California: San Francisco On High-Alert After Terror Threat

By Lilian Kim, KGO-TV – “The Department of Homeland Security is beefing up its presence at airports, train stations and other travel hubs in the United States in the wake of global travel warning imposed on all U.S. citizens.

Local authorities are not going into specifics but the San Francisco Police Department does acknowledge receiving a bulletin by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and DHS. The SFPD says their officers are monitoring various areas of the city and will determine if additional resources are necessary.

They say they have the ability to rapidly deploy and redeploy resources as the department deems necessary.

No specific location has been mentioned, but authorities are keeping a close eye on airports, train stations and other transportation hubs. There is also increased scrutiny of visitors coming into the United States.

These latest measures have been implemented out of an abundance of caution.” Read more.

Focus.de (Translation) – “Islamists from Chechnya have severely abused a couple in the central receiving point [for asylum seekers] in the Brandenburg, Germany. Their motivation: The couple, who are refugees from Caucasus, had behaved immorally.

Ten men forced their way into the couple’s bedroom. The attackers kicked the 23-year old Zulikhan in the stomach, who thus lost her unborn child. Her husband, who was seriously injured by numerous blows, was sent to the hospital for inpatient treatment.

The ‘punishment action’ for allegedly immoral behavior occurred last week, on Friday. The 38-year-old leader of the Islamists has enforced ‘traditional values​​’ of Islam on several occasions in the area, according to police interrogation records.

According to FOCUS information, the man apparently belongs to the radical separatist movement ‘Caucasus Emirate’. The two Boston bombers, the Tsarnaev brothers, were also part of this movement.

Strong Earthquake Strikes Northeast Japan Near Fukushima

USA Today – “TOKYO (AP) — A strong earthquake shook northeastern Japan on Sunday in the same region devastated by a giant tsunami and temblor 2-1/2 years ago, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 struck shortly after midday, and was centered off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, and 30 miles below the seabed.

The quake shook a wide region, including Fukushima and Iwate prefectures, and there was no risk of a tsunami, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.” Read more.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini established al-Quds Day following the Islamic Revolution in 1979 as a day of solidarity with Palestinian Arabs in their fight against the Israeli occupation — and especially Jerusalem, which Muslims call ‘Quds.’

Adorned with pictures of the al-Aksa Mosque on the Temple Mount, the banners warned Israel in Hebrew and Arabic, ‘We’re Coming!’

Nasrallah called on the Lebanese people to come out in force Friday to send a message to the Israelis.

Iran’s newly elected President Hasan Rouhani, touted as a moderate by many, called for the ‘removal’ of Israel, much like his predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

‘The Zionist regime has been a wound on the body of the Islamic world for years and the wound should be removed,’ Rouhani said after taking party in the festivities, Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agencyreported.” Read more.

European Union Adds Military Wing Of Hezbollah To List Of Terrorist Organizations – “The military wing of Hezbollah, the powerful Lebanese Shiite group, was blacklisted by European Union ministers as a terrorist organization on Monday in a policy shift that reflected their concern about Hezbollah’s suspected involvement in Europe-based bombings and its growing role in the Syria war. The blacklisting designation was welcomed by the United States and Israel, which have long regarded Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood Supporters Attack More Christian Churches, Homes In Minya Village

AINA – “Six Copts were injured in a Minya village after clashes with pro-Mursi demonstrators on Thursday evening.

The clashes left six injured.

Several Minya residents filed official complaints accusing supporters of deposed president Mohamed Mursi of attacking them and destroying their cars as they go to work in the morning and return back home.

Eyewitnesses said that Mursi’s supporters forced the Copts of Nazlet Abid Village to suspend work in more than 400 white brick factories where most village residents work.

In Delga Village south of Minya, the houses of several Copts and village churches were attacked by stones during a pro-Mursi march Thursday night.

Father Ayoub Youssef, the patron of Mar Guirguis Church for Catholics, urged security bodies to intervene in order to put an end to the attacks on Copts.

In preparation for Friday’s pro-Mursi demonstrations, security forces in Minya intensified their presence at vital facilities such as the governorate’s security headquarters, police stations, and banks.” Source – AINA.

