Nevada: Officials Baffled After 100,000 Fish Die In Sparks Marina, ‘The Fishery Doesn’t Exist Anymore’

By Scott Sonner, Associated Press – “State wildlife officials are trying to figure out why all the fish have died in a northern Nevada marina where the stocked fishery has flourished since the man-made lake was created nearly 15 years ago.

As many as 100,000 trout, bass and catfish have died over the past month in the Sparks Marina along U.S. Interstate 80 east of Reno, apparently the result of a dramatic, unexplained drop in dissolved oxygen levels, Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Chris Healy said Wednesday.

Scientists say a bitter cold snap could have caused oxygen-poor waters to rise from the old rock quarry’s bottom to the surface, but they don’t understand what sparked the massive die-off.

Fish biologists confirmed low oxygen levels caused the death of an estimated 3,000 fish in one corner of the lake in mid-December but Healy said they thought at the time the event was localized and of limited impact. Since then, they’ve been unable to detect any live fish in the 77-acre lake. Numerous dead fish have been removed from the lake’s shoreline and Healy said it’s likely the rest sank to the bottom.

‘The 100,000 dead fish figure is something that is probably a pretty conservative guess,’ said Healy, who estimates they’ve stocked close to 1 million adult fish in the lake since they started in 1998.

‘We don’t know if any small fish have survived, but for all intents and purposes, the fishery doesn’t exist anymore,’ he told The Associated Press.

The Reno Gazette-Journal first reported scientists determined the problem was much more serious than they realized after a boat survey on Monday found dissolved oxygen levels far too low to support the fish at 11 different sampling locations. Readings from an electronic fish-finder also revealed no fish swimming in the lake’s depths.

Lakes like the marina consist of different layers of water temperatures, with the warmest water on top holding the highest oxygen content, Healy said. He said one theory is that the surface water may have chilled very quickly, sank toward the bottom of the lake and stirred up material on its floor, causing a ‘violent turnover’ that could have sucked up additional oxygen.

By Murtaza Haider, Dawn – “From Aleppo in Syria to Quetta in Balochistan, Muslims are engaged in the slaughter of other Muslims. The numbers are enormous: over 93,000 killed in the Syrian civil war and over 48,000 dead in Pakistan. Millions have perished in similar intra-Muslim conflicts in the past four decades. Many wonder if the belief in Islam was sufficient to bind Muslims in peace with each other.

Since the end of the Second World War, the world has moved in two distinct directions. The West, mostly Christian, has tried to minimise the intra-European conflict and has largely been successful with some exceptions. The Muslim world, on the other hand, has fallen into one violent conflict after another, involving mostly Muslims. Several intra-Muslim conflicts continue to simmer as proxy wars. In the 80s, the Iran-Iraq war alone left millions dead. More recently, a car bomb in Iraq on Sunday killed another 39 in the sectarian warfare between the Shias and Sunnis that killed at least 1,045 in May 2013.

As the violence amongst Muslims increases, most Muslims prefer denial or look for scapegoats. Those in denial believe no such violence exists and the entire issue is made up by the western-controlled media. Others blame it on scapegoats – Indians and Americans are the most frequently blamed. The overwhelming evidence, however, suggests that the sectarian and tribal divisions amongst Muslims and justifying violence in the name of religion are the primary causes of why Islam is at war with itself.

In Pakistan, confessions and appalling claims of responsibility by the spokespersons for the Tehreek-i-Taliban and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi should leave no doubt about where the guilt resides. At the same time, the Pakistani Intelligence agencies have put together incriminating evidence running into hundreds of thousands of pages against the extremist sectarian outfits, al Qaeda affiliates, the nationalist militias in Balochistan, and others who have perpetrated indiscriminate violence against civilians and the State resulting in over 48,000 deaths since 2004.

The hate-fuelled gulfs that divide Muslims are so wide that not only unarmed civilians, but doctors and others who try to save victims of violence, are also targeted by the extremists. The attack on the Bolan Medical Complex on Saturday, which left scores dead including four nurses, was not the first of its kind. A sectarian attack in Karachi in February 2010 was followed by a bomb attack on the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Hospital where victims were rushed for treatment. More than 25 Shia Muslims perished in the two attacks.

