The Jerusalem Post – “Until the leading Islamic scholars provide a peaceful theology that clearly contradicts the violent views of the IS, the existence of a ‘moderate Islam’ must be questioned.

The guiding principle of the Islamic State (IS) is that Muslims must fight non-Muslims all over the world and offer them the following choices: Convert to Islam, pay a humiliating tax called ‘Jijya,’ or be killed. This violent doctrine was the primary justification for the Islamic conquests by the early Muslims.

Following the latest in a long string of inhumane and barbaric attacks by the IS, who only offer these three options to non-Muslims, it becomes mandatory to ask whether this principle IS uses is Islamic or Un-Islamic.

In other words, can a young Muslim become more religious — and more obedient to Allah — without subscribing to this ancient brutality? Will he be able to find an approved Islamic theological source or interpretation that clearly contradicts this principle, or at least teaches it in a different way (i.e., contextualizing it in time and place)?

The sad answer is: No, he cannot.

Traditionally there are five sources for Islamic Law: the Koran, the Hadith of Prophet Mohamed (such as Sahih Al-Buchakry), the actions of the disciples of Mohamed (Sahaba), the four schools of Islamic jurisprudence, and the Tafseer (or Interpretations) of the Koran.

If a young Muslim were to do some research to examine whether what the IS is doing is in fact Islamic or Un-Islamic, he would find some shocking results.

The literal understanding of the Koran 9:29 can easily be used to justify what the IS is doing. ‘Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) – [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humiliated.’

But perhaps this young Muslim will decide to see if the Hadith of Al-Buchakry may explain it differently. The following Sahih (authentic) Hadith in Al-Buchakry also supports the violent IS ideology: Sahih al-Bukhari 6924—Muhammad said: ‘I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘La ilaha illallah’ (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and whoever said ‘No God other than Allah’ will save his property and his life from me.’

Feeling uncomfortable with the literal interpretations of such texts, the young Sunni Muslim might try to find an answer in the actions of the Sahaba. Sadly, the Sahaba (Disciples of Mohamed) were the ones who first used these principles to justify the Islamic conquests and the subjugation of non-Muslims to Islam.

The fourth source for Islamic law is the four schools of Islamic Jurisprudence, namely: Al-Shafeii, Al-Hanbali, Al-Hanafi, and Al- Maleki. These four schools, without a single exception, support the principle that Read more…

Even the equally demented mother seems to be amused at the sight. “Do not laugh too much,” says the “prophet” of Islam, “for laughing deadens the heart” (al-Tirmidhi, 2305; Ibn Maajah, 4193). By Naharnet – “A man who staged a sick prank by filming himself threatening to behead three Syrian refugee children has confessed that he was amused by their weeping and their mother actually loved the video, a police statement said on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a security official told Agence France-Presse that the video proved to be a ‘sick joke,’ and that the children had been left in the man’s care by their mother, his neighbor, while she went to buy groceries.

According to an Internal Security Forces communique, the now-detained 30-year-old man told interrogators that he gathered the kids in a room near the bakery he owns and threatened them ‘after he saw them trying to go down from their home’s balcony on a public phone pole.’

He said he wanted to scare them so that they don’t repeat the attempt.

‘He started filming because he liked the scene of the crying children, and that happened in the presence of Lebanese 14-year-old minor M. T.,’ the ISF said in its communique.

In a surprising twist, the kids’ mother arrived during the last moments of filming and she actually ‘loved the scene’ and asked that the video be sent to her phone.

The knife man, M. F., was referred to the relevant judicial authorities while the minor M. T. was released after his father signed a pledge.

The mom was also freed after she pledged to take good care of her children, the ISF said.

The man had been arrested Friday by ISF Intelligence Bureau agents in the southern town of Ebba in the Nabatiyeh province.

The video, which was posted on YouTube Friday and shared widely, shows the three terrified children crying as a man standing behind a camera waves a knife and asks: ‘Whom do we behead first?’

‘Put your hand here or else I will sever your head,’ he tells one of the terrified boys, who cry their lungs out throughout the video.

‘You, come here … Do you belong to Daesh?’ the man says, using an acronym for the full Arabic name of the extremist Islamic State group, which has recently beheaded two Lebanese soldiers.

Adding to the pathos of the incident, the crying children respond by pointing at each other.” Read more.

Making The “Prophet” Proud

By Robert Booth, The Guardian – “Graphic videos showing British and American hostages being murdered by Islamic State (Isis) fighters are stirring support among foreign jihadis who are excited by a new confrontation with the west, monitoring of Islamists’ social media activity suggests.

