Palestinian Official: Netanyahu’s Speech to Congress was a ‘Declaration of War’

By Catrina Stewart – “Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, wrapped up a rocky visit to Washington yesterday with a defiant speech to US Congress that appeared to dash any hopes of reviving stalled peace talks with the Palestinians.

In what one Israeli commentator said would be the ‘speech of his life’, Mr Netanyahu set forth his vision of peace, saying that he was willing to make “painful compromises” that would involve giving up parts of the “ancestral Jewish homeland”.

The address was received with rapturous approval from both houses of Congress, the audience rising to its feet more than two dozen times in just the first 15 minutes. But it was described by one Palestinian official as a ‘declaration of war’, offering little new and rejecting all of the Palestinians’ key demands.” Read more.

    Obama seemed to me to have had a very dejected look on his face when the PM abomished him – it was very evident that he did not like what he was hearing – he looked like Pharaoh in front of Moses – I would not be surprised that when push comes to shove in Sept he finds a way around in supporting Israel in the UN declartion for a Palestinian State – I am not sure how the full process works but I believe that he may very well see Phareoh be Phareoh

    I hope the US vetoes the vote instead of ‘abstaining’. Given Obama’s track record he may just tell his representative to vote ‘Present’ …

    I hope they do veto it but I have read somewhere that they only have a veto if it goes through the Security Council ?? There is a second option not sure what it is called maybe the General Assembly which is outside of the Security Council where a veto option to the US is not available – not sure exactly how this works but this is what I have read somewhere – On Sept 14th the 66th General Assembly will be chaired by an Arab nation which is either Bahrain or Qatar

    All members of the United Nations are represented in the General Assembly. Each nation, rich or poor, large or small, has one vote

    Well it is suppose to go through the UNSC, but it could be circumvented:

    “President Obama said Thursday that Palestinian ‘efforts to delegitimize Israel will end in failure,’ adding that ‘symbolic actions to isolate Israel at the United Nations in September won’t create an independent state.’

    In terms of formal U.N. membership, he is correct. Chapter II, Article 4 of the U.N. Charter says, ‘The admission of any such state to membership in the United Nations will be effected by a decision of the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.’

    That suggests that the U.S., a member of the Security Council, would veto any Palestinian membership if negotiations with Israel do not succeed.

    But a U.S. veto may ultimately not matter. An effort is underway at the U.N. to garner support for a General Assembly vote in favor of Palestinian membership. Supporters would have to find a two-thirds’ majority of the 193 votes in the General Assembly to prevail.

    The plan is to then invoke General Assembly Resolution 377 A (V), which was given the title ‘Uniting for Peace.’ Passed in 1950, according to the U.N. treaty documents, it ‘states that where the Security Council, because of lack of unanimity of the permanent members, fails to exercise its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, the General Assembly shall seize itself of the matter.’ That basically means that the U.N. General Assembly would bypass the U.N. Security Council.

    Now, the wording is such that it does not have the force of international law. But there is a reason why Israel’s Defense Minister Ehud Barak, referring to the U.N. movement to vote for recognition of a Palestinian state with the 1967 borders, said in March, ‘We stand to face a diplomatic tsunami.’ Needless to say, Israel is trying to fend off the vote, and the White House and the U.S. Mission to the U.N. have been supportive. But the plan for the vote is still moving forward.”

    I have been trying to find a date in Sept when this vote is to take place but no luck – maybe the date has still yet to be set for the vote – do you have any info on a date for a vote ??

    I haven’t found any specific date in September. Only ‘in September’.

    Local Prayer Hse leader here says he feels (in the Spirit) Something Big is brewing for Sept, but wasn’t specific. Funny, I kind of feel the same.

    I have to agree with you Kurt – there are many of us that have this feeling of something happening soon – more and more the entire world is uniting against Israel and pushing it into a corner – its in the weather floods, tornadoes, cyclones, huricanes, its in the earths actions volcanos, earth quakes, Tsunami’s, animal life dying off around the world, it very clear with what is taking place in the ME the so call Arab spring, the finacial systems of the world all on the verge of collapse, every where one turns there are warning signs of something coming down the pipe so to speak. If ever there was a time for nations and people to repent it is now.
