ACLU Turns Blind Eye To Sharia In America

By Stephen M. Gelé, American Thinker – “Daniel Mach, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s program on Freedom of Religion and Belief, and Jamil Dakwar, director of the ACLU’s Human Rights program, recently co-authored an article on the Huffington Post attacking legislative efforts to prohibit the application of foreign laws inconsistent with the rights granted by the U.S. and state constitutions or state public policy.
The article posits a series of disjointed, hypothetical misapplications of the legislative efforts to prevent sharia from encroaching into our legal system. Yet, the authors cite no actual examples of misapplications of laws already passed and in force, in Tennessee, Louisiana, and Arizona. The authors fail to distinguish this American Laws for American Courts (ALAC) legislation from other legislative efforts, such as the Oklahoma constitutional amendment, which do not explicitly reference the protection of constitutional rights and public policy in prohibiting application of sharia or foreign law.
Further, the authors contend that these laws, explicitly protecting established constitutional rights, are superfluous because the First Amendment already protects these rights, and then allege that these laws violate the religious freedom granted by the First Amendment. The authors thereby dangerously conflate the judiciary’s interpretation and enforcement of secular law with interpretation and enforcement of religious doctrine. The freedom of religion and establishment clauses of the First Amendment do not address the application of foreign law, including sharia, in American courts, and, as demonstrated below, have not been applied to prevent such application.
Additionally, American courts have repeatedly held that freedom of religion does not require the judiciary to void secular laws which may incidentally conflict with religious doctrine, and that the First Amendment prohibits the judiciary from interpreting or enforcing religious doctrine. For example, in the case of S.D. v. M.J.R., the New Jersey Superior Court of Appeal reversed a trial court judge who did not find sexual assault to have been proven when a husband admitted forcing his wife to engage in sex, because the husband lacked criminal intent as he was a Muslim, and sharia, as described by an imam, mandated that a wife submit to her husband’s sexual advances. The New Jersey appellate court cited several U.S. Supreme Court decisions that held that freedom of religion does not include violating criminal laws, including Reynolds v. United States and Cleveland v. United States regarding polygamy, and Employment Div., Dep’t of Human Res. of Oregon v. Smith regarding smoking peyote, even when religious doctrine permits or mandates the prohibited practice. The U.S. Supreme Court, in Presbyterian Church in the United States v. Mary Elizabeth Blue Hull Memorial Presbyterian Church and its progeny, have also consistently held that deciding disputes over religious doctrine violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment.” Read more.
Canadian Prime Minister Refuses to Embrace Obama’s Plan of Israeli-Palestinian Peace Negotiations Based Upon Pre-1967 Borders
Finally, another leader who ‘gets it’ and sticks to his ‘renegade Middle East views’ as far as Israel is concerned. Way to go, Prime Minister Harper. I hope Obama enjoys his Canadian pie …
By Doug Saunders – “It was meant to be, as Barack Obama described it in London with his British counterpart beside him, another unified mission to storm the beaches of Normandy in the name of peace and democracy.
And the Western world’s leaders do plan to use the Deauville, France, G8 summit to present a united front on the conflicts and revolutions of the Middle East. But one of the rare sources of friction has turned out to be the renegade Middle East views of Stephen Harper.
Alone among G8 leaders, the Canadian Prime Minister refuses to embrace the U.S. President’s plan to begin peace negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of a return to Israel’s de facto borders as they existed before its 1967 war with neighbouring Arab countries – a precondition, accepted by Arabs and by many previous Israeli leaders and Canadian governments, that would be necessary to get Palestinians back to the table.
Mr. Harper made his opposition to that position clear through a spokesperson shortly after Mr. Obama’s Middle East speech last week in a pre-G8 briefing, making him the lone leader in the G8 not to back the U.S. preconditions.” Read more.
G8 leaders omit mention of 1967 borders in Middle East statement – “Group of Eight leaders had to soften a statement urging Israel and the Palestinians to return to negotiations because Canada objected to a specific mention of 1967 borders, diplomats said on Friday. Canada’s right-leaning Conservative government has adopted a staunchly pro-Israel position in international negotiations since coming to power in 2006, with Prime Minister Stephen Harper saying Canada will back Israel whatever the cost.” Read more.
The Dangers of Political Correctness: TSA Pats Down Little Old Lady and Kid, But Ignores Muslim Man In Arab Garb
Here is one example where nonsensical political correctness has run amok to the point where those responsible for ‘airport security’ are instead putting lives in danger by trying to not hurt the feelings of Muslims. When the overwhelming majority of all terrorist attacks since 9/11 are perpetrated by Islamists, who should the TSA have been checking here?