Barbarous online films, such as the two-and-a half-minute video showing the killing of British aid worker David Haines released on Saturday night, are ‘turning on’ jihadists in countries such as Tunisia and Libya who had previously reacted coolly to the civil war between the Sunni fundamentalists of Isis and the Shia minorities in Syria and Iraq.

Evidence from the Twitter, Facebook, Ask.fm and Instagram accounts of 450 foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq and others who follow them suggests the filmed murders and speeches attacking Washington and London appear to have made Isis’s cause more glamorous to extremists abroad, according to the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) at King’s College London.

The response may explain why Isis fighters have released the videos and have threatened to kill another Briton, Alan Henning. Some analysts have asked why Isis leaders would invite stronger military intervention from the west, but postings on social networks used by jihadis suggest the tactic could be aimed at widening support for Isis.

‘We have been monitoring the social media reaction and you can already see that the wannabe foreign fighters are excited by these killings,’ said Peter Neumann, director of the ICSR. ‘People in Tunisia and Libya are particularly interested in the prospect of fighting American and now British enemies. This is turning on people who were radicalised before this conflict started but weren’t particularly excited by the Sunni-Shia battle. There are three types of reaction. There is pure jubilation, comments that America and now Britain are getting what they deserve, and the thought that this is not pretty, but that this is the kind of thing that happens with revolutions.’

The man who beheaded Haines, a father of two born in Yorkshire and raised in Scotland, directly addressed David Cameron in the film, ridiculing him as ‘an obedient lapdog’ of Washington.

‘Your evil alliance with America, which continues to strike the Muslims of Iraq and most recently bombed the Haditha dam, will only accelerate your destruction,’ the masked man said.

There are already estimated to be more than 2,000 Isis fighters from Tunisia in Syria, but Neumann said the direct challenges to western leaders in the beheading videos were “an even stronger incentive for people who were sitting on the fence and thinking about going to fight”.” Read more.

A FRENCH journalist who was held hostage by rebels in Syria has given a chilling account of his ­ordeal at the hands of an Islamic terrorist who tortured him and bragged about beheading women and children.

Nicolas Henin, who was ­released in April, recalled last week how his captor, Mehdi Nemmouche, a French citizen of Algerian origin, appeared to take perverse pleasure in describing atrocities he had committed while fighting with Islamic State.

Nemmouche has since gone on trial in Belgium accused of the murder of four people in an attack on the Jewish museum in Brussels in May.

“Do you know what happens when I go into a Shi’ite home?” Henin recalled Nemmouche asking him one day. “First, there’s the grandmother — I only use one bullet on her, she’s not worth more — then the wife. First, I rape her, then I cut her throat.”

According to Henin — who was held for some time with James Foley, an American journalist murdered by Islamic State — Nemmouche continued: “Then I come to the baby. Ah, a baby! You cannot imagine the pleasure you get from cutting off a baby’s head.”

Nemmouche, 29, was the most brutal of several French jihadists guarding hostages in the basement of an eye hospital in Aleppo. Henin said Nemmouche had punched him several times in the face and ordered him to confess to being a French spy, which he ­denied. Nemmouche also terrorised about 50 Syrian prisoners in other cells. “The torture went on all night, until prayers at dawn,” Henin wrote in Le Point magazine.

“The howls of the prisoners ­alternated with shouts in French.”

For Henin, Nemmouche behaved like an “uncouth adolescent, eaten up by hatred and stupidity but not presenting the image you might expect of a terrorist”. Nemmouche idolised Mohamed Merah, who shot dead three French soldiers, a rabbi and three Jewish children in Toulouse in 2012. Nemmouche, he said, seemed less interested in dying as a “martyr” in Syria than getting on to the front pages.

CBC News – “ISIS militants fighting in Iraq and Syria released a video on Saturday that purports to show the beheading of British aid worker David Haines.

Reuters could not immediately verify the footage. Two U.S. journalists, James Foley and Steven Sotloff, have been executed by ISIS.

Haines, a 44-year-old father of two from Perth in Scotland, was kidnapped last year while working for the French agency ACTED.

British Prime Minister David Cameron condemned the killing and said he would bring the killers to justice.

‘This is a despicable and appalling murder of an innocent aid worker. It is an act of pure evil. My heart goes out to the family of David Haines who have shown extraordinary courage and fortitude throughout this ordeal,’ he said in a statement released by Downing Street.

‘We will do everything in our power to hunt down these murderers and ensure they face justice, however long it takes.’

