New Zealand: Up To 800 Birds Found Dead at Wetlands in Eastern Suburbs of Christchurch, Avian Botulism Suspected

02/09/2012 Leave a comment

“Up to 800 birds have been found dead at wetlands in Christchurch’s eastern suburbs and the oxidation ponds.

The Christchurch City Council said yesterday that during the past few weeks dead birds have been found on the banks of the oxidation ponds in Bromley.

Dead birds have also been found in the Bexley area and the Travis Wetland.

Council ornithologist Andrew Crossland said between 600 and 800 dead birds had been found.

‘The earthquakes in Christchurch have caused a lot of changes to water quality but also to effluent levels at the oxidation ponds,’ he said.

‘It’s got nothing to do with anything physical such as liquefaction but more to do with the fluctuating water levels and changes like that.’

Investigations were underway but the initial diagnosis was avian botulism, a paralysing disease caused by a toxin which thrives in shallow, warm water.” Source – The Press.

Report: Assad Forces In Southern Part of Syrian Golan Heights Move Closer to Israel, Mulls Use of Chemical Weapons in Homs

02/09/2012 2 comments

By Gil Ronen – “According to reports from the Free Syria Army, the Syrian military has moved forces stationed in the southern part of the Syrian Golan Heights closer to Israel.

The Syrian military did not come close to the border with Israel. However, armored forces that were stationed along the Syria-Jordan border, which were recently reinforced, were moved closer to Israel, according to the report.

The Free Syria Army is the largest opposition group in Syria and is partly made up of defectors from the official Syrian Army.

Israel is concerned that Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad, whose regime is on the verge of collapse, may try to defuse the uprising against him by starting a conflict with Israel.

A Lebanese newspaper, The People’s Army, claimed Thursday in its news website that the IDF has been making an extra effort in the past few days to place landmines all along its border with Syria.” Read more.

Flashback: Expert: A Threatened Assad May Attack Israel – “Middle East expert Professor Eyal Zisser warned on Monday against a possible Syrian attack on Israel, if President Bashar Assad feels threatened by the anti-regime protesters. In an interview with Arutz Sheva, Zisser said that in the short term there is no reason for particular concern, because a situation which is bad for Assad is good for Israel as this means that the Syrian president is preoccupied with his internal affairs and not with attacking Israel.” Read more.

Assad forces mull use of chemical weapons in Homs, opposition says – “Syria’s military has begun stockpiling chemical weapons and equipping its soldiers with gas masks near the city of Homs, opposition sources reported on Thursday. Opposition activists said they had received reports that the Syrian army had transferred a significant quantity of grenades and mortars containing chemical agents to a school building in Homs. The opposition also reported that gas masks were being distributed to soldiers at roadblocks.” Read more.

Israeli Defense Minister Fears Arms Transfer to Hizbullah – “Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned Thursday that sophisticated weapons could be transferred from Syria to Lebanon and to the Hizbullah terror organization, should Bashar al-Assad fall. ‘You have to be alert to the possibility, so that during the fall of the regime there will not be the transfer of sophisticated Syrian weapons to Hizbullah and Lebanon,’ Barak told Army radio. ‘We are tracking this issue constantly and carefully,’ he said, without elaborating further. Barak said Israeli assessments suggest Assad’s downfall is only a matter of time, ‘The fate of the regime of Bashar al-Assad is sealed; his situation is getting worse every week.'” Read more.

Australia: NSW Farmers Could Lose At Least $750 Million From Devasting Floods

02/09/2012 Leave a comment

By Adam Bennett – “The agricultural industry is expected to suffer losses of at least $750 million as a result of the devastating NSW floods, with tens of thousands of livestock at risk.

As floodwaters from Queensland and northern NSW slowly flow towards western NSW townships such as Walgett and Bourke, farmers are already counting the cost of flooding around Moree and in the Brewarrina district.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Flood Incident Controller, Simon Oliver, said up 10,000 sheep had most likely been lost to the floodwaters, while extensive damage to crops, pastures and infrastructure was also being recorded.

A further 100,000 livestock in areas downstream were also at risk, and the DPI was now working to help farmers relocate animals to higher ground.

