Cops, Firefighters Watch on Shore and Do Nothing as Suicide Victim Drowns
New Motto: ‘To Serve and Protect. If We Can Afford It.’
By Douglas Stanglin – “Fire and police teams say city policy and budget cuts are to blame for emergency teams watching from shore while a 52-year-old man apparently took his own life in the Bay Area surf near San Francisco on Memorial Day.
The San Jose Mercury News says Alameda police and firefighters responded quickly to a 911 call about an attempted suicide off Crown Beach, but firefighters could not enter the water because they are not trained in land/water rescue. Police stayed back because, they said, the victim, Raymond Zack, was suicidal and possibly violent.
Zack stood in the neck-deep water for nearly an hour — sometimes raising his arms above the surface — before he eventually floated away about 150 yards from shore, the newspaper reports.” Read more.
Muslim Woman Handing Out Qur’ans at Minnesota Library Stabs 2 People
“BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) — Two people were stabbed in a seemingly random attack at a Twin Cities library.
After the incident Wednesday night at the Oxboro Library in Bloomington, 35-year-old Samira Abdalla Salim was arrested.
Salim was no stranger to the Oxboro Library. She had a reputation for handing out the Koran and talking religion outside the building.
‘They had some issues with her harassing other patrons,’ said Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik.
But it’s what investigators say she did on Wednesday night that surprised everyone.
‘I never thought she would do that. She was very nice,’ said Anisa Ahmed, Salim’s neighbor.
Salim is accused of stabbing two people. The first victim was a woman who was walking into the library.
‘The next thing she knew, she felt a sharp pain in the middle of her back and realized she had been stabbed,’ said Stehlik.
The second was a security guard who heard the victim’s cry for help. He went to talk to Salim in the parking lot.
‘Spoke to her briefly and then she actually stabbed him as well. Stabbed him in the abdomen,’ said Stehlik.” Read more.
Superbug First Found in India Infects Canadian Man with No Travel History to India
“NEW DELHI: NDM-1, the enzyme associated with extensive antibiotic resistance that was found in India last year, has jumped to new bacteria strains and infected a Canadian, who had no travel history to India.
For the first time, scientists in Canada have reported local acquisition of an organism producing NDM-1 in Ontario, Canada. NDM-1 has been found in bacterial species other than E coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
The findings are in tune with a TOI report a few weeks ago that had pointed out about NDM-1 gene, which has been jumping between various species of bacteria at a ‘superfast speed.’
British scientists from the Cardiff University, who first reported on the existence of NDM-1, told TOI that when it was first detected in 2006, the bacteria were found only in E Coli.
‘We have found NDM-1 gene in more than 20 different species of bacteria. NDM-1 can move at unprecedented speed, making more and more species of bacteria drug resistant,’ said Dr Mark Toleman told TOI.” Read more.
10 Reasons Why The ‘Economic Recovery’ Is a Fraud
By Paul Joseph Watson – “Yesterday’s so-called ‘horror’ show for the US economy with the release of new data illustrating how the economic ‘recovery’ has all but ground to a halt was met with feigned astonishment and shock by the establishment media, and yet for the past two years the public has been continually deceived about the true state of the financial system.
All the hot air about an ‘economic recovery’ has served to hide the fact that the United States is slipping back into a double-dip recession, if not a second ‘great depression,’ as market strategist Peter Yastrow told CNBC yesterday.
1) In 2009, when the media claimed the economic ‘recovery’ had begun, oil prices averaged $54 dollars a barrel. In the 24 months since, the cost has doubled. Americans are paying more and more to fill up at the pump with Goldman Sachs predicting that gas will hit $5 dollars a gallon by summer. This figure was already reached in Washington DC two months ago. Far from representing a ‘recovery’ this is in fact another crippling expense that many Americans people simply cannot afford.
2) The housing market has shown no ‘recovery’ whatsoever. The collapse in US house prices ‘is now greater than that suffered during the Great Depression.’ Prices have plunged by 33 per cent since 2007. Home ownership is at its lowest level for 20 years.” Read more.

