Oklahoma Sees Driest 4 Months Since Dust Bowl

04/06/2011 Leave a comment

“COYLE, Okla. (AP) — In most years, the dark clouds over western Oklahoma in the spring would be bringing rain. This year, they’re more likely to be smoke from wildfires that have burned thousands of acres in the past month as the state and its farmers struggle with a severe drought.

Oklahoma was drier in the four months following Thanksgiving than it has been in any similar period since 1921. That’s saying a lot in the state known for the 1930s Dust Bowl, when drought and high winds generated severe dust storms that stripped the land of its topsoil.

Neighboring states are in similar shape as the drought stretches from the Louisiana Gulf coast to Colorado, and conditions are getting worse, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The area in Texas covered by an extreme drought has tripled in the past month to 40 percent, and in Oklahoma it nearly doubled in one week to 16 percent, according to the monitor’s March 29 update.”  Read more.

New Solar Cycle Is Far More Active, Will Keep Ramping Up Until 2013

By Lisa Grossman – “Side-by-side views of the sun two years ago and the sun now show what a difference a solar cycle makes.

The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory’s view of the sun in 2009 (left), toward the end of an extended solar minimum, captures a dull and passive sun. The green coloration (added to make the extreme ultraviolet light visible to human eyes) makes the sun look almost cool enough to touch.

The Solar Dynamics Observatory caught a contrasting view March 27 and 28 in similar wavelengths of ultraviolet light. The sun now displays several active regions that flicker and glow as the star slowly spins.”  Read more.

Al Qaeda Making a Comeback in Afghanistan

04/06/2011 Leave a comment

By MATTHEW ROSENBERG And JULIAN E. BARNES – “In late September, U.S. fighter jets streaked over the cedar-studded slopes of Korengal, the so-called Valley of Death, to strike a target that hadn’t been seen for years in Afghanistan: an al Qaeda training camp.

Among the dozens of Arabs killed that day, the U.S.-led coalition said, were two senior al Qaeda members, one Saudi and the other Kuwaiti. Another casualty of the bombing, according to Saudi media and jihadi websites, was one of Saudi Arabia’s most wanted militants. The men had come to Afghanistan to impart their skills to a new generation of Afghan and foreign fighters.

Even though the strike was successful, the very fact that it had to be carried out represents a troubling shift in the war. Nine years after a U.S.-led invasion routed almost all of al Qaeda’s surviving militants in Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden’s network is gradually returning.”  Read more.

Reactor 2 May Have Melted Through Reactor Pressure Vessel, Tons of Radioactive Waste Flowing Into Ocean Hourly

By Roberta Rampton and Ayesha Rascoe – “WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A top official from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said on Wednesday it was not clear that Japan’s Fukushima No. 2 nuclear reactor has melted through the reactor pressure vessel.

Earlier, Democratic lawmaker Edward Markey told a House of Representatives hearing on the nuclear disaster that the NRC had told him the core had melted through the vessel.”  Read more.

RT: In Japan officials estimate that seven tons of radioactive waste is flowing into the ocean every hour at the crippled Daiichi nuclear facility.  The source of the leaking waste appears to be reactor 2.  Attempts to clog the leak with cement have failed and new attempts to plug the hole with a junk shot of sawdust, chemicals and shredded newspaper don’t appear to be working either.  Officials have now put a time frame on containing the situation, saying it could be several months for the plant’s cooling systems to come back online and for the radiation to be contained.  Of course, that would be just the first step.  It would then take hundreds of thousands of years for this mess caused by the use of nuclear power to decay to safety.

‘Radiation Levels Are So High That Monitoring Devices Have Been Rendered Useless’

04/06/2011 Leave a comment

“A radiation monitor at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says workers there are exposed to immeasurable levels of radiation.

The monitor told NHK that no one can enter the plant’s No. 1 through 3 reactor buildings because radiation levels are so high that monitoring devices have been rendered useless. He said even levels outside the buildings exceed 100 millisieverts in some places.

Pools and streams of water contaminated by high-level radiation are being found throughout the facility.

The monitor said he takes measurements as soon as he finds water, because he can’t determine whether it’s contaminated just by looking at it. He said he’s very worried about the safety of workers there.”  Read more.

Revelation 13: A Commentary

Many Christians today can be eschatologically myopic.  This is particularly true for many of us who live comfortably in the West, working comfortable jobs and making enough money to enjoy a fairly comfortable living while Christians in other parts of the world, especially the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Asia where Islam is the dominant religion, live under the constant threat of persecution and even death simply because of the very fact that they are Christian.  According to the World Evangelical Alliance, over 200 million Christians in at least 60 countries are denied fundamental human rights solely because of their faith. David B. Barrett, Todd M. Johnson, and Peter F. Crossing in their 2009 report in the International Bulletin of Missionary Research (Vol. 33, No. 1: 32) estimate that approximately 176,000 Christians were martyred between mid-2008 to mid-2009.  This, according to the authors, compares to 160,000 martyrs in mid-2000 and 34,400 at the beginning of the 20th century [1].  And it’s getting worse.