‘There is a conservative figure being thrown around from a preliminary estimate of $750 million, that includes all impacts on primary industries like damage to infrastructure, the cotton fields and roads, buildings and fodder storages, estimated stock losses, pasture losses and crop losses,’ Mr Oliver told AAP.

‘Obviously those figures are going to change significantly as we can get a better idea as the water clears.'” Read more.

Peru: Over 200 Dolphins Found Dead Along 106 Kilometer Stretch of Lambayeque Beaches

02/09/2012 Leave a comment

By Manuel Vigo – “This week more than 200 dolphins were found dead along a 106-kilometer stretch at the beaches of Lambayeque.

Authorities have not yet been able to determine the cause of the deaths.

According to El Comercio, Edward Barriga, head of Peru’s Ocean Institute (Imarpe) in Lambayeque, ordered samples be sent to Lima, for further analysis.

‘Soon we will announce the root causes,’ Barriga said.

Barriga said he had also found considerable quantities of dead anchovies on the beaches between the district of San jose and Palo Parado, in Morrope.

Jorge Torres Cabrejos, head of the Lambayeque’s Association of Maritime Growers, said the dolphins might have eaten the dead anchovies, who had died from decomposing plankton, caused by heavy pollution.

According to El Comercio, Torres denied that local fisherman were to blame for the dolphins’ deaths.

Last month Imarpe investigated the death of several dolphins and sea lions in the beaches of Piura.

Local media said the deaths could have been the result of oil spills in the area.” Source – Peru This Week.

Egypt: Muslim Council Evicts 8 Christian Families, Properties Seized, Mobs Torch Three Homes

02/09/2012 Leave a comment

“(AINA) — National and international rights groups have consistently criticized the recourse to the so-called ‘reconciliation meetings’ — dubbed ‘Bedouin sittings’ — that take place between Copts and Muslim assailant after every attack on Copts. The meetings are conducted under the auspices of state security. Last week a series of meetings were held by radical Muslims to decide on the fate of the Copts in a village in Alexandria, and Muslims insisted that the whole Coptic population of 62 families must be deported because of an unsubstantiated accusation levied against one Coptic man.

Copts in the village of Kobry-el-Sharbat (El-Ameriya), Alexandria, were attacked on January 27 by a mob of 3000 Muslims led by Salafi leaders, who looted and torched homes and shops belonging to Copts. The violence was prompted by allegations made by a Muslim barber named Toemah that a 34-year-old Coptic tailor, Mourad Samy Guirgis, had on his mobile phone illicit photos of a Muslim woman. Mourad denied the accusation and surrendered to the police for fear for his life. Muslims looted and torched his workshop and home after he surrendered to the police, and his entire family, including his parents and his married brother Romany, were evicted from the village. He is still in police detention. (AINA 1-28-2012).

Three ‘reconciliation meetings’ were held at the El-Ameriya village police headquarters. They were attended by Salafi and Muslim Brotherhood representatives from neighboring villages, as well as church representative. Muslims demanded the eviction of all Coptic inhabitants from the village because ‘Muslim honour had been damaged.’

Many believe that the mobile phone story was fabricated as an excuse to start violence against the Copts. According to the police, the woman in question denied the story and no photos were found on Mourad’s mobile phone, according to Ihab Aziz, a Coptic-American activist who is presently in Egypt.

During the first reconciliation meeting it was agreed that only Copts who were directly involved with the Mourad incident would be evicted, and the church demanded compensation of two million pounds for the innocent Copts whose homes and businesses were torched on January 27. Muslims, especially Salafis from the neighboring villages, refused any kind of compensation and insisted on the eviction of all Copts.

On January 30 a Muslim mob attacked Copts in Kobry-el-Sharbat for the second time, and torched three Coptic homes in the presence of the security forces, ‘which took the role of an onlooker and made no effort to stop the violence,’ according to Joseph Malak, lawyer for the Coptic church in Alexandria. ‘This proves that the assailants were not afraid of the security forces or the law.’

Muslim representatives demanded the eviction of the wealthy Coptic merchant Abeskhayroun Soliman, together with his four married sons and their families, accusing them of causing sedition by shooting in the air when Muslims broke into and torched their home while the family was inside. ‘No one was wounded due to the alleged shootings, which the family says never took place. The police authorities issued an arrest warrant for two of the Soliman sons,’ said Ihab Aziz.” Read more.

