Freshwater Fish In North America Going Extinct At An Alarming Rate
Terra Daily – ” North American freshwater fishes are going extinct at an alarming rate compared with other species, according to an article in the September issue of BioScience. The rate of extinctions increased noticeably after 1950, although it has leveled off in the past decade. The number of extinct species has grown by 25 percent since 1989.
The article, by Noel M. Burkhead of the US Geological Survey, examines North American freshwater fish extinctions from the end of the 19th Century to 2010, when there were 1213 species in the continent, or about 9 percent of the Earth’s freshwater fish diversity.
At least 57 North American species and subspecies, and 3 unique populations, have gone extinct since 1898, about 3.2 percent of the total. Freshwater species generally are known to suffer higher rates of extinction than terrestrial vertebrates.
Extinctions in fishes are mostly caused by loss of habitat and the introduction of nonindigenous species. In North America, there are more freshwater fish species in a typical drainage to the east of the Great Continental Divide than to the west, where a greater proportion of species have gone extinct or are found nowhere else.
Estimating the number of extinctions relies on scrutiny of historical records and careful estimation procedures, since the last populations of a species are often recognized as such only in hindsight-there is typically a lag of several years from the last observation of a species and its estimated year of extinction.
Estimates are complicated by the fact that, on average, 6.7 new species are discovered each year, and occasionally a species thought to have gone extinct is ‘rediscovered.’
Nonetheless, Burkhead concludes that between 53 and 86 species of North American freshwater fishes are likely to have gone extinct by 2050, and that the rate of extinction is now at least 877 times the background extinction rate over geological time.” Source – Terra Daily.
The Mississippi River Is Drying Up As Food Prices Continue To Surge

The Mississippi has become very thin and very narrow, and if it keeps on dropping there is a very real possibility that all river traffic could get shut down. And considering the fact that approximately 60 percent of our grain (NYSEARCA:JJG), 22 percent of our oil (NYSEARCA:USO) and natural gas (NYSEARCA:UNG), and and one-fifth of our coal travel down the Mississippi River, that would be absolutely crippling for our economy. It has been estimated that if all Mississippi River traffic was stopped that it would cost the U.S. economy 300 million dollars a day. So far most of the media coverage of this historic drought has focused on the impact that it is having on farmers and ranchers, but the health of the Mississippi River is also absolutely crucial to the economic success of this nation, and right now the Mississippi is in incredibly bad shape. In some areas the river is already 20 feet below normal and the water is expected to continue to drop. If we have another 12 months of weather ahead of us similar to what we have seen over the last 12 months then the mighty Mississippi is going to be a complete and total disaster zone by this time next year.
Most Americans simply do not understand how vitally important the Mississippi River is to all of us. If the Mississippi River continues drying up to the point where commercial travel is no longer possible, it would be an absolutely devastating blow to the U.S. economy.

Closing The Mighty Mississippi Will Affect People All Over The Country – “The Mississippi river is drying up and some shipping companies are worried that the drought of 1988 may be repeated, a time when the river dried up so much that barge traffic came to a standstill. In 1988 the shipping industry lost $1 billion, a number that would be far higher in 2012 and could be reached in as little as three days. Almost all of the rivers 2,500 miles are experiencing some type of low water level. Just outside of Memphis the river is 13 feet below normal depth while the National Weather Service says Vicksburg, Mississippi is 20 feet below normal levels… Closing the Mississippi will affect people all over the country, barges, tugboats and towboats ship petroleum, grain, fertilizer, sand, gravel, steel and other items that will raise in price if their means of transportation are severed for much of the United States. According to Time, ‘About 60% of the country’s grain exports and one-fifth of its coal is transported along the nation’s inland waterway system.'” Read more.
New Jersey: Pesticides Blamed After Dozens of Dead Birds Fall From The Sky Like ‘Something Out Of A Movie’
By Dan Stamm, NBC10 – “Residents in a Cumberland County community were left wondering Tuesday morning what caused dozens of birds to drop dead from the sky.
Residents along Peach Drive in Millville found at least 80 birds — many red-winged blackbirds — on the ground dead having fallen from trees and the sky. One neighbor even said he saw the birds falling out of the air.
‘Crazy — something out of a movie,’ said resident Michelle Cavalieri who saw the birds fall from the sky.
The birds caused a bloody mess on roadways in the residential neighborhood.
‘They’d get up and try and fly and they were out of control so they’d crash and fall again,’ said resident Jim Sinclair. ‘It was just strange.’
Animal control, public health officials and other emergency crews were on the scene later Tuesday morning collecting dead birds to try and figure out exactly what caused so many of them to die.” Read more.