Egypt: Christian Homes, Two Churches Attacked Back To Back – “Hours ago, dozens of Brotherhood members and supporters attacked an ‘evangelical church’ in the village of Reeda, in the governorate of al-Minya in Upper Egypt, destroying its exterior.   They also opened gunfire and hurled rocks and other projectiles at the Coptic Christian homes near the church, ‘creating,’ according to the Tahrir report, “terror among the Copts, especially considering the total absence of security forces.’ A separate report, also from hours ago, tells of how another church — as well as the residence of its priest — were set on fire in the Beni Ahmed village.” Read more.

Muslim Brotherhood ‘Taking Anger Out’ On Christians – “In the wake of the military coup in Egypt earlier this month, media reports frequently recounted the violent clashes between the military and supporters of the ousted Muslim Brotherhood regime of Mohammed Morsi. What is not often reported, however, is the brutal treatment of Coptic Christians, usually at the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood. ‘Members of the Muslim Brotherhood have taken their anger out specifically on Christians because many Christians wanted the Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi out of power and were speaking out, including the Coptic pope,’ said Jerry Dykstra … ‘So in the last three weeks or so, we’ve seen Christians targeted, especially a Coptic priest who was killed in northern Sinai. You’ve heard bad news about Fukushima recently.

But it’s worse than you know.

The Wall Street Journal notes that radiation levels outside the plant are likely higher than inside the reactor:

NRA [Nuclear Regulation Authority] officials said highly contaminated water may be leaking into the soil from a number of trenches, allowing the water to seep into the site’s groundwater and eventually into the ocean.

Both radioactive substances are considered harmful to health. An NRA official said Monday that the very high levels were likely to be even higher than those within the reactor units themselves.

It was by far the highest concentration of radioactivity detected since soon after Japan’s March 2011 earthquake and tsunami ….

How could it be more radioactive outside the nuclear reactors? The reactors have lost containment, and experts have no idea where the nuclear cores are.

And the problems which have been detected at ground-level are only the tip of the iceberg.  Japan Times points out:

Cesium levels in water under Fukushima No. 1 plant soar the deeper it gets, Tepco reveals

Tepco found 950 million becquerels of cesium and 520 million becquerels of beta ray-emitting radioactive substances, including strontium, in the water from 13 meters [~43 feet] underground.

Water from 1 meter down contained 340 million becquerels, and a sample from 7 meters down contained 350 million becquerels.

Cesium, a metallic element, is subject to gravity.

Yomiuri reports that highly-radioactive groundwater could start coming to the surface at the Fukushima plant:

TEPCO spokesman Noriyuki Imaizumi revealed the water level of the tainted groundwater in a test well located on the sea side of the No. 2 reactor has risen rapidly.

“If the water level continues to rise, it could reach the ground surface,” Imaizumi, an acting general manager of the company’s nuclear power-related division, said at a press conference Monday.

According to the company, the water level has risen about 70 centimeters over the past 20 days.

To prevent contaminated groundwater from leaking into the sea, TEPCO is working to reinforce the ground foundation of seawalls. The rising water level in the test well means the measures to prevent leakage have been working.

However, the company apparently failed to give much thought to the fact that the groundwater would have nowhere else to go ….

By Ruth Sherlock, The Telegraph – “Tens of thousands Syriac Christians – members of the oldest Christian community in the world – have fled their ancestral provinces of Deir al-Zour and Hasakah in northeastern Syria, residents have said.

‘It breaks my heart to think how our long history is being uprooted,’ said Ishow Goriye, the head of a Syriac Christian political Hasakah.

Mr Goriye, told The Daily Telegraph how, over the past two years he has watched as Christian families from Hasakah pack their possessions on the rooftops of their vehicles and flee their homes ‘with little plan to come back’.

Conflict in the area, desperate economic conditions, lawlessness, and persecution by rebel groups born from the perception that Christians support the regime, remain the main reasons for why Christian families are fleeing the area.

The growing presence of radical jihadist groups, including al-Qaeda, has also seen Christians targeted.

‘It began as kidnapping for money, but then they started telling me I should worship Allah,’ a male Christian resident of Hasakah who was kidnapped by jihadists said.

‘I was with five others. We were tied and blindfolded and pushed down on our knees. One of the kidnappers leant so close to my face I could feel his breath. He hissed: ‘Why don’t you become a Muslim? Then you can be free’.’

Another Christian in Hasakah said he knew of ‘five forced conversions’ in recent weeks.