I believe that we are in the last of the last days and are being plunged into a time that Christ described as “great tribulation” in Matthew 24.  I do not believe, however, in a seven-year-tribulation nor do I believe that we, at any imminent moment, will be whisked away in a secret rapture to avoid any and all persecution that may be coming to our shores, as much as I would love for that to be the case (read here to find out where Paul and John place the rapture of the Church in Scripture, and here to find out what the Church is according to Jesus).

As the end of the age approaches, the picture of radical Islam and its role in the Last Days is becoming increasingly clear (cf. Daniel 12:4), and just as our Christian brothers and sisters on the other side of the world are today being persecuted, imprisoned, tortured, shot, blown up and beheaded for the faith of Jesus, I believe that we, too, will continue to witness all that is taking place. As such, I hereby present to you a commentary on Revelation 13 for your consideration that I believe reveals to us the time in which we are now living today, and the time that will soon be upon us.

U.S. Sees Array of New Threats at Japan’s Nuclear Plant

04/05/2011 Leave a comment

By JAMES GLANZ and WILLIAM J. BROAD – “United States government engineers sent to help with the crisis in Japan are warning that the troubled nuclear plant there is facing a wide array of fresh threats that could persist indefinitely, and that in some cases are expected to increase as a result of the very measures being taken to keep the plant stable, according to a confidential assessment prepared by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Among the new threats that were cited in the assessment, dated March 26, are the mounting stresses placed on the containment structures as they fill with radioactive cooling water, making them more vulnerable to rupture in one of the aftershocks rattling the site after the earthquake and tsunami of March 11. The document also cites the possibility of explosions inside the containment structures due to the release of hydrogen and oxygen from seawater pumped into the reactors, and offers new details on how semimolten fuel rods and salt buildup are impeding the flow of fresh water meant to cool the nuclear cores.”  Read more.

By Dan Wooding – “FAISALABAD, PAKISTAN (ANS) — A leading human rights campaigner in Pakistan has urged the government to provide ‘full-fledged security’ for Mr. Joseph Francis, Director of CLAAS (Center for Legal Aid Assistance and Settlement), after Francis has received death threats for his work on the repeal of the country’s controversial blashemphy laws.

Naveed Walter, President of Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP), told the ASSIST News Service that he is concerned for the safety of Mr. Francis, and other Christian leaders, who are also receiving disturbing threats…

‘We also strongly condemn the death threats to Christian leaders and we are not afraid. I have also got threats from unknown people during the campaign for the total repeal of blasphemy laws and now, during the recent demonstrations following the assassination of Mr. Shahbaz Bhatti.

‘We are committed, at any cost, to continue our peaceful struggle until religious freedom prevails in Pakistan.'” Read more.

Pakistan: Christian Man Goes Into Hiding After Told by Islamists to ‘Convert or Die’

“‘Convert or die’.  Masih Gill, a Christian from the city of Mardan, in the province of ‘Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’ (Northern Pakistan), was threatened with these words by a group of Muslims with whom he had been speaking, after the recent episode of the burning of the Koran in the US.

This event caused violent reactions in Pakistan (three churches attacked in a week) by Muslim extremists. Nearly one dozen UN guards were killed on April 1, while two were beheaded. Local sources say that Masih Gill simply defended his faith, saying that Christians respect all religions and do not nurture hostility towards anyone. The Muslims then threatened Gill. They also said that they would charge him before Pakistani authorities with blasphemy.”  Read more.

Highly Contagious AIDS-Like Disease Spreading in China

By Chen Yilian – “In a small hotel across from the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a reporter from New Express Daily, dressed in an isolation suit, interviewed a dozen ‘unusual’ patients from different areas of China. Their symptoms are painful and debilitating, and AIDS-like, but repeated tests for HIV have come up negative.

Lin Jun, one of the patients interviewed in the March 24 New Express Daily report, said he used to be chubby, but now he is skin and bones, and his joints have become all deformed.”  Read more.

‘Hamas Weapons Capability Increased Four-Fold Over Last Five Years’

04/05/2011 Leave a comment

By Amos Harel – “… The details released Monday indicate that Hamas has a well-developed missile industry.

In the past five years, the range of Qassam rockets apparently increased, with Abu Sisi’s alleged help, from six to 22 kilometers, though reported attempts to increase the range to 40 kilometers failed. The anti-tank missiles armor penetration capability increased from six to 26 centimeters.

According to the court indictment, Abu Sisi was also developing a mortar shell that could penetrate meter-thick armor and damage even a Merkava tank. It also says Hamas inquired about buying Russian-made anti-aircraft missiles and smuggling missiles that could strike at Israeli navy ships.” Read more.