Nonfarm payrolls increased 54,000 last month, the Labor Department said, fewer than the most pessimistic forecast in the Reuters survey and just over a third of what economists had expected.” Read more.
Mexico’s Popocatepetl Volcano Blasts Tower of Ash
“MEXICO CITY — The Popocatepetl volcano that towers over Mexico City is rumbling again.
The 17,886-foot (5,450-meter) mountain shot a blast of ash about 2 miles (3 kilometers) above its crater at dawn Friday.
Mexico’s national disaster prevention agency says the cloud drifted first to the west and then turned back east toward the city of Puebla.
It says the mountain shook for several minutes before the ash burst out.” Read more.
New Strain of MRSA ‘Superbug’ Found in British Cow Milk, Infecting Humans
By Stephen Adams – “The new strain with high resistance to antibiotics was found by accident by a team from Cambridge University and has already infected humans.
Dr Mark Holmes said dairy farmers under ‘relentless financial pressure’ from supermarkets were forced to use powerful antibiotics which could well have led to the emergence of resistant bacteria.
He and a team of fellow Cambridge University scientists have identified this new strain, which has been found in milk, cows and humans.
In a handful of cases humans have become seriously ill, although it is not known if anyone has died of it.
At the moment the scientists estimate there are probably less than 100 cases which is a small fraction of the total number of MRSA cases.
However, they appear to be growing rapidly.” Read more.

X-BAC: Mutant Strain of E. Coli is Responsible For At Least 18 Deaths and 1600+ Infections in Europe; Attacks Kidneys, Causes Liver Damage
By MARIA CHENG and NATALIYA VASILYEVA – “LONDON (AP) – The World Health Organization said Thursday that the E. coli bacteria responsible for a deadly outbreak that has left 18 dead and sickened hundreds in Europe is a new strain that has never been seen before.
Preliminary genetic sequencing suggests the strain is a mutant form of two different E. coli bacteria, with aggressive genes that could explain why the Europe-wide outbreak appears to be so massive and dangerous, the agency said.
Hilde Kruse, a food safety expert at the WHO, told The Associated Press that ‘this is a unique strain that has never been isolated from patients before.’
She added that the new strain has ‘various characteristics that make it more virulent and toxin-producing’ than the hundreds of E. coli strains that people naturally carry in their intestines.
So far, the mutant E. coli strain has sickened more than 1,500 people, including 470 who have developed a rare kidney failure complication, and killed 18, including one overnight in Germany, the country hit hardest by the outbreak.” Read more.

Shrimps, Crabs and Other Marine Species Now Being Affected by Massive Fishkill in Taal Lake, Philippines
“MANILA, Philippines – Other marine species are now being affected by the fishkill in Taal Lake, which earlier killed over 500 metric tons of bangus and tilapia. Authorities said the fishkill could last for 2 more months.
According to Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Calabarzon officer-in-charge Regional Director Esmeralda Manalang, dead shrimps, crabs, biya and other seafood were also found floating in Taal Lake. However, Manalang said the number of the affected species is not overwhelming.
Authorities said that the fishkill will continue in the coming days since the salt oxygen level in the lake has not reached the normal level yet.” Read more.
Thousands of Starfish, Crabs and Other Sea Creatures Have ‘Just Come to the End of Their Life Cycle’ in Flintshire, UK
By Francesca Elliott – “THOUSANDS of dead starfish, crabs and other sea creatures were found washed up on a Flintshire beach.
But the creatures, which have now been washed away, did not die in suspicious circumstances at Talacre Beach, a county coastal ranger told the Chronicle.
Alistair Hemphill said: ‘It’s not a natural disaster. It’s not a sudden beaching of starfish.
It could be that they have just come to the end of their life cycle, died after mating and spawning and have lain dead in the sea for a long time.'” Read more.