Mr Goriye’s Christian ‘Syriac Union’ party has long been in opposition to President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

While speaking to The Telegraph, its members were loath to criticise the opposition rebels, but many confessed that the situation had become ‘too bad’ not to talk about it.” Read more.

The 36-year-old Frankfurter, who is said to have attacked the Islam critic and self-described prophet Zahid Khan, in a forest parking place between Rodgau and Dietzenbach on Monday, may have been commissioned to do it by someone else, said Sebastian Zwiebel, spokesman of the Darmstadt state prosecutor’s office, yesterday to the Frankfurter Rundschau.

One person suspected of issuing the contract, an Islamic activist, has been arrested in the meantime. The man, who is now in custody, disputes the charges. Offenbach District Court has issued warrants against the 36-year-old Frankfurter as well as the suspected mastermind for conspiracy to murder.

One line of inquiry could lead into the Salafist scene. One year ago the Darmstadt state prosecutor’s office investigated prominent radical Islamist leaders because of suspects plans to commit murder.

On Friday Offenbach district court issued a warrant for conspiracy to murder against the Marburg Islamist Stefan Salim Nagi erlassen. The Darmstadt state prosecutor’s office assumes that he commissioned a drug-dependent homeless man from Frankfurt to murder the Islam critic and self-declared prophet Zahid Khan from Rodgau.

The Frankfurter identified Nagi as the person who had hired him based on a photograph, said Sebastian Zwiebel, spokesman for the Darmstadt state prosecutor’s office. If it turns out to be true that Nagi had also driven the Frankfurter to the scene of the crime, then he would be considered not only the paymaster but an accomplice, he said.

This Is Exeter – “A SOLDIER was attacked in an Exeter underpass by a gang who chanted ‘Lee Rigby’ as they kicked him on the floor.

The 18-year-old, known as Alexander, has been a member of the Coldstream Guards for six months.

But on route to his home in St Thomas, Exeter, he said he was targeted by the hateful mob as he is a serving member of the armed forces.

After a period of about two minutes he managed to escape after fighting off but fear his injuries could have been a lot worse.

The incident happened at just before 2pm on Wednesday afternoon.

He said: ‘I was walking home from the train station at Exeter Central and got to the ruins at Exe bridges. As I went into the underpass a group of lads walked past me.

‘They stopped and asked if I was in the forces. I replied yes and before I could say why, fists were coming towards my face.

‘I was knocked to the floor and then carried on kicking me for what felt like a couple of minutes.

‘I crawled up in a ball but couldn’t get up. One was trying to get a screwdriver out of his pocket. I managed to get it off him and fight him off.

‘They were all covered up so I couldn’t see any of their faces. They kept shouting Lee Rigby – like they wanted to re-create what happened.’

After managing to escape and run off Alex was left with a split lip, sore ribs and a swollen jaw. H was treated at the NHS Walk in Centre

He said: ‘I have only been in the army six months but this is the first time anything like this has happened. I was very shaken up by it but am starting to get to grips with what happened.'” Read more.

The earth has been shaken and will continue to be shaken by “seismic events” both literally (geophysical and hydrological hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) and figuratively (wars and rumors of war, terrorism, insurrections, revolutions), for in sin this world has fallen and, until the restoration of all things, the whole of creation will continue to groan and labor with birth pangs because of it (Romans 8:22) …

US State Department Issues Worldwide Travel Alert Because Of Al-Qaida Terror Threats

By Brett LoGiurato, Business Insider – “The State Department has issued a worldwide travel alert because of the threat terrorist attacks from al-Qaida and affiliated organizations, it said Friday.

The State Department cited the potential for terrorist attacks in the Middle East, North Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula.

‘Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August,’ the department said in a statement.

The department said that the alert does not expire until Aug. 31.

On Thursday, the State Department said it would close at least 18 diplomatic posts in the Middle East and surrounding areas because of the threats.

The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula.  Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August.  This Travel Alert expires on August 31, 2013.

Terrorists may elect to use a variety of means and weapons and target both official and private interests. U.S. citizens are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure.  Terrorists have targeted and attacked subway and rail systems, as well as aviation and maritime services.  U.S. citizens should take every precaution to be aware of their surroundings and to adopt appropriate safety measures to protect themselves when traveling.

We continue to work closely with other nations on the threat from international terrorism, including from al-Qa’ida.
