Nearly One Million Ivorians Uprooted by Conflict: UNHCR

03/25/2011 Leave a comment

“By Stephany Nebehay – GENEVA (Reuters) – Up to one million Ivorians have now fled fighting in the main city Abidjan alone, with others uprooted across the country, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said on Friday as violence escalated in a 4-month power struggle.

Hours ahead of a U.N. Security Council debate, France announced it had submitted a draft U.N. resolution banning the use of heavy weapons in Abidjan. The United Nations has accused forces loyal to incumbent Laurent Gbagbo of such attacks, which his camp strenuously denies.

‘The massive displacement in Abidjan and elsewhere is being fuelled by fears of all-out war,’ UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told a news briefing in Geneva.

‘Available estimates are that between 700,000 and one million could now be displaced,’ Fleming told reporters.”  Read more.

Who Dill Defend Christians in Egypt?

03/25/2011 Leave a comment

By GEOFFREY P. JOHNSTON – “… During last winter’s people power demonstrations in Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the democratic uprising, Christians and Muslims peacefully coexisted as they demanded the end of Mubarak’s 30 year dictatorial reign.

Since then, the promise of Christian-Muslim unity has given way to religiously-motivated attacks on Egypt’s large Coptic Christian community, which is estimated to have ten million members…

For decades, the Egyptian government has openly persecuted Christians. For example, says Bashir, the country’s security services have interfered in Coptic affairs, obstructing the basic maintenance of churches and blocking building permits for new churches.

Islamic terrorists are an even greater threat to Coptic Christians.

In the aftermath of the bloody New Year’s Day bombing of a Coptic church at Alexandria, Egypt, which killed 23 people, Canada’s Coptic community, which has itself been threatened with violence by al Qaida, publicly demanded that Egypt protect their co-religionists.

‘Unfortunately, the situation is quickly getting worse,’ says a Canadian Coptic activist, who cannot be identified in order to protect loved ones still living in Egypt.”  Read more.

Myo Thein – “New Delhi (Mizzima) – Around 4,000 fishermen from the Pyapon area may have lost their lives in vicious storms that struck Irrawaddy Division last week, according to Win Kyaing, the general secretary of the Myanmar Fisheries Federation.

Win Kyaing said in a meeting held by the Myanmar Fisheries Federation on Tuesday that the 4,000 fishermen represent about 2,000 fishing rafts that were lost in storms from March 14 to 17, according to a reporter who attended the meeting.

The number of dead or missing is difficult to determine, said authorities.

‘His estimation of the missing is based on the total number of rafts. There are about 1,500 registered rafts and 500 unregistered rafts [in the area]. A raft can carry around three people each. That’s why he estimated that more than 4,000 people are missing’, the reporter said. The rafts are manned by fisherman who go out daily to catch fish and work their nets.”  Read more.

As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain.By Lindsay William-Ross – “Just when you thought it was safe to go to the hospital, or elderly care facility comes the SUPERBUG. This superbug happens to be a ‘deadly bacteria thought to be resistant to all known remedies.’ And it’s here. In Los Angeles. The Daily Breeze explains that the superbug is technically ‘a multiresistant form of Klebsiella pneumoniae, also known as CRKP,’ which “was formally thought to be contained to the East Coast.” Thanks a lot, East Coast!

To date, 365 cases of CRKP have been found in Los Angeles County, with most of the cases being ‘elderly patients at skilled nursing facilities and long-term care facilities.’ No, you’re not in the clear: ‘[L]ab results also show a small percentage of cases at acute care hospitals.’

The superbug is serious … deadly serious. Doctor and infectious disease expert Brad Spellberg admits CRKP has killed patients at County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance. Because it is resistant to all antibiotics, treating it is a gamble. Spellberg describes the treatment process: ‘We’re at the point with some of this (resistant bacteria) that we’re just mixing a bunch of crap together, throwing it at the patient and crossing our fingers.'”  Read more.

By Malcolm Moore – “North Korea’s government food distribution programme will run dry in May and put one-quarter of the country’s 24 million people at risk of starvation, the United Nations has warned.

The UN World Food Programme, which resumed sending food aid to North Korea in 2006, blamed flooding, foot-and-mouth disease, and an unusually cold winter for devastating food supplies to the country.

‘Vulnerable members of society are currently facing increasing shocks to their daily coping strategies, leaving them on a knife edge,’ the WFP said in a statement.”  Source.

By Dan de Luce “CAESAREA, Israel — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told US Defence Secretary Robert Gates on Friday that Israel is ready to act with “great force” in response to a spate of rocket fire by Gaza militants and a deadly bus bombing in Jerusalem.

Israel had been ‘subjected to bouts of terror and rocket attacks,’ Netanyahu told reporters before going into a meeting with Gates.

‘We stand ready to act with great force and great determination to put a stop to it,’ he added, with police saying Israel had not been hit by any projectiles Friday morning.

Netanyahu said he had received a ‘very warm’ telephone call from US President Barack Obama on Thursday expressing his condolences after the latest flare-up in violence.

