5 Million Aquatic Animals Die at Mara River in Kenya

03/09/2011 Leave a comment

“The National Environmental Management Authority (Nema), Public Health Ministry and Kenya Wildlife Service are investigating the deaths of fish in Mara River. Conservationists suspect the deaths that started last week might have been caused by agro chemicals from farms, that drain into the river. Hoteliers in Masai Mara Game Reserve are now expressing fear that the chemicals might kill animals that depend on the river.

‘The deaths could have been caused by agro chemicals from large scale farms on the upper side of the river. The chemicals might also kill hippos, crocodiles and other animals that drink water from the river,’ said Ben Kipeno, a conservationist from the northern side of the reserve. Mr Kipeno said on Wednesday there were unconfirmed reports that apart from fish, a crocodile and a hippo have already succumbed to effects of the chemicals.”  Read more.

“There is a mystery over dead birds found in and around a private park in Manhattan.

In Gramercy Park, you expect to see pigeons, not zebra finches, and never like the ones Eyewitness News saw Tuesday afternoon dead.

‘Every time I see a dead bird, I feel terrible,’ said Joanie Watkins, a Gramercy Park resident.

It’s the mystery hanging over this normally quiet enclave; how did these birds, that are native to Australia, end up here?

‘I was really upset Sunday night,’ said Lisa Anastasi, a Gramercy Park resident.

Anastasi is one of many who spotted the birds Sunday, in and around the park, dozens of them that were dead, near death, or completely in a daze.”  Read more.

“Seals are washing up on New Jersey beaches by the dozen, according to reports given to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, N.J.

There have been 26 seal strandings in New Jersey since November, sources say. Fourteen of those strandings happened in February.

While it is not unusual for seals to get stranded this time of year, there are more than usual showing up on Jersey shore beaches, according to a spokeswoman for the Brigantine center.

The gray and harbor seals found on the beaches are malnourished and have parasites, authorities say. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is housing 11 seals right now — making the center two-thirds full.”  Read more.

The injured people are being treated at nearby Ranishonkoil sub-district health complex.

Amazon Deforestation Up 1000% From Last Year

“Over the last several years, the rate of forest loss in the Brazilian Amazon had been in steady decline, but the latest data is yet again proving that the problem is far from over. According to figures released today, deforestation in the world’s largest rainforest has increased nearly 1,000 percent from the same period the year before, marking the first rise in over two years — though only time will tell if it is merely a disappointing uptick, or a troubling reverse of trends.

A newly disclosed report from the Amazon Institute of People and the Environment (IMAZON) reveals that 175 square kilometers (68 mi²) of forest were cleared this past December, compared with just 16 km² (6 mi²) reported last year for December 2009, a rise of 994 percent.”  Read more.

South Korea Confirms Additional Bird Flu Outbreak

03/08/2011 Leave a comment

“South Korea confirmed an additional bird flu case at a duck farm in the central part of the country on Saturday.

Tests showed that the 12,400 birds at a poultry farm in Cheonan, 92 kilometers south of Seoul, were infected with the virulent H5N1 strain of the avian influenza (AI), the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) said.

This is the second case of the highly pathogenic avian influenza reported in the country this month as the number of AI cases has started to fall off in recent weeks. It is also the first AI confirmation in Cheonan in 33 days.

All ducks on the farm will be culled with quarantine authorities asking nearby farms to be vigilant on protecting their birds.”  Read more.

“At the end of the day I can’t see how we get to this Christmas with anything that resembles the status quo … when the dollar collapses our way of life is going to change and at that moment, when that happens, there will only be one question that will matter – and that question is are you ready?”

125 Quakes in 24 hrs, Hawaii Volcano Throws Lave 65ft Into the Air as New Vent Opens

03/07/2011 Leave a comment

“A new vent has opened on one of the world’s most active volcanos, sending lava shooting 65ft into the air.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the fissure eruption on Kilauea was spotted after the floor of the Pu’u O’o crater collapsed.

It occurred along the middle of Kilauea’s east rift zone, around two miles west of Pu’u O’o.

Volcanologist Janet Babb said: ‘This is what we do. These are the moments we wait for.

‘It is exciting to see an eruption begin particularly if you can see it from the very start.’

Kilauea has been in constant eruption since January 3, 1983.

At the summit, lava receded rapidly after the eruption at around 5pm local time on Saturday, but seemed to have slowed yesterday.

There were also around 150 small earthquakes recorded within Kilauea in the last 24 hours.”  Read more.

Christchurch Earthquake: 10,000 Homes Face Demolition

“About 10,000 houses in Christchurch will have to be demolished because of damage from last month’s earthquake and parts of the city will have to be abandoned altogether, New Zealand’s prime minister has said.

The magnitude 6.3 quake hit close to the surface within three miles (5km) of central Christchurch on 22 February. It shattered homes, heritage buildings and office blocks, and caused 166 confirmed deaths. Officials say the toll is expected to rise to more than 200 as rescuers continue to search for bodies trapped in the rubble.

Earthquakes can cause sections of earth to liquefy and push up to the surface as watery silt. In Christchurch, 260,000 tonnes of silt have already been scraped away.

‘There are some parts of Christchurch that can’t be rebuilt on,’ the prime minister, John Key, told reporters. ‘The liquefaction damage from the … earthquake is so great and the land damage … is so significant we can’t remediate it.'”  Read more.