The video entitled, ‘A Message to the Allies of America,’ opened with Cameron talking about working with the Iraqi government and allied Kurdish Peshmerga forces to defeat ISIS.

‘This British man has to pay the price for your promise, Cameron, to arm the Peshmerga against the Islamic State,’ said a masked man dressed in black with a British accent, standing over Haines, who was shown kneeling and wearing an orange jumpsuit.

The video then showed the beheading of the kneeling man.

At the end of the video, another hostage was shown and the masked man said he would be killed if Cameron continues to support the fight against ISIS.

In Washington, White House National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said she had no comment on the video and referred queries to the British government.” Read more.

Because, unless Obama wishes to somehow redefine what “victory” and a “destroyed” Islamic State looks like, the only chance to truly succeed militarily against ISIS is with American combat troops on the ground. This echoes recommendations made by the President’s own military leaders, advice that the President himself ultimately overruled in favor of a more “politically-palatable light footprint approach.” Anything more would fly directly in the face of Barack “I-Won-A-Nobel-Peace-Prize” Obama’s non-declaration of war …

By Carlo Angerer, NBC News – “Christians who have fled the bloody campaign of ISIS in Iraq said U.S. plans to snuff out the Sunni militants will not be enough and that American combat troops are their only hope.

President Barack Obama pledged overnight to lead a ‘broad coalition’ of allies to tackle the threat of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham – but without American combat troops.

‘Only Americans can fix it,’ said one man taking shelter in an unfinished building in Erbil, a city of 1.5 million that has become a safe haven for religious minorities who have escaped and fled religious persecution at the hands of ISIS militants. ‘They should just send their soldiers into Iraq and Syria, not just fight from the air.’

He and others, who requested anonymity out of fear for their lives, said they do not see how local, Iraqi forces can defeat the extremists.

‘I was with the Iraqi army in Mosul for four years and I can tell you we did not do anything, just collected a salary,’ said the man, who fled from the Christian town of Qaraqosh. Qaraqosh, once a town of 40,000, has been terrorized by ISIS fighters amassing power and laying down harsh Sharia law.

‘We’re happy that the U.S. is conducting air strikes,’ another man said. ‘But it’s not enough. We need something to happen now.’

‘When the Americans were in Mosul, we had no problems,’ another man said. ‘When they left, the troubles started.'” Source – NBC News.

Report: Obama Overruled ‘Best Military Advice’ On Ground Troops To Fight ISIS – “The Washington Post reports today that when the president tasked military leaders with devising the best strategy to defeat ISIS, the Pentagon presented a plan that involved a limited number of combat “boots on the ground.” … ‘Such a mission was not the U.S. military’s preferred option. Responding to a White House request for options to confront the Islamic State, Gen. Lloyd Austin, the top commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East, said that his best military advice was to send a modest contingent of American troops, principally Special Operations forces… The recommendation, conveyed to the White House by Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was cast aside in favor of options that did not involve U.S. ground forces in a front-line role …” Read more.

Obama Repeats US Mission On Defeating Islamic State But Avoids The Word ‘War’ – “President Obama on Saturday restated his plan to destroy Islamic State but did not say the United States ‘is at war’ with the Middle East terror group, creating more uncertainty what exactly is the U.S. mission… The president’s language was almost identical to what he said Wednesday when he told the country in a prime-time TV address that the U.S. would launch direct air strikes in Iraq on the terror group and that he has OK’d such strikes in Syria… However, conflicting and at times seemingly evolving messages from top U.S. officials since the address has sparked concern about the president’s exact goals …” Read more.

Al Arabiya – “Syrian rebels and jihadists from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria have agreed a non-aggression pact for the first time in a suburb of the capital Damascus, a monitoring group said on Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the ceasefire deal was agreed between ISIS and moderate and Islamist rebels in Hajar al-Aswad, south of the capital.

Under the deal, ‘the two parties will respect a truce until a final solution is found and they promise not to attack each other because they consider the principal enemy to be the Nussayri regime.’

Nussayri is a pejorative term for the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam to which President Bashar al-Assad belongs.

Syria’s armed opposition initially welcomed jihadists including Islamic State members in their fight against Assad.

But the group’s harsh interpretation of Islam and quest for domination of captured territory sparked a backlash against it that began in January.

A coalition of rebel groups pushed IS out of much of northern Syria, but it has recaptured much of that territory in recent months and has a strong presence in Hajar al-Aswad.

More than 180,000 people have been killed in Syria since the beginning of the uprising against Assad that began in March 2011.” Source – Al Arabiya.