Rep. Paul Broun: “I went through the security at an airport. I walked through, there was — right behind me — there was a grandma. Little old lady, and she was patted down. Right behind her was a little kid who was patted down, and then right behind him there was a guy in Arabian dress who just walked right through. Why are we patting down grandma and kids?”
Russian Teen Committed Suicide on Eve of Harold Camping’s Predicted ‘Judgment Day’
“(NewsCore) – A 14-year-old girl Russian girl was so scared by the doomsday predictions of Californian evangelist Harold Camping that she hanged herself, investigators said Wednesday.
Camping warned the world would end last Saturday, predicting that 200 million Christians would be elevated to heaven while the rest of civilization would be wiped out by devastating earthquakes.
He faced ridicule when his predicted ‘Rapture’ failed to materialize, but his apocalyptic prophecy managed to spook his American followers, some of whom quit their jobs and depleted their savings in readiness.
It was also reported Wednesday that a teenager living in the Mari El Republic, central Russia, was so scared by Camping’s claims, she decided to hang herself just hours before his Saturday night deadline.” Read more.
You’re Forged! Trump Declares Obama’s Birth Certificate Fake
“Billionaire businessman Donald Trump, who staged a weeks-long public campaign questioning Barack Obama’s eligibility to be president during March and April – and rose to the top of the pool of potential candidates for the 2012 GOP nomination then as a result – says he believes the ‘birth certificate’ released by the White House is forged.
His comments came yesterday in a telephone call to WND senior reporter Jerome Corsi, Ph.D., who is appearing on wall-to-wall radio programs – between 10 and 20 per day – to respond to questions about his latest best-seller, ‘Where’s the Birth Certificate? The Case That Barack Obama is Not Eligible to be President.’
Trump asked Corsi about the book, its evidence and what is happening next in the effort to document whether Obama is, in fact, constitutionally qualified for the presidency under Article 2, Section 1’s ‘natural born citizen’ requirement.
Trump said his period of almost-complete silence on the issue following the release by the White House on April 27 of the image of a ‘Certificate of Live Birth’ from the state of Hawaii was not because he was satisfied with the document.
‘I always said I wanted to know if it was real,’ Trump told Corsi.
The image has been challenged by a number of experts in the field, and the original, of course, has yet to be seen, much less analyzed.” Read more.
Update: You’re flustered! Trump can’t get his story straight – “WASHINGTON – Donald Trump today issued a written statement to the leftist Mother Jones magazine and other news outlets denying he told Jerome Corsi, author of a new bestselling book about Barack Obama’s constitutional eligibility, he suspected the birth certificate released by the White House is fraudulent… However, Corsi says Trump repeated a conversation he had weeks ago in a conference call with WND Editor and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Farah in which the building magnate said he is concerned about the validity of the document released April 27 by the Obama White House. Farah confirms Trump questioned the authenticity of the birth certificate and said others around him do as well.” Read more.
Update 2: Trump’s back! Casting doubt on birth certificate – “After fanning the flames of doubt that pressured Barack Obama to publicize a purported copy of his official birth certificate, Donald Trump’s latest statements suggest the White House-released document may be a fake. ‘I don’t know exactly what he showed,’ Trump told the Faith & Freedom Coalition annual conference in Washington, D.C., over the weekend, ‘but you know, someday somebody’s gonna figure that one out.'” Read more.

Bruce Thornton: Obama is to the Islamists what Chamberlain was to the Nazis
Obama thinks that doing the same thing over and over will eventually yield a different result. What did Einstein have to say about that kind of behavior?
By Bruce Thornton – “In September 1938 English Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, explaining why he was flying to Germany a third time in order to make peace with Germany, recited the old nursery rhyme: ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.’ Cynical wags in the Foreign Office, who knew Chamberlain was in fact appeasing Hitler by surrendering Czechoslovakia to him, quickly began circulating another version of the saying: ‘If at first you don’t concede, fly, fly, fly again.’