And while the Muslim on Muslim violence is claiming victims all over Pakistan, the violence against non-Muslims, including Hindus and Christians, often brings together Muslims of different stripes, who would otherwise be fighting each other, in attacking religious minorities.” Read more.

In January, the Turkish-run Kuba Camii Mosque in Eschweiler, a city situated along the German-Belgian-Dutch border and about 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Cologne, for the first time began publicly calling Muslims to prayer.

The call to prayer was described as an ‘historical event’ and was attended by numerous dignitaries, including the Turkish consul and the Turkish attaché.

The Turkish imam of the Kuba Camii Mosque, Bahri Ciftci, declared his hopes that ‘the public prayer call will be a symbol of a tolerant, intercultural and interreligious common coexistence.’

The mayor of Eschweiler, Rudi Bertram, said, ‘Tolerance must be practiced on a daily basis. We are all responsible for ensuring that there is a co-existence.’

The mosque is one of a growing number of Islamic institutions in Germany publicly calling the Muslim faithful to prayer — five times a day, seven days a week — with cries of Allahu Akbar! (‘Allah is Greater!’).

The sonorous prayer calls (known in Arabic as adhan) can be heard from great distances when amplified through electric loudspeakers. Critics say some German towns and cities are beginning to evoke the sounds and images of the Islamic Middle East.

On January 14, the City-State of Bremen signed a so-called state treaty with city’s 40,000-strong Muslim community. The agreement guarantees the protection of Muslim community properties, the approval of the construction of mosques with minarets and domes, the allotment of land for Muslim cemeteries, the supplying of halal food at prisons and hospitals, the recognition of three Muslim holidays, Muslim representation in state institutions and several other rights and privileges.

According to Erol Pürlü, the spokesman of the Koordinationsrat der Muslime [Muslim Coordination Council], a Turkish-Muslim umbrella group, the treaty with Bremen ‘sends a clear signal that Islam belongs to Germany.’

Bremen is the second German state to sign a treaty with local Muslim communities. Hamburg, the second-largest city in Germany, concluded a ‘historic treaty‘ with the city’s 200,000-strong Muslim community in November 2012.

By Tova Dvorin and Ari Soffer, INN – “Rabbi Yitzhak Cohen, whose son Neria Cohen was murdered in the Mercaz HaRav attack in 2008, was violently attacked by Arab youths as he visited his son’s grave on the Mount of Olives yesterday.

‘Yesterday I went with my wife and children to my son’s gravesite,’ the Rabbi recounted, in an interview with Arutz Sheva. ‘At the end of the road on Mount of Olives, I saw a group of Arab youths – they immediately began throwing stones at our car.’

‘[Arab] youths have tried three separate times to hurt us along that road,’ he continued. ‘I tried to travel in a zigzag pattern [to avoid them] and they were literally chasing after us.’

After trying in vain to avoid the rampaging mob, Rabbi Cohen found himself cornered. As rocks rained down on his car he realized he had little choice by to draw his weapon.

‘I got out with a drawn pistol; it was a matter of time before I would use it. I stress that these were not children, but teenagers who were not afraid to launch rocks at commuters on a main road.’

‘The Arab teenagers escalated this to the extreme, to the point where we almost came to live fire,’ he noted.” Read more.

Egypt: Islamists Are Kidnapping (And Killing) Christian Children For Cash

Islamists are at war with Christianity, and when at war even the children of non-Muslims are fair game for these killers …

Hadith, Sahih Muslim 4457, “The Messenger of Allah … used not to kill the children, so thou shouldst not kill them unless you could know what Khadir had known about the child he killed, or you could distinguish between a child who would grow up to he a believer (and a child who would grow up to be a non-believer), so that you killed the (prospective) non-believer and left the (prospective) believer aside.”

By Raymond Ibrahim – “Yet another Coptic Christian child was recently kidnapped in Egypt.  Thirteen-year-old Cyril Rif‘at Fayiz was abducted in the Minya district by ‘unknown persons’ who later called the child’s parents demanding one million Egyptian pounds, nearly the equivalent of $150,000 USD.