‘Mow Down the Enemies of Allah’: Converts to Islam Arriving in UK with Terrorist Materials Arrested, Will Be Back on Streets Within Two Months

Caution Mr. Vigilance: Political Correctness can be slippery when wet …

By Paul Cheston – “Two Muslim converts who were caught entering Britain with Al Qaeda magazines containing instructions on how to produce homemade bombs will be back on the streets within two months.

German-born Christian Emde, 28, and Robert Baum, 24, were sentenced today at the Old Bailey after being stopped by officers from the South East Counter Terrorism Unit at Dover.

Emde had four copies of Inspire featuring articles titled ‘Make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom’ and ‘Destroying Buildings.’

Another called ‘The ultimate mowing machine’ suggested adding blades to a four-wheel drive pickup truck in order to drive through pedestrian areas and ‘mow down the enemies of Allah.’

On Baum’s computer detectives found a German translation of ’39 ways to serve and participate in Jihad’ which gave advice on how terrorists should keep fit.

Both men lived in the town of Solingen, east of Dusseldorf in Germany, before travelling by ferry to England last July with nearly 3,000 Euros in cash.

Baum, who was living on unemployment benefit, converted to Islam in 2003 while Emde, a former solider in the German army, became a Muslim in 2009 and worked as a warehouseman.

They told officers they had intended to travel to Egypt but changed their plans because it was too expensive. Instead they decided to take a bus from Brussels to London before getting another bus to Birmingham.

The Old Bailey heard the tickets to Birmingham had been bought by an associate of a man named Ahmed Diini, who had been excluded from the UK because of links to terrorism.

Emde claimed that he downloaded the Inspire magazine from the internet so he could ‘understand all aspects of the religion of Islam,’ the court heard.” Read more.

Baylor University Medical Center Surgeon Says Human Body Did Not Evolve

02/08/2012 4 comments

By Brian Thomas, M.S. – “In a recent paper titled ‘Dissecting Darwinism,’ Baylor University Medical Center surgeon Joseph Kuhn described serious problems with Darwinian evolution.1 He first described how life could not possibly have come from chemicals alone, since the information residing in DNA required an input from outside of nature.2

He then addressed Darwinism’s inability to account for the all-or-nothing structure of cellular systems, including the human body. As a medical doctor, Kuhn not only knows the general arrangement of the human body’s visible parts, he also understands the interrelated biochemical systems that sustain and regulate all of those parts. He recognized that the human body contains an all-or-nothing system in which its core parts and biochemicals must exist all at once for the body to function.

Biochemist Michael Behe named these all-or-nothing systems ‘irreducibly complex.’3 Removing a single core part from one of these systems keeps the entire system from working, and this implies that the system was initially built with all of its parts intact.

This is exactly what researchers expect to see if God purposely created living systems, rather than if natural processes accidentally built living systems bit-by-bit—as Darwinian philosophy maintains.

Kuhn cited the work of another medical doctor, Geoffrey Simmons, who described 17 ‘all or nothing’ human body systems.4 These combine with many others to form the entire human body—a system of systems—that is irreducible at many levels, from gross anatomy to biochemistry. For example, just as a woman would die without her heart, she would also die without the vital blood biochemical hemoglobin.

But even an intact heart and hemoglobin need regulation. A heart that beats too fast or too slow can be just as Read more…

U.S. Military Beginning Review of Syria Options as Officials Warn International ‘Militarisation’ Against Assad Grows Closer

02/08/2012 Leave a comment

Rumors that Iran has deployed 15,000 troops to Syria to assist Assad and that British and Qatari troops have now entered Syria to assist the rebels will, if true, mean that we may see a point of no return much sooner rather than later …

By Barbara Starr – “Although the U.S. focus remains on exerting diplomatic and economic pressure on Syria, the Pentagon and the U.S. Central Command have begun a preliminary internal review of U.S. military capabilities, CNN has learned.

The options are being prepared in the event President Barack Obama were to call for them. Two senior administration officials who spoke about the review to CNN emphasized that U.S. policy for now remains the use of non-military options.

