‘This is like putting Jack the Ripper in charge of a women’s shelter,’ said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, the Geneva based non-governmental organization, which announced it will hold protest events outside the UN hall featuring Iranian dissidents.

‘Iran is an international outlaw state that illegally supplies rockets to Syria, Hezbollah, and Hamas, aiding and abetting mass murder and terrorism. To make this rogue regime head of world arms control is simply an outrage. Abusers of international norms should not be the public face of the UN.’

U.N. officials say Iran’s post is merely the result of an automatic rotation.

But UN Watch rejected attempts to downplay what it described as ‘a fundamental conflict of interests’ and ‘an act certain to be exploited by Iranian propaganda to legitimize the mullahs’ cruel regime.’

‘UN Watch calls on U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice, EU High Commissioner Catherine Ashton, and UN chief Ban Ki-moon to make clear that when the United Nations imposes four rounds of sanctions on Iran for illicit nuclear activities, condemns it for illegally arming the murderous Syrian regime, and denounces Tehran’s massive abuse of human rights, this kind of appointment just defies common sense and harms the UN’s credibility,’ said Neuer.” Read more.

Muslim Man From Saudi Arabia With Altered Passport And Pressure Cooker Arrested At Detroit Metro Airport

It may mean nothing. Besides, according to Homeland Security, this man should be on a “trusted travelers” list and stop wasting federal agent’s time. What information could possibly be on his passport that he wouldn’t want the authorities to see? …

By Tresa Baldas, Detroit Free Press – “Federal agents arrested a suspicious traveler with an altered Saudi Arabian passport at Detroit Metro Airport over the weekend after discovering a pressure cooker in his luggage.

According to a criminal complaint filed today in U.S. District Court, the passenger, Hussain Al Khawahir initially told customs officers that he brought the pressure cooker for a nephew at the University of Toledo because pressure cookers are not sold in Saudi Arabia, the complaint said. The man then changed his story and admitted his nephew had purchased a pressure cooker in America before, but it ‘was cheap’ and broke after the first use.

Then came the Miranda rights.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) enforcement officer read the passenger his rights and took him into custody.

But it wasn’t just the pressure cooker — a device that was used in last month’s Boston Marathon bombings — that raised red flags for border officials. The man’s passport also caught their attention.

According to the complaint, two customs officers noticed a page had been removed from the man’s passport when he arrived at Detroit Metro on Saturday from Saudi Arabia via Amersterdam. The passenger, who said he would be visiting his nephew in Toledo, said that he did not know how the page was removed from the passport, the complaint said. The passenger told the officers that the passport was locked in a box that only he, his wife and three minor children have access to in his home, the complaint said. His hometown was not listed in court documents.

A minute after being read his Miranda rights, the passenger invoked his right to remain silent, the complaint said.” Read more.

Qur’an Sura 4:34, “Men have authority over women because [Allah] has made the one superior to the other… Good women are obedient… As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them. Then if they obey you, take no further action against them…”

Hadith – Abu Dawud, 2142, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A man will not be asked as to why he beat his wife.”

By Patrick Howley, The Daily Caller – “The Islamic Society of Boston, the mosque attended by Boston Marathon bombing suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokar Tsarnaev, posted an article on its website in September 2004 that advocated for the beating of women as a last resort to force them to behave.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based mosque posted an English translation of Saudi cleric Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajid’s 1997 work, ‘The Muslim Home: 40 Recommendations in Light of the Quran and Sunnah,’ which the mosque headlined, ’40 Recommendations for the Muslim Home’ ‘Hinting at punishment is an effective means of discipline, so the reason for hanging up a whip or stick in the house was explained in another report, where the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘Hang up the whip where the members of the household can see it, for this is more effective in disciplining them,’’ the article states.

‘Seeing the means of punishment hanging up will make those who have bad intentions refrain from indulging in bad behaviour, lest they get a taste of the punishment. It will motivate them to behave themselves and be good mannered,’ it says.” Read more.

Global Health Officials Worried As Two New Viruses in Middle East And China Could Spark Possible World-Wide Outbreak

By MARIA CHENG, Associated Press – “LONDON (AP) — Two respiratory viruses in different parts of the world have captured the attention of global health officials – a novel coronavirus in the Middle East and a new bird flu spreading in China.

Last week, the coronavirus related to SARS spread to France, where one patient who probably caught the disease in Dubai infected his hospital roommate. Officials are now trying to track down everyone who went on a tour group holiday to Dubai with the first patient as well as all contacts of the second patient. Since it was first spotted last year, the new coronavirus has infected 34 people, killing 18 of them. Nearly all had some connection to the Middle East.

The World Health Organization, however, says there is no reason to think the virus is restricted to the Middle East and has advised health officials worldwide to closely monitor any unusual respiratory cases.

At the same time, a new bird flu strain, H7N9, has been infecting people in China since at least March, causing 32 deaths out of 131 known cases.

WHO, which is closely monitoring the viruses, says both have the potential to cause a pandemic – a global epidemic – if they evolve into a form easily spread between people. Here’s a crash course in what we know so far about them…” Read more.

France Confirms New Case Of Deadly SARs-Like Virus – “French health authorities said on Sunday that a second person infected with a deadly new SARS-like virus coronavirus has been transferred to intensive care after his condition worsened. The man fell ill after sharing a hospital ward with the first victim identified in France… Two more potential cases were also being investigated. The regional health authority said the first man, who was hospitalised after returning from a holiday in Dubai in April, was in a ‘very serious but stable condition’.” Read more.

WHO Says New Coronavirus May Be Passed Person To Person – “This comes after the French health ministry confirmed a second man had contracted the virus in a possible case of human-to-human transmission. Two more people in Saudi Arabia are also reported to have died from the virus, according to health officials. NCoV is known to cause pneumonia and sometimes kidney failure. World Health Organization (WHO) officials have expressed concern over the clusters of cases of the new coronavirus strain and the potential for it to spread.” Read more.

‘Colossal’: Strongest Solar Flare Of 2013 Shoots From The Sun

By Tariq Malik, Fox News – “The sun unleashed a colossal Mother’s Day solar flare on Sunday May 12 in what has become the most powerful solar eruption of the year.

The giant solar flare, which registered as one of the largest eruptions the sun can unleash, peaked Sunday night at 10:17 p.m. EDT (0217 GMT) and was captured on camera by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. It sparked an hour-long high-frequency radio blackout, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center overseen by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Sunday’s solar flare registered as an X1.7-class sun eruption — the strongest type of solar flare the sun can fire off, according to the SWPC officials.

When aimed directly at Earth, X-class solar flares can pose a risk to astronauts and satellites in orbit, as well as interfere with communications and GPS signals on the ground. They can also super-charge Earth’s northern lights displays by bombarding the planet with solar particles, triggering awesome aurora light shows.

But Sunday’s solar flare erupted from an active sunspot on the far side of the sun, so it was not directly facing Earth when it unleashed a wave of super-hot plasma called a coronal mass ejection (CME).” Read more.