President Obama’s new ‘outreach’ to the Muslim world reminds me of Chamberlain’s serial efforts to appease a Germany bent on aggression and conquest. First there was the Cairo speech in June 2009, which was supposed to be a ‘new beginning’ for U.S. relations with Muslims, but in fact simply indulged the same old bad habits of Western self-doubt and historical guilt. Thus Obama attributed the ‘tension’ between the West and Islam to a ‘colonialism that denied rights and opportunities to many Muslims, and a Cold war in which Muslim-majority countries were too often treated as proxies without regard to their own aspirations.’ Next came the videotaped New Year’s greetings to Iran, and the multiple letters to the Iranian ‘Supreme Leader’ Ali Khamenei requesting ‘co-operation in regional and bilateral relations.’ These outreaches were followed by Khameini’s announcement that ‘the path of Iran’s nuclear progress could not be blocked,’ and by the brutal crackdown that summer on the demonstrators protesting the tyranny of the mullahcracy. Meanwhile Iran continues its support of terrorists murdering our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.” Read more.

Netanyahu to Congress: Jerusalem Must Remain Undivided, Abbas Must Ditch Hamas and Negotiate Peace
By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu – “Israel is the only country that has guaranteed freedom of all faiths in Jerusalem, which must remain undivided, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told Congress Tuesday. In unusually strong language, he told the Congressmen that Judea and Samaria is part of the ancient Jewish homeland and that ‘we are not ‘occupying’ the region.’
Interrupted rerated by standing ovations, he also said that there are 300 million Arabs, but the only ones who are free are Israeli citizens.” Read more.
Israel to Palestinians: ditch Hamas, UN state bid – “Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, outlining his peace vision on Tuesday, urged the Palestinian leadership to shun Islamist group Hamas and shelve efforts to win U.N. statehood status unilaterally. ‘I say to President Abbas ‘Tear up your pact with Hamas and sit down and negotiate, make peace with the Jewish state…'” Read more.
PM: We won’t negotiate with Palestinian version of al-Qaida – “Israel will not, he said, ‘negotiate with a Palestinian government, which is backed by a Palestinian version of al-Qaida,’ he said referring to Hamas after noting that they condemned the US killing of Osama bin Laden. Hamas, he noted, is not a partner for peace. It ‘remains committed to Israel’s destruction and to terrorism. They have a charter, it calls not only for the destruction of Israel, it says: kill the Jews.'” Read more.
Netanyahu Speaks His Mind in Front of the Media with Obama, Gives Obama a Dose of Reality
The Israeli Prime Minister demonstrated today what real leadership looks like …
Reuters “Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu bluntly told President Barack Obama on Friday his vision of how to achieve Middle East peace was unrealistic, exposing a deep divide that could doom any U.S. bid to revive peace talks.
In an unusually sharp rebuke to Israel’s closest ally, Netanyahu insisted Israel would never pull back to its 1967 borders — which would mean big concessions of occupied land — that Obama had said should be the basis for negotiations on creating a Palestinian state.
‘Peace based on illusions will crash eventually on the rocks of Middle East reality,’ an unsmiling Netanyahu said as Obama listened intently beside him in the Oval Office after they met for talks.
Netanyahu insisted that Israel was willing to make compromises for peace, but made clear he had major differences with Washington over how to advance the long-stalled peace process.
Netanyahu’s resistance raises the question of how hard Obama will push for concessions he is unlikely to get, and whether the vision the U.S. leader laid out on Thursday to resolve the decades-old conflict will ever get off the ground.
Despite assurances of friendship by both leaders, this week’s events also appeared to herald tense months ahead for U.S.-Israeli relations, even as the Arab world goes through political tumult and Palestinians prepare a unilateral bid this fall to seek U.N. General Assembly recognition for statehood.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Obama said he reiterated to Netanyahu the peace ‘principles’ he offered on Thursday in a policy speech on the Middle East upheaval.
The goal, he said, ‘has to be a secure Israeli state, a Jewish state, living side by side in peace and security with a contiguous, functioning and effective Palestinian state.
Obama on Thursday embraced a long-sought goal by the Palestinians: that the state they seek in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip should largely be drawn along lines that existed before the 1967 war in which Israel captured those territories and East Jerusalem.
Netanyahu, who heads a right-leaning coalition, responded with what amounted to a history lecture about the vulnerability to attack that Israel faced with the old borders. ‘We can’t go back to those indefensible lines,’ he said.” Read more.
Network That Once Refused to Air ‘Support the Troops’ Ad, Currently Running Ads from Group with Terror Links
By Rusty Weiss – “In December of 2007, a conservative organization known as Freedom Watch created an advertisement with a message of support and thanks to America’s troops serving around the world. They were rejected by NBC.
In April of this year, a Muslim organization known as the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) created an advertisement with a message to counter Islamophobia from the ‘conservative right’. They are currently running on NBC Universal media networks.