This phenomenon — kidnapping and holding Coptic children captive for large ransoms — has become a regular feature of the Egyptian landscape, particularly in Minya, Upper Egypt.  A few examples follow:

  • August 2013: Copts held a funeral for Wahid Jacob, formerly a young church deacon.  He too was kidnapped by ‘unknown persons’ who demanded an exorbitant ransom from his family—1,200,000 Egyptian pounds (equivalent to $171,000 USD).  Because his family could not raise the sum, he was executed—his body dumped in a field where it was later found.  The priest who conducted his funeral service said that the youth’s body bore signs of severe torture.
  • May 2013: After 6-year-old Cyril Joseph was kidnapped and the family paid ransom, he was still killed.  In the words of the Arabic report, the boy’s ‘family is in tatters after paying 30,000 pounds to the abductor, who still killed the innocent child and threw his body in his sewer system, where the body, swollen and moldy, was exhumed.’
  • April 2013: Ten-year-old Sameh George, another church deacon in Minya, was likewise abducted by ‘unknown persons’ while on his way to church to participate in Holy Pascha prayers leading up to Orthodox Easter. His parents said that it was his custom to go to church and worship in the evening, but he failed to return and they received an anonymous phone call from his kidnappers informing them that they had the Christian child in their possession and would execute him unless they received 250,000 Egyptian pounds in ransom money.
  • April, 2013: Another Coptic Christian boy, 12-year-old Abanoub Ashraf, was also kidnapped right in front of his church in Shubra al-Khayma district. His abductors, four men, put a knife to his throat, dragged him to their car, opened fire on the church, and then sped away. Later they called the boy’s family demanding a large amount of money to ransom child’s life.

As for Coptic girls, they are even more vulnerable than Coptic boys and disappear with greater frequency.  As an International Christian Concern report puts it, ‘hundreds of Christian girls … have been abducted, forced to convert to Islam, and forced into marriage in Egypt. These incidents are often accompanied by acts of violence, including rape, beatings, and other forms of physical and mental abuse.'” Source – Raymond Ibrahim.

By Avi Issacharoff, The Times of Israel – “A team of researchers at an Israeli institute has found a surge in the number of suicide attacks in the last decade, with al-Qaeda behind the lion’s share of them.

A new report by the Institute for National Security Studies indicates a steep rise in the number of suicide bombings since the turn of the century, with 2013 seeing a jump over the year prior.

Researchers also found a growing threat of al-Qaeda terror activity against Israel, even though the Jewish state has yet to be significantly targeted.

The study was authored by Yoram Schweitzer, head of the institute’s terrorism research program, and researchers Einat Yogev and Yotam Rosner.

From the 1980s, when suicide bombings first came on the scene, until 2000, the majority of the approximately 200 such bombings were carried out by the Lebanese Shiite terror group Hezbollah.

Since 2000, however, around 3,500 suicide bombings have been recorded. The turning point came following the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

In all, al-Qaeda and jihadist groups have tallied more than 85 percent of the total suicide attacks worldwide, but in 2013 that figure rose to nearly 95%, the INSS study found.

Despite the relatively low number of suicide bombings compared to other tactics employed by terror groups, they resonate strongly thanks to both the number of lives they claim and their attack on public morale.

In the past year, terrorist groups launched 291 suicide attacks in 18 countries, killing around 3,100 people — a 25% rise in attacks compared to the year prior.

In a conversation with The Times of Israel, Schweitzer said that 2013 marked a significant rise in suicide bombings in Iraq, which constitutes a third of the global total with 98 attacks — a rise of 280% compared to the year before (only 35).” Read more.

Iranian Christians Hit With A Wave Of Arrests During Christmas

By Mohabat News – “According to Mohabat News, on December 31, 2013, Iranian security authorities arrested four Christian converts by the names of ‘Sara Rahimi-Nejad, Mostafa Nadri, Majid Sheidaei, and George Isaian’ in Karaj.

According to a report by the Human Right Activists in Iran, these Christians had gathered in Isaian’s residence to celebrate the New Year when plain-clothes security authorities raided the home, beat and arrested them. The authorities immediately transferred them to an unknown location.

The report added, the authorities searched Mr. Isaian’s house and all the guests. They seized some of their belongings including books, personal notes, computers, CDs and DVDs, Satellite TV receiver, and even their family photo albums.

The families of these Christian detainees were turned away when they went to Evin prison and to the Intelligence police to inquire about them.

