Pakistan: Christian Denied Medical School For Not Memorizing the Qur’an – “Haroon Arif, a student from DG Khan in Punjab, could not get high enough marks to get into medical school. This is a standard situation for many young people in the country. What’s different here is that Haroon, who missed the grade by less than 0.1%, would have earned 20 extra marks if he was Hafiz-e-Quran. He tried to claim his knowledge of the Bible was equivalent, but this made no impact. ‘I deserved it and yet just because I am Christian, I have been put at a disadvantage,’ Haroon says. He found out about the discrimination on viewing the results at his test centre last month. ‘There was a separate column for Hafiz-e-Quran, and I found out that those who had memorised the holy book got 20 extra marks,’ he adds. Haroon got A grades in both matriculation and intermediate exams, but was an agonising 0.0255% behind the line for medical school in his final aggregate. This miniscule figure changed the course of his life.” Read more.

Apparently, Allah is only “the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful” when you’re not confused …

“A YOUNG Saudi journalist is facing calls for his execution after tweeting about the Prophet Mohammed, and the kingdom’s top clerics are demanding his trial after denouncing him as an ‘apostate’.

On the occasion of the Muslim prophet’s birthday last week, 23-year-old Hamza Kashgari tweeted: ‘I have loved things about you and I have hated things about you and there is a lot I don’t understand about you.’

‘I will not pray for you,’ he added.

The controversial tweet sparked a frenzy of responses – some 30,000, according to an online service that tracks tweets in the Arab world.

In one response, Abdullah, a lawyer, said that since Mr Kashgari was ‘an adult… we should accept nothing but implementing the ruling according to Islamic law’ or sharia.

Insulting the prophet is considered blasphemous in Islam, and is a crime punishable by death.

Mr Kashgari quickly apologised for his remarks, but the calls for his execution only multiplied.

A Facebook page entitled ‘The Saudi people demand Hamza Kashgari’s execution’ already has nearly 10,000 members.” Read more.

In a separate report, newspapers quoted a statement by the kingdom’s Islamic Fatwa Committee calling for punishing Kashgari in line with Islamic law, which means he could be executed.” Read more.

Hadith: Bukhari 9.84.57, “Muhammad said, ‘Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.’”

Sura 8:12b, “… terrorize and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur’an.”

Sura 8:12b, “… terrorize and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur’an.”

“NAIROBI, Kenya, February 8 (CDN) — Islamic extremists from the rebel al Shabaab militia in Somalia beheaded a Christian on the outskirts of Mogadishu last month, sources said.

The militants fighting the transitional government in Mogadishu murdered Zakaria Hussein Omar, 26, on Jan. 2 in Cee-carfiid village, about 15 kilometers (nine miles) outside of the Somali capital, they said. Omar had worked for a Christian humanitarian organization that al Shabaab banned last year.

His body was left lying for 20 hours before nomads found it and carried it into Mogadishu, a close friend said.

‘We have been communicating with Omar, and he was sharing with me his life as a Christian,’ the friend said. ‘Last year he mentioned to me that his life was in danger when the NGO [Non-Governmental Organization] he worked for was banned by the al Shabaab.’

The friend said he identified the body.

‘One of the persons who saw him said, ‘This is the young man who stayed in Ethiopia, and people have been saying that he left Islam and joined Christianity.”

Omar converted to Christianity seven years ago while in Ethiopia, where he lived with relatives. He returned to Somalia in 2008 and completed his university education in 2009 with a degree in accounting.

Omar had married in the latter part of 2010. He is survived by his wife, his parents (originally from central Somalia), a brother and four sisters.

Last September, the militants beheaded another young Christian near Mogadishu. The militants, who have vowed to rid Somalia of Christianity, killed Guled Jama Muktar on Sept. 25 in his home near Deynile, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Mogadishu.

Earlier that month, a kidnapped Christian convert from Islam was found decapitated on the outskirts of Hudur City in Bakool region, in southwestern Somalia. Juma Nuradin Kamil was forced into a car by three suspected Islamic extremists from the al Shabaab terrorist group on Aug. 21, 2011 and murdered on Sept. 2, area sources said.” Read more.