The alleged difference?
NBC claimed their reason for rejecting the Freedom Watch ad was because ‘the group insisted that the spot contain the URL address of its Web site.’ However, the new ICNA ads clearly contain the groups WhyIslam.org website.
The real difference?
Freedom Watch is an organization that supports the war on terrorism. The ICNA simply supports terrorism.” Read more.
Standing in the Holy Place: Interfaith Service at St. John’s Parish in Montclair, Not So Holy Anymore
Lest we forget the church in Thyatira…
Revelation 2:18-22, “To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first. Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways.”
BY Megan Schaefer – “This Sunday morning, May 22, at 10 a.m., the sounds of the adhan — the Muslim call to prayer — will ring out in St. John’s Episcopal Church Montclair.
While there’s no minaret
at the church, the words of ‘Allahu akbar,’ (God is greater) will none-the-less invite both Christians and Muslims to worship side by side. During the interfaith service, verses from the Holy Qur’an will complement readings from the Holy Bible, including during Communion, embracing the traditions of both religions.” Read more.
Judgment Day: False Teacher Harold Camping Predicts Saturday ‘Rapture’ on May 21, 2011; ‘Millions of People will Die’
False teacher Harold Camping — who is predicting that the ‘rapture‘ will happen on May 21, 2011 and that millions of people will die — has a track record of being 100% wrong 100% of the time, and come ‘Judgment Day’ on Saturday 5/21/2011 he will certainly retain that abysmal track record, both on paper and in the court of public opinion. Though his prediction will prove to be false yet again, it will serve nothing but to damage Christianity in the minds of millions by handing fodder to late night comics, water cooler loiterers, and your average everyday scoffer.
Not only is Harold Camping’s ‘math’ off, so is his spelling. Here’s my prediction: There will not be a world-wide rapture on May 21, 2011 where millions of people will die, but rather a world-wide rupture where millions of people will die … laughing. For some of those who believed him, it will be their faith that is terminated, not millions of people around the world. And for a small number of others who have been deceived — some of whom have quit their jobs and sold all of their possessions — there is a serious risk that some will be so disillusioned that Mr. Camping may end up with blood on his hands.
To those who may have fallen for Camping’s shenanigans, I say this to you: Do not lose heart, do not lose hope. Spit out the bones that you have been given, but keep the meat and hold fast to that which is good. The lies of Harold Camping were anything but.
Update 5/22/2011: ‘Rapture’: Believers perplexed after prediction fail – “Followers of an evangelical broadcaster who declared that Saturday would be Judgement Day are trying to make sense of the failed prediction… the evangelist at the centre of the claim, Harold Camping, has not been seen since before the deadline.
… The Washington Post reported that suicide prevention hotlines were set up in case believers fell into depression after the apocalypse failed to happen.
A group from the Calvary Bible Church in Milpitas, California, organised a Sunday morning service to comfort believers in Mr Camping’s preaching, the New York Times reported.
‘We are here because we care about these people,’ the newspaper quoted James Bynum, a church deacon, as saying. ‘It’s easy to mock them. But you can go kick puppies, too. But why?
…US atheists held parties to celebrate the failed prediction, while a group of non-believers gathered outside Mr Camping’s Family Radio International headquarters in Oakland, California, as the deadline passed.
‘It was probably one of the saddest things that I’d ever read, the idea that there’s kids out there whose parents spent their college savings funds, who sold their homes,’ one woman told the BBC.'” Read more.
NY Mag, May 11 -“We’ve followed with interest the Christian movement that believes Judgment Day will occur on May 21 — ten days from now. They’ve put up billboards, they’ve handed out fliers. Some of them have even burned through all of their savings, so convinced are they that the world is going to end on May 21 and they’ll no longer need it. That’s the most incredible part of this bizarre story — that these people are so sure about something so incredibly unlikely. How can that be? To find out, we went right to the source: Harold Camping, the gravely voiced, 89-year-old founder of Family Radio; the man who pinpointed May 21 as the exact date of the Rapture based on clues sprinkled throughout the Bible. He is very confident in his prediction.
‘God has given sooo much information in the Bible about this, and so many proofs, and so many signs, that we know it is absolutely going to happen without any question at all. There’s nothing in the Bible that God has ever prophesied — there’s many things that he prophesied would happen and they always have happened — but there’s nothing in the Bible that holds a candle to the amount of information to this tremendous truth of the end of the world. I would be absolutely in rebellion against God if I thought anything other than it is absolutely going to happen without any question.'” Read more.