One occasion when pressure on the Iranian Christian community intensifies is during Christmas and New Year. Every year near Christmas, Iranian authorities raid Christmas and New Year house church services/gatherings and arrest those worshiping and celebrating the birth of Jesus.

It should be remembered that in the last few weeks, during Christmas, another group of Christian converts had been arrested. Those arrested were Faegheh Nasrollahi, Mastaneh Rastegari, Amir-Hossein Nematollahi, Ahmad Bazyar, and Mr. Hosseini. They had gathered in a house church in eastern Tehran when they were arrested.

Reports on Christian persecution in Iran also indicated that the Revolutionary Court in Karaj sentenced Hossein Saketi Aramsari to one year in prison. He is currently being held in ward 7 of Karaj Central prison.

A few former Christian prisoners told Mohabat News in an interview, ‘We were both directly and indirectly pressured to make false confessions regarding our relationship with foreign countries. They wanted us to confess that we receive money to promote Christianity in the country’.

The Islamic regime of Iran is seriously concerned over the spread of Christianity across the country and does its best to counteract it.

The Iranian government uses every means possible to propagate against evangelical and house churches and describes them as a corrupted movement. The Islamic regime considers Christians a threat to national security and often targets them with security charges.

This year as well, Open Doors International published the World Watch List, a list of countries where Christians are persecuted the most. Open Doors also stated that Christian persecution is increasing around the world. The list ranked Iran among the top ten persecuting countries.” Source – Mohabat News.

News.com.au – “A MEMORIAL service has been held at a western Sydney mosque for slain Muslim woman Amira Karroum, and her husband Yusuf Ali.

Ms Karroum’s sister Rose requested the Masjid Noor mosque in Granville hold the service, last night, for worshippers to mourn the couple who were killed in Syria late last week.

Both Ms Karroum and Mr Ali were worshippers at the mosque before Mr Ali moved to Syria mid-last year.

Relatives today said arrangements were still being made to fly the couples’ bodies back to Australia for burial.

Pictured clad in a black burqa, Karroum bore no resemblance to the fresh-faced student from one of the country’s most prestigious Anglican schools when she died in a bullet-ridden house in Syria last week.

The 22-year-old had left her western Sydney home just days before Christmas, telling her family she was heading to Denmark to holiday with friends and then do some humanitarian work.

But on Saturday morning, Department of Foreign Affairs officials broke the news to Karroum’s father Mohamad and mother Honor Deane their daughter and her Muslim husband, Yusuf Ali, had died in the war-torn country, the latest victims of the conflict that has been raging since 2011.

Gold Coast-based Mr Karroum, who runs a kebab shop in Broadwater, collapsed with a heart attack after hearing the devastating news.

Amira Karroum and her husband were killed inside a house near the city of Aleppo, ground zero of the war near the border with Turkey, last Thursday, possibly by members of the Free Syrian Army, which is fighting government troops and other factions of the rebel movement trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

‘She went to that school because it was the best education, and an all-girls’ school… it suited our faith.’

He said Karroum did not wear a burqua or niqab, traditional Muslim dress for women, until a few years ago.

DailyPost learnt that they carried out the attack on Friday in Gwoza town of Gwoza Local Government council of Borno State.

Biye, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Damboa, Chibok and Gwoza federal constituency disclosed that a church, located close to his house was not spared by the assailants.

Speaking to DailyPost on Friday, the legislator said when the assailants stormed his house at Bzuba village along Gwoza Pulka road at night on Wednesday, they carted away over 70 domestic animals before setting the building on fire.

 He said about three weeks before the incident, he had raised alarm on the need for military authorities to intensify security in the area but nothing was done.

‘While in the house, the attackers burnt a consignment of sorghum which was meant for distribution to our people to cushion their hardships.

‘They also burnt 30,000 pieces of exercise books, 30,000 packets of biro and 30,000 packets of chalk which I bought for distribution to schools in my constituency.

‘When I got information from my people that the insurgents were in my village, I called the officer in charge of the area but he did not pick my call. It was the next day that he called back and told me that he was no longer in charge of the area’, he said.

There was no official statement from the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army but a senior military officer who spoke under anonymity confirmed the attack.” Source – Daily Post.