New Zealand: Up To 800 Birds Found Dead at Wetlands in Eastern Suburbs of Christchurch, Avian Botulism Suspected

“Up to 800 birds have been found dead at wetlands in Christchurch’s eastern suburbs and the oxidation ponds.

The Christchurch City Council said yesterday that during the past few weeks dead birds have been found on the banks of the oxidation ponds in Bromley.

Dead birds have also been found in the Bexley area and the Travis Wetland.

Council ornithologist Andrew Crossland said between 600 and 800 dead birds had been found.

‘The earthquakes in Christchurch have caused a lot of changes to water quality but also to effluent levels at the oxidation ponds,’ he said.

‘It’s got nothing to do with anything physical such as liquefaction but more to do with the fluctuating water levels and changes like that.’

Investigations were underway but the initial diagnosis was avian botulism, a paralysing disease caused by a toxin which thrives in shallow, warm water.” Source – The Press.

Report: Assad Forces In Southern Part of Syrian Golan Heights Move Closer to Israel, Mulls Use of Chemical Weapons in Homs

02/09/2012 2 comments

By Gil Ronen – “According to reports from the Free Syria Army, the Syrian military has moved forces stationed in the southern part of the Syrian Golan Heights closer to Israel.

The Syrian military did not come close to the border with Israel. However, armored forces that were stationed along the Syria-Jordan border, which were recently reinforced, were moved closer to Israel, according to the report.

The Free Syria Army is the largest opposition group in Syria and is partly made up of defectors from the official Syrian Army.

Israel is concerned that Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad, whose regime is on the verge of collapse, may try to defuse the uprising against him by starting a conflict with Israel.

A Lebanese newspaper, The People’s Army, claimed Thursday in its news website that the IDF has been making an extra effort in the past few days to place landmines all along its border with Syria.” Read more.

Flashback: Expert: A Threatened Assad May Attack Israel – “Middle East expert Professor Eyal Zisser warned on Monday against a possible Syrian attack on Israel, if President Bashar Assad feels threatened by the anti-regime protesters. In an interview with Arutz Sheva, Zisser said that in the short term there is no reason for particular concern, because a situation which is bad for Assad is good for Israel as this means that the Syrian president is preoccupied with his internal affairs and not with attacking Israel.” Read more.

Assad forces mull use of chemical weapons in Homs, opposition says – “Syria’s military has begun stockpiling chemical weapons and equipping its soldiers with gas masks near the city of Homs, opposition sources reported on Thursday. Israeli Defense Minister Fears Arms Transfer to Hizbullah – “Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned Thursday that sophisticated weapons could be transferred from Syria to Lebanon and to the Hizbullah terror organization, should Bashar al-Assad fall. ‘You have to be alert to the possibility, so that during the fall of the regime there will not be the transfer of sophisticated Syrian weapons to Hizbullah and Lebanon,’ Barak told Army radio. ‘We are tracking this issue constantly and carefully,’ he said, without elaborating further. Barak said Israeli assessments suggest Assad’s downfall is only a matter of time, ‘The fate of the regime of Bashar al-Assad is sealed; his situation is getting worse every week.'” Read more.

Australia: NSW Farmers Could Lose At Least $750 Million From Devasting Floods

02/09/2012 Leave a comment

By Adam Bennett – “The agricultural industry is expected to suffer losses of at least $750 million as a result of the devastating NSW floods, with tens of thousands of livestock at risk.

As floodwaters from Queensland and northern NSW slowly flow towards western NSW townships such as Walgett and Bourke, farmers are already counting the cost of flooding around Moree and in the Brewarrina district.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Flood Incident Controller, Simon Oliver, said up 10,000 sheep had most likely been lost to the floodwaters, while extensive damage to crops, pastures and infrastructure was also being recorded.

A further 100,000 livestock in areas downstream were also at risk, and the DPI was now working to help farmers relocate animals to higher ground.

‘There is a conservative figure being thrown around from a preliminary estimate of $750 million, that includes all impacts on primary industries like damage to infrastructure, the cotton fields and roads, buildings and fodder storages, estimated stock losses, pasture losses and crop losses,’ Mr Oliver told AAP.