By Raymond Ibrahim – “According to today’s issue of El Fegr, ‘Elements of terrorist, jihadi organizations distributed leaflets today inciting for the killing of Copts in Suez, Ismailia, and Upper Egypt, promising them [Copts] a tragic end if they do not return to the truth.’
An image of a copy of the letter appears on El Fegr’s website. Titled ‘An Urgent and Important Notice,’ it begins by calling on ‘all brothers and sisters’ to ‘kill or physically attack the enemies of the religion of Allah—the Christians in all of Egypt’s provinces, the slaves of the Cross, Allah’s curse upon them…’ It proceeds to promise a monetary reward for whoever helps ‘achieve Allah’s rights against his enemies.’
As a testimony to how safe the jihadi organizations of today’s Egypt feel under the new president, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Muhammad Morsi, the usual cryptic language is dropped, as the letter names contact points and even a mosque, Sheikh Ahmed Mosque in Kasfrit, where those interested should rally ‘after Friday prayers where new members to the organization will be welcomed.’
This genocide has been called until Egypt’s Christians ‘return to the truth,’ a reference apparently meaning that Egypt’s Christians must either embrace ‘the truth’—that is, Islam, which they must convert to—or else return to the truths of the religion, which holds that Christians must embrace their subhuman dhimmi status (Koran 9:29).
Both forced conversions and dhimmi status for Christians are a regular feature of Egypt’s landscape, past and present.

‘Catastrophic’: Butane-Filled Well In Louisiana Could Explode, Releasing As Much Energy As 100 Hiroshima Bombs
By Deborah Dupre -“A possible breach of a butane-filled well 1500 feet from Bayou Corne’s sinkhole, the size of three football fields, is so ‘very serious,’ it has Assumption Parish sheriff and local residents ordered to evacuate worried about a catastrophic explosion, one according to scientists in an Examiner investigation, would be in the range of one and a half B83 thermonuclear (hydrogen) bombs, the most powerful United States weapons in active service.
‘The disaster is made all the more worrisome because the hole is believed to be close to a well containing 1.5 million barrels of liquid butane, a highly volatile liquid that turns into a highly flammable vapor upon release,’ CNN reported Friday about Louisiana’s declared State of Emergency.
Earlier it was reported the butane-filled well is only 1500 feet from the sinkhole and it will not be emptied.
A breach of that well, Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack said, could be ‘catastrophic,’ CNN reports.
If ignited, the butane well would release as much explosive energy as 100 Hiroshima bombs, Deborah Dupré’s scientist sources told her Sunday.
Friday, officials went door-to-door in the Bayou Corn area to complete questionnaires, including next of kin contact details of locals at home after the mandatory evacuation orders, as Fox News reported, while ABC reported, ‘If any of the dangers seem to become more imminent,’ the present mandatory order will be ‘escalated to a forced evacuation.’
Some residents of Louisiana’s cultural gumbo of Assumption Parish think dangers are more imminent now, despite state Department of Health & Hospitals Office of Public Health officials’ letter to parish officials about air and water testing data.
‘Based on their testing, it doesn’t appear that chemical exposure of site-related contaminants pose a public health risk in the immediate area of Bayou Corne,’ parish officials said.
Since Saturday, disaster workers are required to wear respirators, although the public within the disaster area is not.

‘You can give us a straight answer because that’s all we want,’ a woman said at the community meeting Tuesday. ‘We want to know when we can come home and be safe. Because you all go home after a days work. You’re safe, but we’re not,’ she said, expressing sentiments of other locals with whom Dupré has spoken.” Read more.
Japan: Fukushima Radiation Causing Genetic Mutations In Multiple Generations Of Butterflies
By Shingo Ito, AFP – “Genetic mutations have been found in three generations of butterflies from near Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, scientists said Tuesday, raising fears radiation could affect other species.
Around 12 percent of pale grass blue butterflies that were exposed to nuclear fallout as larvae immediately after the tsunami-sparked disaster had abnormalities, including smaller wings and damaged eyes, researchers said.
The insects were mated in a laboratory well outside the fallout zone and 18 percent of their offspring displayed similar problems, said Joji Otaki, associate professor at Ryukyu University in Okinawa, southwestern Japan.
That figure rose to 34 percent in the third generation of butterflies, he said, even though one parent from each coupling was from an unaffected population.
The researchers also collected another 240 butterflies in Fukushima in September last year, six months after the disaster. Abnormalities were recorded in 52 percent of their offspring, which was ‘a dominantly high ratio’, Otaki told AFP.
Otaki said the high ratio could result from both external and internal exposure to radiation, from the atmosphere and in contaminated foodstuffs…
Otaki later carried out a comparison test in Okinawa exposing unaffected butterflies to low levels of radiation, with the results showing similar rates of abnormality, he said.
‘We have reached the firm conclusion that radiation released from the Fukushima Daiichi plant damaged the genes of the butterflies,’ Otaki said…
Researchers and medical doctors have so far denied that the accident at Fukushima would cause an elevated incidence of cancer or leukaemia, diseases that are often associated with radiation exposure.
But they also noted that long-term medical examination is needed especially due to concerns over thyroid cancer among young people — a particular problem for people following the Chernobyl catastrophe.
‘There are a number of unknown factors surrounding the genetic impact of radiation,’ said Makoto Yamada, a medical doctor who examines Fukushima residents. ‘We still cannot 100 percent deny that the impact may come out in the future.'” Read more.