The focus on diplomatic options was underscored by the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in an interview with CNN on Tuesday.

‘Before we start talking about military options, we very much want to ensure that we have exhausted all the political, economic and diplomatic means at our disposal,’ Ambassador Susan Rice said on CNN’s ‘Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.’

The president has also said that the U.S. is working on non-military options first.

‘I think it is very important for us to try to resolve this without recourse to outside military intervention, and I think that’s possible,’ Obama said in an interview with NBC News that aired during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

But the military is beginning to look at what can be done. One of the senior U.S. officials called the effort a ‘scoping exercise’ to see what capabilities are available given other U.S. military commitments in the region.” Read more.

International ‘militarisation’ in Syria growing closer, warns US official – “The official from the State Department told The Daily Telegraph that while the White House wants to exhaust all its diplomatic options, the debate in Washington has shifted away from diplomacy and towards more robust action since Russia and China blocked a United Nations resolution condemning Syria. The Pentagon’s Central Command has begun a preliminary internal review of US military capabilities in the region, which one senior official called a “scoping exercise” that would provide options for the president if and when they were requested. The White House said it was talking to allies about holding a ‘Friends of Syria’ meeting in the near future and was considering delivering humanitarian aid to affected areas in the country.” Read more.

Massachusetts: Cape Cod Dolphin Beachings Rise to 129 with 92 Deaths, More Expected in Largest Mass Stranding in MA’s Recorded History

02/08/2012 Leave a comment

Here’s an update on this story, with no end in sight …

By Miguel Llanos – “More strandings are expected after 129 dolphins beached themselves on Cape Cod in the last three weeks, with 92 dying in ‘the single largest stranding’ of dolphins in the Northeast since at least 1999, the International Fund for Animal Welfare reported Monday.

On Sunday, four dolphins were stranded along Cape Cod’s hook-shaped peninsula and were quickly helped back to sea. The Massachusetts peninsula sees many dolphin strandings each year, but the 129 since Jan. 12 is typically about what rescuers see over an entire year, based on records that go back to 1999, IFAW marine mammal rescue manager Katie Moore told msnbc.com.

‘This event started on the 12th and is still continuing,’ she added at a press conference on Monday, noting that rescuers from IFAW and other stranding networks were deployed in ‘anticipation of more dolphins coming in.’

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which manages the rescue response, echoed the concern.

For common dolphins, the species that has been stranding in Cape Cod, ‘this is the largest, most protracted stranding event in recent decades,’ Teri Rowles, who coordinates NOAA’s Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program, told msnbc.com.

Most of the dolphins have appeared to be in good health, adding to the mystery of why so many have come ashore. Common dolphins are known to strand in groups due to their tight social structure, but given the large numbers this year, other factors such as weather and tides are being investigated.” Read more.

Cameroon: Militant Muslims Warn Christian Converts to Return to Islam or ‘Face Allah’s Wrath’

02/08/2012 3 comments

“Christian converts in northern Cameroon are coming under intensifying pressure following a warning from militant Muslims to return to Islam or ‘face Allah’s wrath’.

The handwritten threat from a group identifying itself as Boko Haram was put under the door of a church leader’s house earlier this month. It called on all Christian converts to return to Islam at the mosque on Friday 13 January or face the wrath of the god of Islam.

A few days later, two turbaned men arrived by motorcycle at the church leader’s house one night while he was away. One entered the house and ordered the man’s wife and children to lie face down on the ground. He asked where the church leader was and then searched the house. The intruder told the wife to tell her husband that they would get him no matter where he was hiding.

After this distressing incident, the family fled the village, and the other converts have gone into hiding.

Another Christian leader, who has been trying to inform church leaders about the militants’ threat, also had his house searched at night. Two turbaned men carrying a sword turned up and spoke to the man’s wife; they also searched the property and stole his computer. The leader arrived home after the pair had left.

Boko Haram is a militant Islamist group that has been wreaking havoc against Christians in neighbouring Nigeria.” Read more.

