s forces in Syria.

It was the second time in less than a week that clashes have erupted in Sidon, a coastal city 25 miles south of the capital, signaling Lebanon’s growing inability to insulate itself from the war in Syria.

Sunday’s fighting marked a dangerous escalation as the army, seen by many as the glue that holds the country together and an institution that stands above sectarian divisions, became the target, with Assir lambasting it for perceived links to Hezbollah.

As the night wore on and fighting intensified, army checkpoints also came under fire in the northern city of Tripoli and next to the southern Palestinian refugee camp of Ein al-Hilweh. Roads were temporarily blocked by Assir’s supporters up and down the coast and in the capital.” Read more.

By Illia Djadi, WorldWatch Monitor – “As a significant risk of interfaith conflict looms over the Central African Republic (CAR), the leaders of the two main religions in the country – Christianity and Islam – have decided to speak with one voice.

The CAR was plunged into chaos after a rebel coalition called Séléka overthrew the regime of François Bozizé in March, forcing him to flee the country.

Numerous acts of violence perpetrated by members of the rebellion have created a climate of tension between Christians, who make up nearly half of a population estimated at around 4.6 million, and Muslims, who comprise 15%.

The two religious communities have coexisted previously without many problems, with a strong Muslim presence in the north and Christians dominating the south.

But now the Christian community is claiming some of its Muslim neighbours have becomes accomplices to Séléka’s acts of violence, which are said to include mass murder, looting, theft and the destruction of property. Christians say they feel particularly targeted.

‘We have started dialogue between Muslims, Catholics and Protestants to calm the situation down, otherwise this country is likely to explode,’ the Bishop of Bangassou, Juan José Aguirre Munos, told the Catholic Fides Agency.

‘We are offering an opportunity for dialogue so that the life of the population can be brought back to normal. Since some Muslims have been accused of complying [with Séléka’s violence], we are trying to avoid further violence and revenge that would complicate an already very confusing situation.'” Read more.

By Michael Burleigh, Mail Online – “The crisis in Syria may appear to be no more or less than a civil war in a country many people would struggle to place on a map.

But it’s much more than that: it is rapidly becoming a sectarian struggle for power that is bleeding across the Middle East, with the potential to engulf the entire region in a deadly power struggle between two bitterly opposed Muslim ideologies, Sunni and Shia.

Already, the war inside Syria has resulted in 93,000 dead and 1.6 million refugees, with millions more displaced internally. And those figures are escalating rapidly amid reports of appalling atrocities on both sides.

The conflict started in 2011 with peaceful protests against the authoritarian regime of Bashar al-Assad, the seemingly mild successor to his father Hafez, who between 1970 and 2000 ruled Syria with a rod of iron.

Hafez’s response to dissent from the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood was to wipe out a town of 20,000 people.

Fearing that Syria faced the kind of protests that had toppled the rulers of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya during the ‘Arab Spring’, Bashar al-Assad’s security forces used tanks and gunfire to crush the demonstrations. But it only stoked the fires.

The opposition developed into an armed insurgency, and now Syria has been engulfed in a civil war which has degenerated into a vicious sectarian conflict.

On one side are those who follow President Assad, who belongs to the Alawites — a splinter sect from Shia Islam.

On the other are a loose affiliation of insurgents drawn from the majority Sunni population, some of whom have close links to the Sunni jihadists of Al Qaeda.

The level of savagery is appalling. This week, up to 60 Shia Muslims were reported to have been slaughtered in an attack by opposition fighters in the eastern Syrian city of Hatla.

A gloating cameraman who filmed the aftermath said: ‘This is the Shia carcass, this is their end.’” Read more.

With so much of strife and violence dominating our world, and the aftermath of the Arab Spring, its violent protests and repressive regimes adding their bit, it is not surprising that world peacefulness declined in 2013. The seventh edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) showed 5 per cent deterioration in the world’s peacefulness over a six-year period.

Afghanistan, with its two-decade history of conflict, violence and political instability, was at the bottom most rung of the GPI at 162nd place, displacing Somalia and pushing it up to the 161st position. Significantly, the least peaceful regions are Muslim countries — Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, Sudan and Pakistan.”

What do most of those countries have in common? Islam. Not just Islam in the abstract, but wars to make Islam into the absolute and uncompromising law of the land.

Pakistan, Afghanistan and Somalia are violent because of brutal conflicts involving the imposition of Islamic law. Syria and Iraq are split by bloody fighting between Sunnis and Shiites over Islamic doctrine.

Sudan is conducting a more conventional genocide with religious and racial elements that unquestionably draw support from Islam. But even if we count Sudan out, the remainder are indisputably wars defined by Islam.

Al Arabiya – “Hardline Lebanese Sunni Muslim cleric Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir warned on Friday that ‘a war is coming to Lebanon’ as Syrian rebels and their Lebanese supporters prepare to launch attacks against Hezbollah ‘everywhere.’

Sheikh Assir said in a Friday sermon that a response to Hezbollah’s intervention in Syria could happen in a ‘few days’ and will take place ‘anywhere’ including Lebanon.

In April Sheikh Assir urged his followers to join Syrian rebels fighting troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah.

‘Lately, we have seen our people [Sunnis] in the region of Qusayr be subjected to violence, murder and slaughter by the hands of the Iranian party,’ Assir told Al Arabiya in an interview. ‘We found that it is our legitimate duty to see to the [Sunnis’] victory.’

Senior Muslim Sunni voices have accused Hezbollah of starting a sectarian war by intervening in Syria against the Sunni opposition.

On Friday, Egypt’s ruling Muslim Brotherhood threw its weight behind the calls for Jihad in Syria, slamming Hezbollah for starting a sectarian war in Syria. ‘Throughout history, Sunnis have never been involved in starting a sectarian war,’ spokesman Ahmed Aref said.” Read more.

By Steve Tallantyre, The Local – “The man, a German national of Tunisian descent, also said that he had ‘terrorist friends who could plant bombs’ and added: ‘I don’t mind dying; if I have to die, I’ll die, but I’ll take plenty of others with me.’

The man was arrested in Alcúdia, Mallorca, and charged with a number of crimes, according to press agency EFE.

An official report from the Baleares Civil Guard stated that the accused was a student at a well-known hairdressing academy in Palma.

‘He became radicalized in the last year after making a trip to his country of origin’, said the report.

It pointed out that he had made ‘constant threats of death and references to being a Muslim’ and that he had said, ‘Soon the Muslims will be the kings of the world.’

In the past week the man is said to have threatened to ‘blow up the hairdressing academy and kill everyone’ and to have threatened to kill one of the centre’s administrators while holding scissors to her neck.

The man had been arrested before, on February 15th, for attempting to attack a local policeman by following his vehicle, attempting to crash into it and then threatening to kill him.” Read more.