US Officials: Russian Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarine Sailed In Gulf Of Mexico For Weeks Undetected

By Bill Gertz – “A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.
It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.
The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.
The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilities—forces that are facing cuts under the Obama administration’s plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.
The Navy is in charge of detecting submarines, especially those that sail near U.S. nuclear missile submarines, and uses undersea sensors and satellites to locate and track them.
The fact that the Akula was not detected in the Gulf is cause for concern, U.S. officials said.
The officials who are familiar with reports of the submarine patrol in the Gulf of Mexico said the vessel was a nuclear-powered Akula-class attack submarine, one of Russia’s quietest submarines.
A Navy spokeswoman declined to comment.
One official said the Akula operated without being detected for a month.
‘The Akula was built for one reason and one reason only: To kill U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines and their crews,’ said a second U.S. official.” Read more.
Powerful, Deep 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Eastern Russia
“An earthquake occurred late this afternoon in the Sea of Okhotsk but poses no threat of a tsunami in Hawaii, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
The quake, 7.7 on the Richter scale, occurred at 5 p.m. about 102 miles east of Poronaysk in Sakhalin Island, the center said. Earlier reports has the magnitude at 7.3.
The quake occurred about 350 miles below the surface of the ocean, the center said. It was west of the Kuril Islands that stretch from Hokkaido, Japan, to Kamchatka, Russia.” Source – Star Advertiser.

Sweden: Experts Baffled By ‘Mystery’ Illness Killing Elk, ‘There Is No Scientific Explanation’
SOTT – “A unexplained illness has been plaguing the elk community of southern Sweden, with experts perplexed as to why so many are being found dead or dying.
The elk population around Blekinge in southern Sweden has been threatened by an unexplained disease.
14 adult elk have recently been found in the woods in severe states of paralysis, emaciation and blindness.
The blindness has resulted in some falling victim to traffic accidents; however experts have been left scratching their heads at to what is actually causing the illness.
‘There is no scientific explanation,’ said Lennart Balk of the Stockholm University to the Aftonbladet newspaper.
Balk has been researching the mortality of elk, and has pointed to the tens of thousands of wild birds that have also died in the area by a lack of thiamine, or vitamine B1, as a possible link.
‘We see that the elk are infected with the same clinical symptomatology, but it is too early to say whether it’s the same disease,’ he said.
Meanwhile, the National Veterinary Institute (Statens veterinärmedicinska anstalt, SVA) is making an investigation into the deaths, but is yet to find any concrete results.
Viral and parasitic infections have been ruled out, and so have possible contaminants in the environment.
‘It’s a mystery. These are animals that are in good condition. They are confused, and the one bull we had in was emaciated. We don’t know what’s causing it,’ said Torsten Mörner of the SVA to the paper, adding that it’s ‘strange’ that something would stop an elk from eating over the summer.” Source – SOTT.
Guam: Large Fish Kill Discovered At Pago Bay, ‘The First Time It’s Ever Been Noticed … To Have A Fish Kill Like This’
By Clynt Ridgell, Pacific News Center -“Guam – Last week dead fish were found mysteriously washing up along the shores of Pago bay. Today PNC went to Pago Bay to investigate the possible cause of this unusual phenomenon.
On Thursday of last week a student at the University of Guam’s marine lab noticed a lot of dead fish along the short in Pago bay. He took pictures of the fish and forwarded them to UOG marine lab professor Dr. Jason Biggs. ‘Well one of the things that set up a red flag for me is that this is the first time that it’s ever been noticed for Pago bay to have a fish kill like this,’ said Dr. Biggs.
Department of agriculture fisheries biologist Brent Tibbats also examined the photos. He says they appear to be shallow water fish that live in the reef flats and sea grass. Based on the photos, which show that many of the fish died with open mouths, Tibbats believes that natural causes are the most likely culprit…
However, as Dr. Biggs has pointed out this is the first time that they’ve seen this at Pago bay. ‘Over the past we’ve noticed areas where it happens commonly actually are Tumon bay is one and down along the southeast coast kind of from Ipan beach park down to first beach those areas something about them seems to be where fish kills repeatedly during these low tides during the middle of the day,’ said Tibbats.
Nevertheless Dr. Biggs is concerned that something else maybe the cause of this strange event.” Read more.
