Philippines: Fish Still Dying as Tons More Pulled Out of Taal Lake


“MANILA — Some 3.8 tons of dead milkfish (bangus) and tilapia have been recorded from 38 fish cages operated by 18 fish farmers in Barangay Leviste, Balakikong and Berinayan, all in Laurel, Batangas Thursday morning, the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) reported.

BFAR Director Asis Perez meanwhile expressed optimism that the reduction of fish mortality in Taal Lake would continue as a result of interventions undertaken by local government units, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Task Force Taal Lake.

On Wednesday, BFAR technical teams recorded low dissolved oxygen levels in Laurel, Agoncillo and San Nicolas ranging from 0.96 to 2.85 parts per million. The ideal level is 6.0 parts per million for the growing of bangus.” Read more.