‘Obviously those figures are going to change significantly as we can get a better idea as the water clears.'” Read more.

Peru: Over 200 Dolphins Found Dead Along 106 Kilometer Stretch of Lambayeque Beaches

By Manuel Vigo – “This week more than 200 dolphins were found dead along a 106-kilometer stretch at the beaches of Lambayeque.

Authorities have not yet been able to determine the cause of the deaths.

According to El Comercio, Edward Barriga, head of Peru’s Ocean Institute (Imarpe) in Lambayeque, ordered samples be sent to Lima, for further analysis.

‘Soon we will announce the root causes,’ Barriga said.

Barriga said he had also found considerable quantities of dead anchovies on the beaches between the district of San jose and Palo Parado, in Morrope.

Jorge Torres Cabrejos, head of the Lambayeque’s Association of Maritime Growers, said the dolphins might have eaten the dead anchovies, who had died from decomposing plankton, caused by heavy pollution.

According to El Comercio, Torres denied that local fisherman were to blame for the dolphins’ deaths.

Last month Imarpe investigated the death of several dolphins and sea lions in the beaches of Piura.

Local media said the deaths could have been the result of oil spills in the area.” Source – Peru This Week.

Egypt: Muslim Council Evicts 8 Christian Families, Properties Seized, Mobs Torch Three Homes

02/09/2012 Leave a comment

“(AINA) — National and international rights groups have consistently criticized the recourse to the so-called ‘reconciliation meetings’ — dubbed ‘Bedouin sittings’ — that take place between Copts and Muslim assailant after every attack on Copts. The meetings are conducted under the auspices of state security. Last week a series of meetings were held by radical Muslims to decide on the fate of the Copts in a village in Alexandria, and Muslims insisted that the whole Coptic population of 62 families must be deported because of an unsubstantiated accusation levied against one Coptic man.

Copts in the village of Kobry-el-Sharbat (El-Ameriya), Alexandria, were attacked on January 27 by a mob of 3000 Muslims led by Salafi leaders, who looted and torched homes and shops belonging to Copts. The violence was prompted by allegations made by a Muslim barber named Toemah that a 34-year-old Coptic tailor, Mourad Samy Guirgis, had on his mobile phone illicit photos of a Muslim woman. Mourad denied the accusation and surrendered to the police for fear for his life. Muslims looted and torched his workshop and home after he surrendered to the police, and his entire family, including his parents and his married brother Romany, were evicted from the village. He is still in police detention. (AINA 1-28-2012).

Three ‘reconciliation meetings’ were held at the El-Ameriya village police headquarters. They were attended by Salafi and Muslim Brotherhood representatives from neighboring villages, as well as church representative. Muslims demanded the eviction of all Coptic inhabitants from the village because ‘Muslim honour had been damaged.’

Many believe that the mobile phone story was fabricated as an excuse to start violence against the Copts. According to the police, the woman in question denied the story and no photos were found on Mourad’s mobile phone, according to Ihab Aziz, a Coptic-American activist who is presently in Egypt.

During the first reconciliation meeting it was agreed that only Copts who were directly involved with the Mourad incident would be evicted, and the church demanded compensation of two million pounds for the innocent Copts whose homes and businesses were torched on January 27. Muslims, especially Salafis from the neighboring villages, refused any kind of compensation and insisted on the eviction of all Copts.

On January 30 a Muslim mob attacked Copts in Kobry-el-Sharbat for the second time, and torched three Coptic homes in the presence of the security forces, ‘which took the role of an onlooker and made no effort to stop the violence,’ according to Joseph Malak, lawyer for the Coptic church in Alexandria. ‘This proves that the assailants were not afraid of the security forces or the law.’

Muslim representatives demanded the eviction of the wealthy Coptic merchant Abeskhayroun Soliman, together with his four married sons and their families, accusing them of causing sedition by shooting in the air when Muslims broke into and torched their home while the family was inside. ‘No one was wounded due to the alleged shootings, which the family says never took place. The police authorities issued an arrest warrant for two of the Soliman sons,’ said Ihab Aziz.” Read more.