Japan: Study Finds Fukushima Disaster Worse than Chernobyl on Bird Population

02/08/2012 Leave a comment

By David McNeill – “Researchers working around Japan’s disabled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant say bird populations there have begun to dwindle, in what may be a chilling harbinger of the impact of radioactive fallout on local life.

In the first major study of the impact of the world’s worst nuclear crisis in 25 years, the researchers, from Japan, the US and Denmark, said their analysis of 14 species of bird common to Fukushima and Chernobyl, the Ukrainian city which suffered a similar nuclear meltdown, showed the effect on abundance is worse in the Japanese disaster zone.

The study, published next week in the journal Environmental Pollution, suggests that its findings demonstrate ‘an immediate negative consequence of radiation for birds during the main breeding season [of] March [to] July’.

Two of the study’s authors have spent years working in the irradiated 2,850 sq metre zone around the Chernobyl single-reactor plant, which exploded in 1986 and showered much of Europe with caesium, strontium, plutonium and other radioactive toxins. A quarter of a century later, the region is almost devoid of people.

Timothy Mousseau and Anders Pape Moller say their research uncovered major negative effects among the bird population, including reductions in longevity and in male fertility, and birds with smaller brains.

Many species show ‘dramatically’ elevated DNA mutation rates, developmental abnormalities and extinctions, they add, while insect life has been significantly reduced.” Source – The Independent.

Radioactive cesium in San Francisco-area milk now at 150% of EPA’s maximum limit – “The EPA Maximum Contaminant Level for radioactive cesium in milk is 3 picocuries/L: ‘EPA lumps these gamma and beta emitters together under one collective MCL [Maximum Contaminant Level], so if you’re seeing cesium-137 in your milk or water, the MCL is 3.0 picocuries per liter; if you’re seeing iodine-131, the MCL is 3.0; if you’re seeing cesium-137 and iodine-131, the MCL is still 3.0.’ … These are the highest cesium levels detected by UCB since at least August 2011 (As the MDA was higher over the summer, it’s hard to be sure of the exact levels at that time):” Read more.

A Welcomed Surprise: Leftist Media Publication ‘Newsweek’ Notices Muslim Persecution of Christians

02/08/2012 Leave a comment

By Robert Spencer – “It is good to see Newsweek, which has been an energetically dhimmi publication, finally taking notice of the rampant worldwide Muslim persecution of Christians. It’s also quite surprising, given that in the past, Newsweek has denied the existence of the stealth jihad; billowed fogs of deception about the pro-Sharia Ground Zero mosque imam Feisal Abdul Rauf as a ‘moderate’; dismissed concerns about the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as a ‘conspiracy theory’; dismissed concerns about Eurabia, i.e., the Islamization of Europe, as ‘false fears’; and even called for a general surrender of the West to the global jihad.

So why is a thoroughly compromised publication like Newsweek suddenly noticing the worldwide jihad against Christians? Your guess is as good as mine, but in any case it is a welcome development to see the mainstream media finally waking up to this phenomenon, which we have been tracking here at Jihad Watch for years. Ayaan Hirsi Ali has written a fine piece for them. Because she is an ex-Muslim and an African woman, she is allowed to say things in Newsweek that Newsweek would charge me with ‘racism,’ ‘bigotry’ and ‘Islamophobia’ for saying.

For more in-depth coverage of this issue, see my April 2011 pamphlet, ‘Muslim Persecution of Christians.’ And as for Snoozeweek, in case you’re not planning a trip to the dentist this week, here is an excerpt: ‘Ayaan Hirsi Ali: The Global War on Christians in the Muslim World,’by Ayaan Hirsi Ali in Newsweek, February 6:” Read more.

‘Bloody’: Christian Persecution is ‘Coursing Through Muslim-Majority Nations from One End of the Globe to the Other’ – “We hear so often about Muslims as victims of abuse in the West and combatants in the Arab Spring’s fight against tyranny. But, in fact, a wholly different kind of war is underway—an unrecognized battle costing thousands of lives. Christians are being killed in the Islamic world because of their religion. It is a rising genocide that ought to provoke global alarm… The conspiracy of silence surrounding this violent expression of religious intolerance has to stop. Nothing less than the fate of Christianity—and ultimately of all religious minorities—in the Islamic world is at stake.” Read more.