‘Any civilised society will not tolerate such wanton attacks on its civilians,’ he said.”  Read more.

Japan Official: Fukushima Reactor No. 3 with MOX Fuel May Be Breached and Leaking Radioactive Material

03/25/2011 1 comment

Read here about the type of fuel that is being used in reactor No. 3.

By the CNN Wire Staff – “Tokyo (CNN) — Authorities in Japan raised the prospect Friday of a likely breach in the all-important containment vessel of the No. 3 reactor at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, a potentially ominous development in the race to prevent a large-scale release of radiation.

Contaminated water likely seeped through the containment vessel protecting from the reactor’s core, said Hidehiko Nishiyama of the Japan nuclear and industrial safety agency.

Three men working inside the No. 3 reactor stepped into water this week that had 10,000 times the amount of radiation typical for that locale, Nishiyama said. That water likely indicates ‘some sort of leakage’ from the reactor core, signaling a possible break of the containment vessel that houses the core.”  Read more.

Radiation Is Extending Beyond Safety Zone, Report Says

“By JURO OSAWA – TOKYO—Levels of radioactivity from Japan’s damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex are above government limits for infants in some areas outside the plant’s 12-mile evacuation zone, according to the latest estimate to fuel an international debate over how close civilians should be allowed to the plant.

The new estimate, by a state-funded monitoring body, came as fears over Tokyo’s tap water eased. Tests Thursday showed radioactive material in a major plant supplying water to the capital has fallen beneath the level the government says could pose long-term health risks to infants. Elevated levels at the plant Tuesday and Wednesday sparked official warnings and bottled-water sales.

Japan’s Nuclear Safety Technology Center, a government monitoring group, released the estimate late Wednesday of the cumulative exposure to radiation in zones surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi complex. The estimate covered the 12 days since Japan’s March 11 earthquake and tsunami spurred fires, explosions and spikes in radioactivity levels at the complex.”  Read more.

Ethiopia’s Muslims Attack Christians

AARON MAASHO – “The hollow chants of ‘Allahu Akbar!’ reverberating from a distance seemed innocuous at first for Abera Gutema, who ventured home quietly from his shop just a short distance away. But moments later, a large, angry mob of machete-wielding Muslim youths descended on his family’s dwelling and chased him out, before burning and looting his property.

Abera, a Christian, escaped through a back door, clutching his infant son Eyoel in one hand.

By the time the smoke cleared, all that remained of his hard-earned belongings had been reduced to rubble, not to mention the theft of 100,000 birr ($6,000) — his lifetime savings.

‘They were our friends, our neighbours with whom we shared everything,’ said Abera, his eyes watering with tears.

‘I never thought that this day would ever come.'”  Read more.

“International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that on March 5 Islamists kidnapped and killed a pastor in Oulata, Mauritania.  Pastor Ahmadou Abu Bakr’s bullet-ridden body was found dumped on the outskirts of the city on the morning of March 6th.

Last year, Pastor Ahmadou had fled the city of Nema to Oulata, because he was threatened by a local Islamist group affiliated with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) because of his Christian witness.  Pastor Ahmadou’s murderers arrived from Nema in a 4-by-4 pickup truck, according to an eyewitness who asked to remain anonymous for security reasons.”  Read more.

Egypt’s Christians Fear Radical Muslim Takeover

03/24/2011 Leave a comment

CBN News – “Many Christians in Egypt are concerned that members of the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists are poised to takeover the unstable country after a recent vote to amend Egypt’s Constitution.

Nearly 80 percent of Egyptians voted over the weekend in favor of a referendum that would ease restrictions on political participation and limit the presidency to two four-year terms.

The majority of Egypt’s tiny Christian community voted against the constitutional amendments.

Ramez Atallah, leader of the Bible Society of Egypt, is among the opponents.”  Source.

Christian in Bangladesh Goes to Prison for Evangelism

03/24/2011 1 comment

“DHAKA, Bangladesh, March 23 (CDN) — A Christian has been sentenced to one year in prison for ‘creating chaos’ by selling and distributing Christian books and other literature near a major Muslim gathering north of this capital city.

A magistrate court in Gazipur district handed down the sentence to Biplob Marandi, a 25-year-old tribal Christian, on Feb. 28 after he was arrested near the massive Bishwa Ijtema (World Muslim Congregation) on the banks of the Turag River near Tongi town on Jan. 21.

A copy of the verdict says that he was sentenced according to Section 296 of Bangladeshi law 1860 for ‘creating chaos at a religious gathering.’

‘Duty police found Marandi creating chaos as he was propagating his religion, Christianity, by distributing the tracts as a mobile court on Jan. 21 was patrolling near the field of the Bishwa Ijtema,’ the verdict reads. ‘The accusation – creating chaos at a Muslim gathering by distributing Christian booklets and tracts – against him was read out in the court before him, and he admitted it. He also told the court that he had mainly wanted to propagate his religion, Christianity.'”  Read more.
