Agenzia Fides – “Mariam was a 15-year-old Christian from Qusair, a city of the governorate in Homs, 35 km south of the capital. The city, which had become a stronghold of the Syrian rebels, was reconquered by the troops of the regular army at the beginning of June. Mariam’s story – sent to Fides thanks to the report of two Catholic priests – is a sign of the brutality of the conflict and the extreme vulnerability of religious minorities. Mariam’s family was in town when militants linked to the jihadist group ‘Jabhat al-Nusra’ conquered and occupied it.

While her family was able to escape, Mariam was taken and forced into an Islamic marriage.

Fides sources point out that, through social networks, the fatwa was widespread in Syria produced by Yasir al-Ajlawni – A Salafi sheikh of Jordanian origin, resident in Damascus – who declared lawful, for opponents of the regime of Bashar al-Assad, rape committed against ‘any non-Sunni Syrian woman.’ According to the fatwa to capture and rape Alawi or Christian women is not contrary to the precepts of Islam.

The commander of the battalion ‘Jabhat al-Nusra’ in Qusair took Mariam, married and raped her. Then he repudiated her. The next day the young woman was forced to marry another Islamic militant. He also raped her and then repudiated her. The same trend was repeated for 15 days, and Mariam was raped by 15 different men. This psychologically destabilized her and made her insane. Mariam, became mentally unstable and was eventually killed.

‘These atrocities are not told by any International Commission’ say to Fides two Greek-Catholic priests, Fr. Issam and Fr. Elias who have just returned to town. The two are collecting the cry’s and complaints of many families. ‘Who will do something to protect civilians, the most vulnerable?’ they ask. As reported to Fides, the two have just celebrated a Mass to consecrate again the Catholic church of St. Elias in Qusair.

The church was ransacked and desecrated by the guerrillas, and had become a logistic and residential base for rebel groups.” Source – Agenzia Fides.

By Abigail Hauslohner, William Booth and Sharaf al-Hourani, The Washington Post – “CAIRO — The Egyptian military removed President Mohamed Morsi from power Wednesday and suspended the constitution in moves it said were aimed at resolving the country’s debilitating political crisis.

In a televised address to the nation after a meeting with a group of civilian political and religious leaders, the head of the powerful armed forces, Gen. Abdel Fatah al-Sissi, said the chief of Egypt’s constitutional court ‘will assume the presidency’ on an interim basis until a new presidential election is held. Sissi said the interim president will have the right to declare laws during the transitional period.

The announcement came as huge crowds of pro- and anti-government protesters massed in the streets of Cairo and the army deployed armored vehicles. In the afternoon, a top adviser to embattled Morsi had declared that a military coup was underway and warned that ‘considerable bloodshed’ could ensue.

Up until the announcement, the Egyptian military had denied that it was staging it a coup. According to the official Middle East News Agency, top commanders were backing Muslim and Christian religious leaders, youth representatives and the head of a liberal opposition alliance in jointly presenting a ‘roadmap’ for a political transition.

The plan is the result of an emergency meeting between military and civilian leaders, including top Muslim and Coptic Christian clerics and opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei, the state-run news agency reported.

Without mentioning Morsi by name in a heavily anticipated eight-minute speech at 9 p.m. Wednesday night, Sissi said the military had responded to the people’s demands in an act of ‘public service.’

‘The armed forces have tried in recent months, both directly and indirectly, to contain the internal situation and to foster national reconciliation between the political powers, including the presidency,’ Sissi said. But those efforts had failed, he said. The president, he added, ‘responded with negativity in the final minutes.’

In a meeting with ‘religious, political and youth symbols,’ the military accepted a ‘roadmap that will achieve a strong Egyptian society that does not alienate any of its children or strains, and ends this division,’ Sissi said.

The announcement sparked cheers and celebration among Morsi opponents packed into Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

But in eastern Cairo, supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood, an entrenched Islamist movement that backs Morsi, erupted in angry chants following Sissi’s speech, and stones started flying.” Read more.

By Richard Engel, Charlene Gubash and Erin McClam, NBC News – “CAIRO — An adviser to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi said Wednesday that a military coup was underway, that tanks were on the move outside Cairo and that communication with the president had been cut off.

As a military deadline came and went for Morsi to step aside, the army took control of state television, and boisterous crowds opposed to the regime cheered and danced in Tahrir Square.

Representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood, which supports Morsi, also said that some of its leaders had been rounded up and arrested.

Earlier in the day, both the president and the military had sworn a fight to the death. The military leader, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, said it would be an honor to die rather than subject the Egyptian people to threats or terror.

In something of a call to arms, the military posted on Facebook: ‘We swear to God to sacrifice with our blood for Egypt and its people against any terrorist, extremist or ignoramus. Long live Egypt and its proud people.'” Read more.

Egypt’s Military Moves Tanks Near Palace; Morsi Aide Sees Coup – “With a potentially violent showdown looming between Egypt’s military and the Islamist backers of President Mohamed Morsi, the country’s top generals summoned civilian political leaders to an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss a new interim government while moving tanks toward the presidential palace and restricting Mr. Morsi’s travel — new signals of an impending military takeover. A top presidential adviser said a coup already was under way.  The developments came as street tensions intensified and a 48-hour deadline imposed by the military generals on the increasingly isolated president to meet the demands of millions of unhappy Egyptians came and went.  By 6:30 p.m. military forces began moving around Cairo. Tanks and troops headed for the presidential palace — although it was unclear whether Mr. Morsi was inside — while other soldiers ringed the nearby square where tens of thousands of the president’s supporters were rallying.” Read more.

Al Hayat TV: President Morsi Under ‘House Arrest’ – “Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi is reportedly under house arrest after the military ultimatum expired Wednesday, reports Al Hayat TV. Morsi’s spokesman denied the report, according to ABC News, but word of the house arrest provoked cheers in Tahrir Square. This comes as Egypt’s military moved to tighten its control on key institutions before their afternoon ultimatum expired. The military stationed officers in the newsroom of state television on the banks of the Nile River in central Cairo. Troops were deployed in news-production areas.” Read more.

If the military decides to move against the Muslim Brotherhood’s Islamist President, an Islamist-vs-Opposition civil war may indeed be inevitable. By HAMZA HENDAWI and SARAH EL DEEB, The Times of Israel – “CAIRO (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of Egpyitan protesters massed for a second day on Monday calling on Mohammed Morsi to step down. Meanwhile, Egypt’s powerful military warned it will intervene if the Islamist president doesn’t ‘meet the people’s demands,’ giving him and his opponents two days to reach an agreement in what it called a last chance.

Military helicopters, some dangling Egyptian flags, swooped over Cairo’s Tahrir Square where many broke into cheers with the army’s announcement, read on state television. The statement seemed to fuel the flow of crowds into city squares around the country where protesters chanted and sang.

‘Come out, el-Sissi. The people want to topple the regime,’ protesters in the Nile Delta city of Mahalla el-Kubra chanted, urging military chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to intervene.

The military’s statement puts enormous pressure on Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood. So far, the president has vowed he will remain in his position, but the opposition and crowds in the street — who numbered in the millions nationwide on Sunday — have made clear they will accept nothing less than his departure and a transition to early presidential elections.

That makes action by the generals when the deadline runs out nearly inevitable, since a deal seems unlikely. The statement did not define the ‘people’s demands’ that must be met. But it strongly suggested that Sunday’s gigantic rallies expressed the desire of Egyptians, raising the likelihood it would insist on Morsi’s departure.

An army move against Morsi, however, risks a backlash from his Islamist supporters, who include hard-line former militants.” Read more.
